8. Read bk then interview with author: The Nine Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court by Jeffrey Toobin.

Really, really fascinating book. It was also a very engaging and entertaining read, especially for nonfiction. It was just icing on the cake that there was an interview with Toobin about the book on the Colbert Report!

9. Color in the title: White Fang by Jack London.

I'm surprised how much I liked this book. London does a great job of writing from a wolf's (that's part dog) perspective. I want to read this to my children when I have them. I ate fried eggs on white toast for this task.

Somewhere between page 53 and 54 you have given me an additional 30 points-I have 95 and you have me down at 115 (I wish!)

Just wanted to make sure it got corrected and I wasn't given credit for someone else's books.

Thanks!

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Completed two more challenges for 15 POINTS each:

15.2. The Poems of Robert Browning completed 3.22.09
My youthful memory of Robert Browning was as a romance poet, such as "Love Among the Ruins" and "Woman & Roses" - but much else in this volume was either just plain boring or too difficult for me to grasp - took me over two weeks - that's just plain embarrassing

15.9. Red Lily by Nora Roberts (color in title & eat meal w/2 foods of that color) completed 3.22.09
My 'red' meal: meat loaf made with tomato sauce and topped with catsup, with slices of red bell pepper on the plate; salad made with red lettuce, red grapes, & walnuts; red applesauce (homemade applesauce cooked with red hots for color & flavor)

Added to:
5.6 Damsel in Distress by P.G. Wodehouse completed 3.16.09
5.7 Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters completed 3.5.09
5.10 Black Rose by Nora Roberts completed 3.18.09
10.3. The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton (Aussie author) completed 3.21.09
10.4 Suddenly by Candace Camp Camp was born May 23, 1949 completed 3.15.09
15.5 The White Stag by Kate Seredy completed 3.19.09
15.6. Death in Venice by Thomas Mann (translated from original language) completed 3.15.09
15.8. Brisingr Christopher Paolini (read book & listen to interview with author) completed 3.14.09

25.8 Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon 3.9.09
AND Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse completed 3.13.09

new total as of 3.22.09 = 135 points

Liz, If you really got into the series, you could actually count these for several of your books in the challenge--Christian fiction and the 3rd, 4th and 5th in a series. Spring animal (lion for the first one) and fantasy novel. Don't know if you want to read that many or if your list is already full. I've always been one that once I read one in a series, I have to read them all. And these are all good reads!

Sera Becky wrote: "Sera, what did you think? I've been hearing a lot of controversy about vaccine shots lately."

Becky, I loved Dr. Sears' approach to the subject. He provided an objective, balanced perspective so that parents can decide how they should handle vaccinating their children. By the end of the book, I felt most comfortable with having my daughter receive all the vaccines required by the APA, but not according to its schedule. I'll be spreading them out over a longer period of time. I'm not comfortable with having my two month old get 6 shots so she'll get 2 the first time. Then, she'll get the next two 2-4 weeks later, etc.

Vaccines are important, but if you examine their history, there have been issues in the past. For example, all vaccines used to contain mercury, which one company, Merck, had data to support that it was unsafe for children. However, it didn't release this data or otherwise inform the public. It wasn't until many years later that the government on its own, as a public safety initiative, had vaccine manufacturers remove this ingredient from their vaccines. Yet, there are still a couple of flu shots that contain a full dose of mercury so it's good to be informed of this as a parent, because then you can decide whether you would want your child to receive this shot or an alternative one.

Overall, the book is a very interesting read, and again, Dr. Sears has no agenda. He just lays everything out there and let's reader decide what to do. My daughter will get her first two shots tomorrow, and my ped is fine with using an alternate schedule because her primary goal is to have all kids properly vaccinated at some point.

Becky, I'm actaully really glad to hear an argument for The Road, as I found it so miserable, I wanted someone to tell me what they liked about it.
I don't do many end of the world books, but I think I would have like it better if the flashbacks had talked about what the end of the world was actually like. Not my cup of tea, but thanks for the other side!

I was yelling the whole time how stupid they were. There were only two parts that were gross, so if you stopped on the second, you probably got through the worst of it. That said, the story never picked up, just got more repetitive so I don't feel like you missed much. "

Sorry I abandoned you! They had just gone into that house... where they opened the hatch and... *blegh* gross.

But Becky--I'm glad you liked it... End of the world stuff... I can understand its appeal, but I haven't found any I like yet. I have very firm beliefs about the Second Coming and Millennium, so I guess it just seems like... What's the point of subjecting myself to this really bleak, dark, utterly disturbing stuff, that will only serve to freak me out and give me nightmares, when it's never going to happen? *shrugs*

But to each her own! I'm glad that people like the book, because I don't have any ill-will toward the author!

Actually I specifically said Breaking Dawn was not acceptable for the Earth Day task - Sunset is acceptable because it contains Sun whereas that title contains no planet/star related word - you will have to find another place for it.

Bridgit, I'm guessing I'm the Jen whose list you read from? :) Regardless, you've totally made me realize that I need to reread this book! I read it in college and remember being fascinated with it and really liking it at the time, but for some reason I only gave it 3 stars on here. I need to reread it to refresh my memory, I think. :)

And I hope you liked "Something Borrowed" as well...I really enjoy her books.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I'm currently reading The Book Thief (audiobook), and for the past 2-3 days I've been wondering why on EARTH you guys go on and on about how amazing it is, etc. It was just going on and on and, honestly, it was a bit confusing and boring. About halfway through Disc 1, I went to the bookstore and picked up a papercopy to flip through. From the... REALLY choppy way it was being read, I had a feeling it wasn't formatted like a regular book, and sure enough, it wasn't. So just knowing that has helped with listening to it. (When the narrator goes into choppy-mode, I know why now.) But still.... It was SLOW......

BUT I gave The Road two discs before I put it down (permanently), so I figured I ought to give the same courtesy to The Book Thief (especially since it's 5 discs longer than The Road). I'm maybe a third of the way through disc 2, and I think it's starting to pick up, so I'm excited now. I just wanted to say that.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun by Christopher Mahoney

My review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received this book as an Advanced Edition from the author - and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this book. I like science fiction in films sometimes but generally avoid it in books. The story and the characters in this book really grabbed me from the beginning though. It may be written for middle school age kids but as an adult I think it works as an enjoyable read too. For kids I think it would be even better - it has a classic good triumphing over evil element, lots of action, and young characters that kids can identify with. Overall I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I read this for Bonnie's outside the usual genre task and earned finished my first 25 pointer of this challenge.
