Sandra | 25910 comments Yes, that's the one, the cover I've got is different The Time Of My Life by Patrick Swayze but it'll be the same. Glad you liked it. I'll be starting it as soon as I do a review for Blood of the Demon.

Sandra | 25910 comments Blood of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #2) by Diana Rowland
Demons Shelf
25/10/12
★★★★

Kara Gillian is a homicide cop in Beaulac Louisiana, who also summons demons from an alternate plane. She has worked hard at learning how to control the arcane.

Her plate is full when 2 murders happen where the souls of the deceased have been ripped out and consumed, not that anyone else can see that.

Kara needs help, but her Aunt is unconscious and in care (her soul was stolen in the first book and Kara is attempting to solve that as well). The Demon Lord Rhyzkahl wants her to be his personal summoner; FBI Agents Ryan Kristoff & Zack Garnett also pop up to assist. And Kara can't get into her aunt's library cause the wards are set to kill.

The murders can be traced back to wealth and politics but that still doesn't help Kara determine who is eating souls, and how they can be stopped.

This series is very well done, you can almost feel the heat and humidity of the swamp, almost feel the bite of the demons and the questions that are left unanswered are only growing.

Looking forward to reading the next one very soon.

Elishia I'll post if I see it first.
Finally finished, this ones going to be short because i'm not sure what I thought of it.

Shelf 6 'Demons' 20/10/2012

Book: Retribution
Rating: ★★/★ hmm might change
Finished: 27/10/12
Review: Ok this was my least favourite of the series not sure if its because I hadn't read them for a while, because I was struggling with books or just the fact that it was different. I only remember Sundown appearing in one previous book so I already wasn't that excited to read his story as I love the original lot. I may have to do a re read of this at a more leisurely pace and maybe read the one before as well to get me back in to the world.

Only because I wasn't sure I could find it. But I did. I am going to duct tape it to my wrist so I can actually read the whole thing, since I have totally forgotten the part I already read a month ago...when I first lost it!

Comments:
I liked the idea of this book. Magic was newly discovered about 30 years previous. And as people learn to harness it, they find that every use of it takes a toll on the person using it. Unless they offload the cost of using magic on an innocent person. Allie is the heroine of this book, and she uses magic to track people who do offload the cost illegally. But it does take a toll on her as well, including memory loss. I guess I should have seen the ending coming with the knowledge of what the book is about, but I didn't. I don't mind a book that sets up a series, but I felt so bad for Allie that I just was uncomfortable with the end. I don't think it'll read any more of this one.

How to Drive a Dragon Crazy (The Dragon Kin, #6) by G.A. Aiken
Favorite Series 29/10/12 ★★★★★

I'd been putting off reading this one just cause then I'd be caught up on the series. How was Ms Aiken going to reconcile Izzy & Éibhear after their youthful follies?

I shouldn't have been worried, at all. And whilst watching them get their act together we had plenty of action, battles, Gods, cults, bad family members and laughter.

All this action takes place 10 years after the last book and Éibhear the Blue is now Éibhear the Contemptible and Izzy the Dangerous is General Iseabail of Annwyl the Bloody's Eighth, Fourteenth and Twenty-sixth Legions. Both have grown up and are fierce warriors for their Queens, and get sent on missions by both Queens and Gods.

And now hanging for the next instalment.

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep
Shelf: favorite series
Book: Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep
date read: 10/29/2012
rating: 3 stars (more like 3,5 stars)

After her mothers tragic death Gwen is sent to a special boarding school for mythical warriors – The Mythos Academy. Except that Gwen is not a warrior, she is a Gypsy, having a gift of seeing things when she touches something or someone. She has no clue why she has to be there and it is not easy for her being a total outcast. Of course there are the beautiful and mean girls and totally hot bad guy as every YA boarding school story should have.

I liked the connections with the different mythologies in the book but so many repetitions about parts of the story and characters and the cliches sometimes really didn't let me enjoy otherwise good story. Maybe it was something to do with being a YA book, but those things really distracted me.
But the writer turned it around at the end of the book and the story got an exciting ending to be continued.

message 433: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25910 comments Unfortunately, unnecessary repetition is Jennifer Estep's writing style. I myself rarely notice it, just the way I read I guess, but many, many peeps have mentioned it in the past, particularly in the Elemental Assassin series. But she does a good story and that's what counts for me :)

Book: Rapture in Death (In Death, #4) by J.D. Robb
Rating: ★★★★
Finished: 28/10/12
Review: I had a headache so listened to this one instead. I really love this series and it seems to get better with each book as you get to learn more about Rourke and Eve as well as the supporting characters. This one wasn't my favourite of the series maybe because I worked out who the murderer was early on, but had me hooked enough to listen to it all in almost 1 day.
This one was about an everyday piece of equipment for them (as its set in 2058) but someone got bored and decided to plant subliminal suggestions in them which caused people to kill themselves.

Wow that good?. I haven't read your review as i've been thinking if to read this series or not and don't know if there are any spoilers. Your rating is definitely making me think I should start these though.

message 436: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25910 comments Elishia, I was deliberately spoiler free. I love the series, but it's not for everyone. The first one sets the tone so if you don't like it then no worries. G.A. Aiken also writes as Shelly Laurenston - Pride series & Pack Series, which are a bit less gory.

book Silver of shadow A Sliver of Shadow (Abby Sinclair, #2) by Allison Pang

This was fun. I enjoyed it a lot, and am glad I found it and got to finish it. This second book in the series is pretty full of action from the beginning. Abby is still pretty sad about being dumped by Brystion (and I still don't really understand why he did that since it is obvious they both still are in love/lust).

Abbie's job as a Keystone/Touchstone allows here to help fae, demons, etc, pass through the CrossRoads from one place to another. She is bound to the Boss (Protectorate) of the Earth place. The book starts out with someone showing up claiming to have the job, as Moira (the boss) won't be coming back from Faery.

Needless to say, new person isn't what she seems, nothing is what it seems and I don't want to blab too much. These worlds are richly textured and very alive with all kinds of types. It amuses me that Abby quotes internet memes, as do her mortal friends ("The cake is a lie" is one).

Abby also learns she has siblings, and a father, but I will say no more. This book suddenly took a leap at the end, but although it was a cliffhanger, the book was complete without it. In fact, one really didn't have to read book 1 to enjoy this book.

I like this series.
