Current Total: 15 points
Tasks completed: 1
Task completed: 15 point task #10
March, April, and May are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th months of the year - Read the third, fourth and fifth books of one series.
Club Dead (3), Dead to the World (4), and Dead as a Doornail (5) of the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris.

5 Points
1. Read a Science Fiction OR Fantasy Novel.
Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator by Jennifer Allison
TOTAL=45 points
"
Beth: I loved the first Gilda Joyce - she's a lovable & excentric character. What did you think?

THE TASKS

2. Almost Like Being in Love by Steve Kluger
3. Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of Wars, Disaster, and Survival ..."
How was In The Cut? I don't have that one yet. I want to hear what you think of the Tucker Max book when you're finished. That's a love it or hate it book if there ever was one! LOL

I'm so confused about El's task
2. EL’s TASK - Read a Non-Fiction book about OR by a noted diarist from This List http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dia... who lived prior to the 1900’s.
After reading some of the posts I became confused about what books are allowed and what is not. Here's my question: Louisa May Alcott lived prior to the 1900's so can I read Little women for that task or does it need to be a diary?

4. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Task – Read or listen to a book while you are on a plane, on a train, or in a car (or other mode of transport like a bus/combinations of transportation).
Falling Awake by Jayne Ann Krentz
15 Point Task:
4. Read a novel that takes place in a location you plan to visit during this challenge OR have visited previously during spring break (does not have to be overly specific i.e. if you are visiting Paris this spring (LUCKY YOU) you could read a book that takes place anywhere in France).
The Sweet By and By A Novel by Todd Johnson
TOTAL POINTS: 55

Hi Fallon: The Songlines by Chatwin. Definitely set in Australia - not sure about Sydney, though. Also, you may want to check out John Birmingham's Leviathan. A

The Temptation of the Night Jasmine by Lauren Willig
It's the fifth (I think) in her Pink Carnation series. I highly recommend this series. They're very good.
Also, for that book Wicked Lovely that is free on audiobook right now is REALLY good. I highly recommend that too.

Hey Eva, In the Cut was not as good as I had hoped. I've seen the movie, which was okay, but the book disappointed. There were some admittedly "hot" scenes, but I didn't that there was enough mystery or suspense to classify the book as a thriller.
And, yeah, I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about the Tucker Max book. I've had it on my shelf for while and just never got around to reading it.

My new point total in 180.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Oh, it's called Girl in Blue by Ann Rinaldi- a favorite Historical fiction author from growing up years...
Thanks!

There is also Tracks by Robyn Davidson. I'm not sure that she starts in Sydney. I tried to look, but couldn't figure it out and I don't remember. I know she ends at Alice Springs. It's about her solo trek across Australia. (although I'm sure it's all that solo.) Might be worth a look.

We've spent a lot of time in that area--my in-laws live there. If you haven't been in a while, you would be amazed at how much it has chagned.

The big question now is...where can I count Everything is Illuminated? I went through the entire list & Foer hasn't published his birthday ANYWHERE on the internet, he's not a woman, even though parts of the book are humorous it certainly wasn't a HUMOR book, I think it's really stretching it to say "illuminated" happens when it rains, etc. I may be able to find a word that rhymes with some part of this title but I am so bad at rhyming...can a person be rhyme-challenged in our politically correct society?
Cynthia - this parts for you...would Everything Is Illuminated A Novel count as an epistolary novel since it is written from various characters perspectives as a 3rd person omniscient narrative, in letters, in various books the shetle residents keep, etc?

Sandy - the idea is you read a diary by one of the diarists. If you don't want to read a diary, then you have to choose a non-fiction book about one of the diarists on the list, provided that diarist lived before 1900. Little Women would not work for this task because it is fiction. You would either need to find one of Louisa May Alcott's diaries or find a biography about her.
Fiction does not work for this task in any way.
Simply put, choose an authentic diary or a non-fiction book about a diarist.
I hope that helps clear things up for everyone.

Tis is a good book to. I've liked all of the McCourts books- his and his brothers.

That makes me feel a LOT better about not finishing the book. It was SERIOUSLY freaking me out. I got about 1/3 of the way through before I finally had to put it down. *gick* Did it end well at all?

Where??

Gossamer is an amazing, amazing book, by the way. :-)

Does the Newbery Medal and Honor Award count for this task?
I found a list here:

For ANZAC Day, read a book by an Australian author, set in Australia, or about Australia.
This is a fantastic story, by an Australian author, and part of it is set in Australia. It's about 3 generations of women in one family - begins with 4-year-old Nell abandoned on the wharf in Queensland in 1913, and ends with her granddaughter Cassandra in 2005 finding out why, and all the whats that happened in the intervening years.

Have you read Lolita? If you have, what did you think of it? "
I did read Lolita, and yes, I would say that it is more along the lines that you mentioned- obsession vs reciprocated love... It's told from the perspective of the man, so his interpretation significantly alters the events we see, but it is intriguing to see things from the perspective of the perpetrator. There's nothing graphic, and it's more subtle than outright forced, non-consensual rape, but high in the manipulation factor, so rape all the same...
I did actually like the story, because of the perspective, but I wouldn't call it a favorite by any means.

The Newbery is fine. That's what I'm going to use. Also, remember that you don't have to read the book that won, just a book by the author that won the year you were born.

Stirling, Jessica - Sisters three
Orwell, George - Nineteen eighty-four
Harris, Joanna – Five quarters of the orange

What does EPISTOLARY mean? Wikipedia says "An epistolary novel is a novel written as a series of documents. The usual form is letters, although diary entries, newspaper clippings and other documents are sometimes used. Recently, electronic "documents" such as recordings and radio, blogs and e-mails have also come into use. The word epistolary comes from the Latin word epistola, meaning a letter."
Didn't someone use Frankenstein for this task earlier in this thread?
Also, thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions offered up on the list - I'm processing & moving things around to make this happen.

That puts me at a total of 25 points and 1 task so far.
I am not going to post all of the books I am hoping to read for the challenge but am challenging myself to read books for the challenge that I already own and that are also on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before you Die list. I don't read fast nor do I have a tremendous amount of time (I work full time, travel for work, and am pursuing an MBA in the evenings), so I am keeping my goal fairly low at 100 and aiming at the higher point tasks.

First, congrats on your first points!
Second, I just spent a few minutes going through the list of 1001 books to read before you die. HOLY COW. I haven't even HEARD of half the books. I'm REALLY proud that I've read 18 of them (five of which are Jane Austen)! That's some heavy reading, so good luck!

That's neat. I read some reviews, because this conversation made me more interested, and someone talked about the idea that the main character is written with the intention that you won't love him, and that it doesn't necessarily end well for him. I am also very glad that there is nothing graphic in it. Graphic rape, especially of a 12 year old really isn't something that I would be interested in reading about...! But, I will have to look at it more seriously now, and plan to read it in the near future. I like books that make me think, and stretch my thinking, and expands my 'horizons'. Thanks!
