Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Finally have a point update. I'm finding that this challenge has made me so eager to get reading done that I am getting super annoyed at work and social obligations! :P

10 Point Task Completed:
Mexican Author/ Set in Mexico: God's Middle Finger Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre by Richard Grant

Points to Date: 165/575
Tasks Completed: 12/40

Potjy | 127 comments 142 new posts!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh! Can't read them all, sorry guys.

Cynthia, can I use a complete set of manga (Japanese comic/graphic novel) for a 15-point task (15.4)? It consists of 24 volumes in all. Normally, I read manga with the same vigor, respect and seriousness as I give a book (and sometimes more :P), but you're the boss here.

The manga in question: Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, Volume 1 The Prophet by Naoki Urasawa. I really don't get why it took such a long time to appear in English.

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I just finished Blind Descent by Nevada Barr 10.4 (She was born March 1). I love that I got to include a Barr book in this challenge. Although sometimes there seem to be some holes, overall, she writes good compelling mysteries. Much of this one happened in Lechuguilla Cavern which is a more protected cavern in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. I'm not a big fan of the underground (to put it mildly), so I identified very well with the main character Anna (who is a park ranger, so all of the books in the series take place in different National Parks--many that I have never heard of.) Overall, a good read.

Steph Completed for 5 points:
4. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Task – Read or listen to a book while you are on a plane, on a train, or in a car (or other mode of transport like a bus/combinations of transportation)

I read Rachel and Her Children Homeless Families in America by Jonathan Kozol, on my bus commute to and from work. This, like all of his work, is a powerful book - and now a classic study.

Good Morning Cyndee - I read Speak over the weekend. Both my oldest (22) and youngest (16) daughters cite it as one of their all-time favorites. It takes place during one year of high school and given that I am so far beyond that angst I can honestly say that I did not think I would get pulled back into it - I was wrong. When I finished the book I was glad I only had to live through High School once !

message 3859: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 155 comments I finished Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal for 5.9, and what a fun book! This was my first time reading Christopher Moore and it won't be my last. The story is of Christ's fictional childhood, as the Bible essentially gives his birth and then picks up again when he's 30. It was off the wall, irreverent, and laugh out loud funny.

I'm not religious, but I would be curious to know if there is anyone who is fairly devout that has read this and how they viewed it.

You're very welcome- most of those books I found and liked were because of someone else telling me about them. I only wish I had some five stars to give you. I think the most any of those got from me was a 4 star but out of them all Speak was my favorite I think. Most were at least 3 and 4 stars for me.
I have a ton more to-read and that I went ahead and bought/mooched but haven't read yet. Definitely post so we know if you liked them!
I honestly didn't think I'd like Speak either. I met the author last summer at a book fair and she was signing books. I like to collect autographed books and I'd heard so much about it I decided to get it. (I think I needed an excuse to buy another two books too- I bought Twisted and had her sign that as well! LOL)
I was very, very surprised when I read it though- I think she does a fantastic job with the main character. I've heard Wintergirls is really good but I haven't read it. I hope you like at least some of them!

Angela | 1934 comments For EL’s TASK - Read a Non-Fiction book about OR by a noted diarist from This List who lived prior to the 1900’s, would A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Based on Her Diary 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich work for this task?

I am not that psyched about this task, so I want to make sure that it is okay.

I want to use the same book for the same challenge and I feel the exact same way about it. I've been putting it off forever. I'm glad you asked to make sure because I was planning on it also. I do think I remember someone else using it without a problem though.
Who knows what I'll do if it doesn't work for this one!

As long as it's a real person and an authentic diary, sure. Or you could find something you're more excited about or skip the task entirely if it doesn't interest you.

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments 40 more points - WOW! Love it when I finish the big points:

15.1 Pisces: Rising Tides Nora Roberts (Pisces - main character is a fisherman) completed 4.9.09
Beautiful, well-told story; this is the 2nd in the Chesapeake Bay trilogy (she later added a 4th book for Seth's story).

25.4 Ros' Task: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (from bigreads list) completed 4.8.09
This was cute but not the WOW I was expecting from reading comments about it - I guess you really need to read the whole series to get that; this was more like episode one but you have to read the others to get the whole story. I'm feeling just like Bridgit right now - I'd read the next one right away if I could find a challenge for it!

my new total as of 4.9.09 comes to: 40+295 = 335

I said in my last response it would work, yes. Martha Ballard was on the Wiki list of diarists, she lived before 1900, it's a book about her and/or diaries so yes, it will work just fine.

None taken, Angela. I actually couldn't care less if someone doesn't like it, though I just wanted to again stress the fact that it's okay to skip tasks. :) But yeah, I'm like you, I'll do them all if I can manage it, but only because I find it fun and not because I feel I have to force anything. If I get to that point I think I probably would stop playing. :)

Angela | 1934 comments That is good to know El, because I did not want to offend you... sadly enough, I probably would complete the task anyway just because I really want to finish them all, especially this time because it seems like it is going to be difficult :)

No problem! I am, however, baffled by the "difficulty" of the task. What Cynthia posted was actually watered down from what I initially asked as she and I had discussed it before, and I'm really glad now that I hadn't suggested some of my other ideas for the task! :) My goal was to make people branch out and find something written before the twentieth century. Personally I find that easier than trying to find who posted before my first post and find two books off their list, etc. - too much clicking! :)

message 3885: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Yes, but it's like a scavenger hunt then, searching for that book you want to read El. I really enjoyed the searching part when I first started the challenge, I spent hours upon hours finding books and it was so much fun!

I agree Kristen. I too enjoyed the searching part of the challenge.

As fun as it was, I find it even more fun going to the library and picking randomly from the shelves there. :) I just mean the going back and searching through old posts was a bit tedious since there are so many. The book search itself is of course fun.

I am listening to Steve Martin's autobiography on Audio CD and the cool part is that he is the narrator! I thought it would be funnier, too, but so far I have found it to be interesting. I am only on disc two.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I really love looking for books, too. I've shifted my list around so many times, and each time, I have to try and re-fit books into the categories... It's fun, although I can't tell you how many times I've looked at other people's book lists to find a book they've give 5 stars to! Hahaha...

Sandy | 105 comments Cynthia,
I wanted to get your ok about a book that I want to read for Sara's task. I wasn't sure if you would be ok with the page numbers that it has. It has 144 pages.
9. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words.
The book is Mr. Lincoln's High-tech War

6. In honor of Earth Day (April 22) read a book with the word Earth, Moon, Sun, World, Star or one of the other planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) in the title.

Can't believe I have finally managed this one - but I've just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

It's been on my bookshelf for over a year, I think. Not brilliant writing, but glad I got through it and can put it aside. Will write a review tomorrow.

Full title: Mr. Lincoln's High-Tech War: How the North Used the Telegraph, Railroads, Surveillance Balloons, Ironclads, High-Powered Weapons, and More to Win the Civil War

Heehee... That's such a ridiculously long title! I'm getting a kick out of the books you all are reading!

I think the number of pages will be fine. I used Winnie-the-Pooh for one of the 25-point tasks, and she didn't say anything... it had about 160 pages, I think.

message 3896: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Apr 09, 2009 03:51PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) A little surgery yesterday and I've lots of time to read.

15.7 The Rest of Her Life and The Southwest Corner

15.6 The Shadow of the Wind

I'm ahead of the game. I thought when I started I might get to 105 points, but I believe that brings me 110 and not quite to the halfway point.

message 3897: by El (new)

El I thought anything over 100 pages is fine - anything less than 100 pages is only okay for the 5 point tasks. I don't recall there being a page limit minimum/maximum for the other tasks.

message 3898: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) That was my understanding as well. The 5-point tasks shouldn't be TOO short though--not like picture books or anything...

message 3899: by Fallon (new)

Fallon | 120 comments What genre would you guys call shadow of the wind? (zafron) because i could use it for 25.5... i tried to change a couple of tasks around but lost points so i would really prefer not to lose any.
