That's assuming that I become a suder-duper-mega-bestselling author who has a travel budget. :) Right now I'm with a smaller press that requires authors to pay to be published...I think I need to sell one more copy to break even on what I paid. Maybe someday, my friend!

My dad makes old-fashioned dressing with day old cornbread. Sadly, he just got back tonight from the oil rig, so he won't be making it this year. :( It's my favorite.

message 426: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments 12:24 a.m., and I'm about to eat some turkey and wondering how to tackle integrating ideas from critiques into my current short story/novelette--including whether to give up trying to keep it to 7,500 words for the publisher I had in mind and letting it be longer, wondering where I can send it. Does anyone know of a good publisher for historical horror novelettes, novellas, or novels? I mean, one that PAYS? I need to decide fast, unless fate decides for me, because the deadline for the publisher I had in mind is Nov. 30, and I still have a lot of work to do on this project.
Had a wonderful Thanksgiving. 5 guests, and two of us to cook the dinner. We watched a video of the dramatic performance I helped write, and kept pausing it for breaks and conversation. I made pie from fresh pumpkin. It's all gone now! Wishing I'd made two!
As for Keep reading, I managed to read a little more of "The Vampire Kitty Cat Chronicles" this week. Does reading over my own work-in progress and critiques of it count?
I don't think I've checked in since I started working like mad on the story, so I don't think I mentioned it to you guys. Scratch that. I did mention it back when Kyle posted the link of the man cutting his own arm off. It's the one about the vampire using his position as a surgeon's mate in the American Revolution to help lead Benedict Arnold in the direction of treason. I'm enjoying it, but the research and reworking is time consuming.
I also just posted my 8th installment of "Manuel Pascal," a short story, on my profile. If you read it, please let me know. The only person I know is reading it is my cousin. And that I just found out tonight. Final post will be Dec. 17 if all goes as planned. (Like, my remembering to post a chapter every Monday.)
Have a good everything, people!

But I'm really, really tempted to do it... Maybe I could pull it off if I were extra sneaky. I could even "hire" people to plant my business card in other library branches. }:]

Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments Hi, all, it's 1:28, and I'm thinking I'm insane to be up this late, especially on a Saturday night when I have to get up at 6:45 a.m. for church. But such is my habit until I'm exhausted. My Revolutionary War story is close to finished--just needs some more research to settle on the setting for two scenes that I've otherwise finished writing. And if I or anyone else sees how it can be improved by the deadline, I'll do that, too. Behind on homework, but rarely do any kind of work past 10 p.m. This is my time for me to relax. I found out the publisher is in the U.K., but as they have done an anthology on the Wild West, another story about America should pose no problem. But does anyone know whether it can work for me to be paid in pounds? And how they can be exchanged to U.S. dollars?
I feel like working on the story, but until I do more research or someone gives me a critique, I don't know what else I can do.
I feel sleep coming on soon. I hope the tiredness lasts and I drop off properly. It used to take me hours to get to sleep as a child. That was when I started writing novels in my head. Now if I want to write a novel, I do it on the computer (or at least a tablet) so I can remember it. And that is energizing, not conducive to sleep.
This morning in my play writing group I wrote the event in the war story character's childhood in which he got a shocking revelation that started him on a path of evil. That will be read onstage as a monologue next March along with the rest of the writings we choose to use in our production.

J.S., good luck sneaking around in libraries and hiring sneaky people to help you!

Thanks! Haha I've already developed a plan. I will find books that are in a similar genre to my own, and I will place a business card on the final page of each. That way people will be like, "Hey, I'm finished with this book. What should I read next? [Spots business card] Hmm, who is this J. S. Bailey person? I'll have to see what she writes!" If anything, maybe they could ask their library to purchase a copy of The Land Beyond the Portal. I know of at least three library systems that have picked it up already!
