Silver 20.4 - In honor of A Christmas Carol, read a novel that looks forward to the future,
OR a novel that looks backward to the past.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières

Reveiw:

This book was quite unlike anything I have read before. At first when I started I was not quite sure what to make of it, but I have to say as I continued to read I began to get really drawn into the story and it grew on me more and more. By the end I loved it and found the characters to be endearing. There were aspects of the book which reminded me of Catch-22 though it was not quite as absurd.

One of the things which I really enjoyed about this book was the way in which it gave the reader varrious different perspectives, and at times the narrative voice shifted as you were given glimpses of the lives of these varrious different characters which was interesting. Another thing I loved about the book was the humanity of it. This book was not truly about bad guys vs good guys, or who was right and wrong, and regardless of what ones views upon the war and individual governments were, this was a story about how the soldiers themselves were just human regardless of what side they found themselves fighting on. They all had thier own sorrows, and hopes and suffering and it explored the complex range of emotions created by the war.

It was a beautiful and heartbreaking book about the way in which life, love, and hope still go on even in times of greatest hardship and despair.

Witch Hunt

Good story as far as following a family all the way through history. You were able to see the good that began the family and how over time power caused them to fall away from their true spirituality. It takes a woman who finds herself forced into being a witch to take them back. However, the overall story is not very upbeat and ends basically where it begins with paranoia and threats from those who do not understand. I felt like it ended in the middle of the story and maybe it did.

The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers

Review:
This was a great read for New Year! Lord Peter Wimsey's car goes off the road in snow on New Year's Eve, leaving him stranded overnight in a remote Fenland village where he is persuaded to help ring in the New Year on the church bells. Some time later, a body is discovered and Lord Peter is called back to find out what really happened that night.
This is probably the third time I have read this book. It's one of my favourites by this author. Lord Peter, who is really rather silly in the early books, has become much more mature by this point in the series. I love the way Sayers evokes the flat, desolate land of the Fens.

The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht

Review: There are so many themes at work it this book, the most prominent being how people deal with death. The weaving of the real and the mythological makes the story even more enticing to read. It is about a woman coping with the grief of losing her grandfather. She is searching elements of his past and reminiscing on the stories he told her in order to figure out what brought him to the place where he passed away. I was drawn to the authors depiction of how the individual characters rationalized their actions by moving back and forward through the characters histories. The story revolves around a country that is seemingly always at war and the affect that has the people and what those people carry with them as a result.

Let the Great World Spin

This book was one that I happened to find on someone's reading list. I am always searching to find a book that is a little more thought provoking then most.

McCann is an Irish writer and this novel is mainly set in the Bronx but starts and ends in Ireland. The characters and how their lives intertwine or at the very list intercept, made for an interesting read. The trying lives of these characters (judge, hooker, monk) played on my emotions while the antics of the tightrope walker lifted my spirits.

McCann wrote this book in 2009 and very delicately, tied the World Trade Center buildings into the story line. He writes about a ficticious tightrope walker (based on Philippe Petit actual walk, 1974) to remind readers that there was something good or interesting to remember about those buildings before current tragedies happened. While this character performs his death defying stunts in the air, life still happens below, while the great world spins.

Loved this book.

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

I wouldn’t recommend this book to those who have to like the characters in a story, but if you can deal with that and enjoy reading about people who are truly different from the “norm” it is well written and engaging. The story revolves around the Binewski family and the Freak Show they run and inhabit. In fact, the parents created this family on purpose so that they could have this show. There is an aqua man, co-joined twins and our narrator, the hunchbacked albino, who serves the family, especially her brother Arturo(the aqua man). Some understandably unusual family dynamics emerge as Arturo’s power over the show and his family grows. I was completely drawn into the story of this family, but not as convinced by the present day story which I can’t go into without spoilers. Geek Love has been on my TBR list for a long time, and I’m so glad I read it, even though it isn’t for everyone!

20.9 – Krista’s Task – Take the High Road

Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly 720 Lexile

I loved the premise of this story. The angels’ world could no longer support them, so they have come to earth to steal the life force of the humans and take over (most of the humans have not figured this out, however and worship the angels). They are beautiful, but most are definitely different from the protecting angel that is usually portrayed. The writing was strong, especially during the sections that described the angels and the action surrounding the hero, Alex, and heroine, Willow. I thought the writing weakened when the author wrote the romance scenes. The vocabulary and even the sentence structure seemed to become more simplistic, repetitive and a bit “drawn out”. It was still good, but just felt a little stilted to me. I also enjoyed the “road trip” element of the book as Alex and Willow tried to escape danger and stop the angel takeover. I’d recommend Angel Burn to anyone who likes paranormal books. It’s the first of a planned trilogy, but still has a sense of completion, too, which I liked. I’m looking forward to Angel Fire, out later this month!

This was a great little love story about a girl from Iran and a boy from America. Of course, it all starts with a greencard! This is part of a series (again, picked it up on a clearance rack and did not know that)….and I will be looking up the rest of the series soon! There are so many wonderful things about this book besides the main storyline…how this Iranian girl views America, its freedoms, and her desire to be a part of it all is so beautifully written! There are several twists and turns (and definitely meddling from family and exes) that make the story even more interesting! There are wonderful things added about the cultures as well. I highly recommend it!

The Train of Small Mercies (2011) by David Rowell (Hardcover, 260 pages)
Review: The concept was good: tell stories of people waiting to see the funeral train of Robert F. Kennedy go by in 1968. The execution just didn't work. The author took 6 sets of people (who do not ever get to know each other) and writes about a slice of life for each set, a slice which includes brief intersections with the funeral train. The people in the slices didn't seem like real people -- just names with situations. The events didn't seem rooted in the 1960s -- it could have been 1978 or 1988 as easily as it was 1968. And, unexpectedly, two sets of situations involved (view spoiler), which if I had realized before reading the book I wouldn't have read the book. Not recommended.

This book reminded me so much of the YA series about the blue envelopes. This is the story of a mother who has died and left instructions for her husband and daughter. Their instructions are to take the same journey that she and her husband took years ago when they met, fell in love, and became a couple. They travel from country to country sharing memories of the couple and making new ones together. She has written them letters with poems, special instructions, memories, etc. to read in each country. It is a touching story about dealing with the grief of loss and the discovery of the joy of living with the memories.

I really enjoyed the first book in this trilogy and had high hopes for this second book, The Fall and knowing of course that there is a third. This novel starts off pretty much where the first story ends and along the way some new characters join us. Alas midway through, not that this had nothing to do with my review, but I, for the first time ever, dropped this book into the tub. Not just lightly but totally submerged. Yes, Merry Christmas to me. So needless to say, I had to take a break from said book and make way for something else but I finally got back to it before the end of the year. The story was well written and ended off with questions that were answered and more questions asked. Looking forward to the third to tie up this riveting series!

Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal by Julie Metz

Perfection A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal by Julie Metz

"Perfection" is precisely what she thinks she has in the beginning: a handsome husband, darling daughter, gorgeous home complete with garden, rewarding work, a large circle of friends. Everything comes crashing down one afternoon in January when her husband suddenly dies. Julie takes us by the hand and guides us through the quickly descending circles of hell that she experiences following his death and the discovery of his secret life. This is a story of betrayal and heartbreak and, finally, of healing. There were times when I wasn't in love with the narrative voice, but the story was so compelling it was easy to overlook.

Firebird (Alex Benedict #6) (2011) by Jack McDevitt (Hardcover, 384 pages)

This book is set in 11,321 C.E. (used to be A.D.), over 9,000 years in the future. Each chapter starts with a quotation from a fictional book.
Kosha Malkeva, The Road to Babylon, 3376 C. E. (Common Era – used to be A. D.)
Robin, Christopher - Multiverse
Grammery, Ferris - Famous Ghosts of Dellaconda
Taylor, Henry - The Statesman, 6712 C . E.
A book written about Alex Benedict “by an author I won’t bother to name” Destiny’s Thief
Etc;

Not sure what the policy on 20.2 is – the characters travel to different planets at different times throughout the novel. Each planet has their own government; and, most of the governments belong to an overarching government (similar to Belgium and France belonging to the European Union).

Review:This is the 6th novel in the author’s “Alex Benedict” series. Alex Benedict is an antiquities dealer, specializing in items related to famous people and big events. He does his own research whenever he is offered items that purport to be connected to such events --- (motive: his reputation would suffer if he offered his customers fakes) --- and when he does the research, he usually solves the mysteries associated with such events. The first person narrator is his assistant, a young-ish lady who doubles as his starship captain when travelling to other planets. This series is a perfect blend of science fiction (New Planets! Alien species! Technological advances! Near-sentient computers!) and the garden-variety detective story (Red Herrings! Witnesses with something to hide! Unexplained disappearances!). 5*s

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not."

This story follows the battle between two magicians. The arena for their showdown: a circus. As night falls, the doors to the circus open. You feel as if you are walking through a black and white picture, even the grass has been painted. As you make your way through the labyrinth of striped tents, your senses and sense of reality are challenged and delighted, displays of color and illusion and memory and wish. As the sun peeps over the horizon, the circus closes its doors until night falls once more.

While the attractions at the circus are absolute confections and brilliantly constructed, it's the characters Morgenstern imagined that I most loved. From the dueling magicians who are only pawns themselves to the twins born the night the circus first opened its doors, I fell madly for each of the characters.

Morgenstern has created a world I would love to join, to see with my own eyes the amazing spectacles she has described and to become friends with the dizzying array of humanity she has assembled in this gem of a debut.

Review: The Night Circus is like no other book I've ever read. The style the narrative takes is like clockwork, moving forward and backward in time in a way that at first disconcerts the reader but ultimately makes sense in an alarmingly beautiful way. The pacing is perfect and grips the reader. However, I wouldn't call it a page-turner in the traditional sense, as I felt compelled to savor the beautiful, pristine imagery Morgernstern crafts in this innovative, fantastic novel that is about life and dreams, love and fortune. I plan to re-read this brilliantly-crafted novel as soon as possible, and I would recommend it to any who enjoys well-written prose, along with a compelling narrative.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was a quick and easy read. The book was written in first person narration with dictionary entries to describe the entire relationship. Several of the entries were confusing to me and I wasn't even sure how they flowed with the others. Also, several of the entries seemed incomplete but then another entry later on would explain further. I read the book in a couple of hours on Kindle, but I'm not sure I would have invested money in the hardback version.

I am not sure where to start with this review/opinion. Jeffrey Eugenides has a unique voice which is strong but wavers every once and awhile. I am huge fan of Sofia Coppola's version of this story, which was brought to life in her 1999 film. I have seen the movie more times than I can count so I think by reading the novel more than 10 years after the movie release and from knowing the movie so well I am a bit tainted.

The novel is dark and brooding through out with little glimmers of light, which connects the reader back to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story and I have recommended the novel to many friends who have not seen the movie and I look forward to hearing their opinions.

The book you linked does not have page numbers listed, and the other edition has 424 pages...?

I need to do some research to see why there is such a big discrepancy between your edition & the other editions with listed page numbers (Amazon has it at 424 pages & I can't find it in my library system).

Liz, I did research on this for itpdx. This is the correct book, from the Civ thread (see msg 23).

Ooops. Thanks! This is what happens when one gets so behind in the score-keeping (silly holiday vacation without computer!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments I just didn't want to spend any more time with this. So sorry you didn't have a computer, I know that means you got to do a lot more reading. ;-)

Unfortunately this book does not qualify as an autobiography. It has a Dewey decimal number in the 362 in the Social Sciences and Amazon classifies it as self-help.

It fits 20.7 - US Author, 20.10 - Play the Numbers, and 10.5 - Underrated. Let me know which task you'd like to use.

Weirdly, A Christmas Carol should not qualify for task 20.4 (three of five sections are set in the present and the future section doesn't seem to be more than 25 years in the future), but we're going to make an exception & allow it to qualify for the task it inspired.

With post 264, your total should have been 210 points. With the 20 points claimed in post 298, your Grand Total is 230 points (as of post 300).
