No you would not have to still read if you take a zero in that spot. Remember that you do get one "FREE" roll but nothing could work in order for you to take that roll. So if you still need your ONES and you get 1 at your final roll you would need to use it.

No, it is completely separate. You would only be able to use your free roll if nothing else works (including chance).

Yep, I copied them on to my spreadsheet. THANK YOU for taking the time to do it....

so what do I do with them? (LMAO, I am soo slow, huh?)

See if someone completed their list, I could have a template to go on, but I haven't seen a list where the bottom half has been filled in. So I don't know how to apply the numbers.

message 111: by Angela (last edited Oct 30, 2012 07:29PM) (new)

Angela I feel bad Ezinwanyi, I really do not know how to explain it to you. Can you be more specific about what you do not understand?

You have 5 dice that you roll at one time. You get three rolls total for your first TURN. You can keep whichever dice you want doing your first roll and replace the dice you are dissing for another roll. So if I roll 5 dice and get 1-2-4-1-3, I may want to go for a LARGE STRAIGHT which is a sequence of five dice in a roll because I have a 1-2-3-4 (ensuring me my SMALL STRAIGHT if I have not already used it), so my goal would be to hopefully roll a five. I would take just ONE die and reroll it hoping for a 5. If I get it great, I know have my large straight. If not I still have one more roll with my ONE die. So I roll my final die and I get a 5, which gets me the LARGE STRAIGHT. If i rolled a different number I could still use the SMALL STRAIGHT option, assuming I did not already use it.

If you need further explanation, I can provide more examples.

You mean when you roll the dice? :) It took a while for me too, but I'm pretty sure I get it now and in that case it wasn't too hard!

Let me try and walk you through one of mine! So I start by rolling my five dice and get the following:
2 - 4 - 1 - 1 - 4

Right? I want to go for a full house, so I decide to keep both 1 and both 4 dice. To make it simple, I'll just remove the one I'm rolling again and add the new number at the end of the line. In this case I remove 2 and add in the 3 I then rolled, which makes my dice row look like this:

4 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 3

Then I'll just do the same thing again! Since I wanna keep the same first four dice in order to get my full house, I'll leave them furthest to the left and switch the last one to the new number again. And this time the 3 actually turned into a 1! Which makes the pretty full house row look like this:

4 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 1

Hope that helps!

LOL, I just realized you've talked more about this as I tried to write it down! And I'm not sure if it's actually the rolling or using them later you had trouble with, in which case the lower section is explained here, lol. 0:) But if it was the dice rolls, there's how I did it! Hahah. Sorry for being all confused.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Ok Angela & Bex, this is helping (can you tell I would be NO GOOD in Las Vegas? LOL)!

Okay, please check and see if I am getting the hang of it. Please let me know what to revise.

This is what Angela rolled for me
Turn #1
2-3-6-1-4 (keeping 1,2,3,4)
1-2-3-4-2 (keeping same)
1-2-3-4-2 (Sm. Straight or TWOS)

Turn #2
5-3-5-6-4 (keeping 3,4,5,6)
3-4-5-6-2 (LG Straight)

Turn #3
2-3-1-5-6 (this one is tough because you have your straights covered unless you were to go for your TWOS on the first roll) (keeping the 1)
1-5-2-3-3 (keeping the 3's)
3-3-5-1-2 (this is a crappy roll, so you could use your THREES or your ONES, or CHANCE.)

THIS IS ME APPLYING THOSE NUMBERS (This is where I am a little unsure/confused on, but I think I am right)

3 OF A KIND (Turn #3) Author's First name starting with "J":
1)Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between by J. A. Saare
2) The Many Sins of Lord Cameron by Jennifer Ashley
3)Web of Lies by Jennifer Estep

SM. STRAIGHT(30 points): Turn #1 (Books 1-3 by Charlaine Harris)
Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris Living Dead in Dallas (Sookie Stackhouse, #2) by Charlaine Harris Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #3) by Charlaine Harris

LG. STRAIGHT(40 points):Turn #2 (Books 1-4 by Darynda Jones)
First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2) by Darynda Jones Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3) by Darynda Jones Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones

Am I doing okay?
Also, what about the other categories, am I still responsible to fill them in? Those being--FULL HOUSE; YAHTZEE and CHANCE.

In regards to Turn #3, when it says you can use your THREES it is referring to the upper section not three of a kind(lower section) since you only have two 3's. So if you want to use the Threes you would read one book (that has a three word title or the word three in it's title) for 6 points.

As Danielle said, going for threes in the third roll would be using the upper level, otherwise you're doing great!

For the next turns you just roll five new dice (real or using that awesome online site) and then chose the options on the card where you think they will on either the upper or lower level!

Your UPPER section looks great and your SM. Straight and LG. straight are also good. I am confused about your CHANCE choices though.
Remember that you are only doing THREE TURNS right now and once you finish one TURN you can roll again.
So based on your rolls you cannot do both the SM Straight and TWOS (you have to pick one).

message 124: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 15 comments For those of you having difficulty understanding (I was sooooo confused at the beginning!), my husband explained it to me best by saying this is sort of like playing the card game, poker, only with dice. So you roll the dice and decide which numbers will get you the hand you want. You can see from the lower section especially: 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, full house, etc.... I don't know if that'll help anyone, but it made sense to me after he helped me. Of course, I suppose this will only help if you know how to play poker!

message 125: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Never played poker. Only played Go-fish and Blackjack.
At least I almost good to go, right?

Reasoning on Chance choices:
Per Angela's roll:

I thought since it said "keeping the 3's", that I was supposed to pick 3 books with the word Chance in the title or Chance in the author's name. That's why i chose Karen Chance books 1-3. (I guess that's a not right?)

Maybe I will sit out and watch you all.

message 126: by Mary X (last edited Oct 31, 2012 10:12AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments She meant that you could use the final roll to fill in the categor of 3's or 1's or the Chance category

So with that roll you could either:

Option A: fill in your Ones, taking 1pt and then read a book with a one word title or the word one in the title.

Option B: fill in your fives taking 5 pts and reading a book with 5 words in the title or the word five in the title:

Option C: take your Threes, etc..,

Option D: take your Twos, etc..,,

Option E: use your Chance block and then read 1 book tht either has the word Chance in the title or where the author has a last name that stars with C or H or A or N or C or E. (you could read 1 Karen Chance book for this. You would not need to read three books).

This is all based on what you have left open to fill at this point.

message 127: by Angela (new)

Angela Thank you Mary for explaining this for me. Ezinwanyi, I do not think it is necessary to sit out. As we go along, you will get the hang of it. You can just start out with your SM. or LG straight and figure it out from there. You will be taking more turns, so just use what you have so far.

message 128: by Angela (new)

Angela Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!!! Based on your excitement, it sounds like you are ready to roll (no pun intended)! This will be closed off to new players beginning November 15th, so you still have time to sign up to play this round. Good luck everyone and happy reading ;)!

message 130: by Angela (new)

Angela Sarah wrote: "I'm not sure if this has been asked/answered but if we finish are we allowed to start over and play again?"

Hi Sarah. No, you would have to wait for a new round to start. I am giving everyone a year to finish, but I am not sure if that is too much or not enough time.

message 131: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I think a year is a good lenght to start. I don't think you really have to cut out new players. The "winner" is the one with the most points when it ends right? Not whoever finishes first. So if someone wants to join later and thinks they can finish then why not? But that's up to you.

I am a fast reader and usually finish stuff like this quickly. But knowing that I have a year, I won't be in such a rush and will read non-yahtzee books during this time. Plus I know if I finish too quickly, I will be impatient for everyone else to finish.

message 132: by [deleted user] (new)

If it's as fun as it looks, it would definitely be fun to be able to play again if you happen to finish before everyone else! Lol.

I also agree with Mary about if it should matter if they enter late or not, since it is the final points that are deciding winners. But a year sounds very good to me!

Also: YAY! I can't wait to start. LOL, I'm excited!

Belinda | 801 comments I've updated my post with what I'm reading. I may have been naughty and taken all of them straight of my to-read ASAP pile :P

Quick question about the new to you authors in the full house section: can I read two books by the same new author? Or does it need to be two separate new authors?

S (booksstarsmoon) I have a question that I think have not been asked previously.

For Straights it says "Using your tbr, read 3 books in a row adjusting either the author, title, date added or rating (your choice)"

Do I have to use the "to-read"-shelf or can I use my other tbr-shelfs like "winter-reading" or "wishlist"?

Hi Susanne! Welcome to the game. That is something I did not think about, but I am going to go with your to-read tbr list.

JenniferJ Ezinwanyi once you get the hang of it I am sure you will like it! It's just one of those games you have to dive in and learn as you go. You will most definitely learn quicker playing it than watching though so go ahead hon and give er a try. It will start making more sense as you fill your card up. :)

Jamie | 7 comments I have a question as well, regarding straights. I have a lot of manga/comics in my TBR list. Do I read those since that is the order they come up in (no matter which way I go lol) or do I skip those and go to the next actual novel?

If they are less than 200 pages, I would say you would skip those and go to the next actual novel. I do not know a lot about manga/comics, but I am assuming they are smaller than the page requirements.
