Green-Eyed Demon

Rate this book
Things to do:

1. Rescue sister.
2. Murder grandmother.
3. Don't upset the voodoo priestess.

The clock is ticking for Sabina Kane. Her sister has been kidnapped by her grandmother, the Dark Races are on the brink of war, and a mysterious order is manipulating everyone behind the scenes.

Working on information provided by an unlikely ally, Sabina and her trusty sidekicks -- a sexy mage named Adam Lazarus and Giguhl, a Mischief demon -- head to New Orleans to begin the hunt for her sister. Once there, they must contend with belligerent werewolves, magic-wielding vampires and -- perhaps most frightening of all -- humans.

But as much as Sabina is focused on surviving the present, the past won't be ignored. Before she can save those she cares about most, she must save herself from the ghosts of her past.

A buddy read with my MacHalo Freaks family!!!

This was the third installment in the Sabina Series and our half Vamp half Mage chick is on the hunt for her grandmother Queen bitch, who has captured and tortured her twin sister M. Things seem quite hopeless and Sabina, along with her potential love interest Adam the mage, her minion the Demon Cat Gighul, a gender bending Fae, a human Voodoo priestess and an old lady mage, all have to find a way to free Mazy, kill the old Queen bitch, and prevent the beginning of a war between the Fae and the rest of the Dark magical creatures.... A tall order for a potentially powerful mage who has no idea how to work her magic....

This time around the action moved to New Orleans and as always, the city comes with its own unique personality. It is a good backdrop for the multi race and multi species encompassing plot. We even get several religious and mythological legends snuck in between the drag shows, midget porn, and zombie animation.... Yea, it all happens in the span of just this book!

So, the question is why, after all these gems contained in this issue, I am only rating it a tad over 3 Stars??? Because as much as the story kept me interested, it also lacks in something and I just can't put my finger on it. Some of it has to do with the predictability of the story, but this usually does not bother me - after all, I always say that every new work of art is just a variation on a recurring theme. Some of it is that as much as Sabina gets to do, as a character she is a bit shallow and not much growth has been happening... But most of all, it is that undefined "something" which makes the read magical and I just did not get it from this book.... The heart and soul of the series is still the gossiping, smart ass Demon Cat and I hope he can continue bringing the laughter with him, because he definitely brightens up the place. The romance is OK, but I am not as invested in it as I could be yet... I did enjoy the lesbian couple - there was electricity every time they were around:-) And the zombie accident was very fun - definitely some sparks of brilliance here and there...

Overall, this is a solid middle book in a series and I am not giving up on it. I still hope that greatness is possible!

Now I wish you all Happy Reading and may you always find joy in a book!!!

4.5 This is what happened to me during this book

I can't believe how much the main character changed in this book! The first ones didn't deserve 5 stars because she didn't really seem like the smart hero type. Guess what?! She is now!

As the previous books, this was really fast paced and damn hard to put down. And I really liked the new characters, even the bad ones were so good at being bad that they were good (if that makes any sense...). And I'm so glad I got to see more of Adam in this book. He's not as meh as I thought he was.

And the best part? The series isn't over. Can't wait to see what happens the next one!

After reading the first two books in fairly quick succession and really enjoying them both, I was so pleased to receive a review copy of the third and latest instalment in the brilliant 'Sabina Kane' series by Jaye Wells.

As with all the 'Sabina Kane' books this one begins with a fast-paced action scene, which pulled me in to the story from the first page. Sabina and her team, consisting of Giguhl and Adam, are on route to find Maisie, Sabina's twin sister.

Adam is still the scorchingly sexy mage, Giguhl is still his snarky lovable self and Sabina continues to be the fantastic kick-arse chick I met in Red-Headed Stepchild. She's also feeling more for Adam, well, who can blame her, but unfortunately, she's still not sure if she should let herself fall for him - she doesn't do love, does she? But while Sabina is questioning every emotion and action, Adam is taking metaphorical cold-showers as sexual frustration oozes from every pore.

The relationship between Sabina and Adam moves along at a snails pace - it's still complicated and Sabina is still holding back. Some of her decisions later in the book are questionable and she had me frowning at her in disapproval, but at the same time I understand where she was coming from.

I loved this book, it's fast-paced, edgy. There's plenty of action, and the banter between Sabina and demon-cat Giguhl, which I loved in the first book but found lacking in the second, is back!

"Is this gonna take long?" Giguhl said.
I frowned at the demon. "Why - you got somewhere else to be?"
He shot me a bitch-please look. "No but I'd like the record to state that getting shot in the ass still isn't fun." He shifted around to show me his left ass cheek where his black sweat pants now featured a perfectly round bullet hole. I couldn't see any blood in the dim light, but I could smell it.
"Sheesh, G, again?" Adam said.
"Yes, Mr. Perfect, again. Lucky for you bitches I'm a fast healer."

For those of you who've read the previous books will know what this refers to but hopefully the rest of you will just capture the fabulous snarkiness - I really enjoy this kind of dialogue between characters, when done well, and Ms Wells writes in brilliantly. It also lightens the tone but not too much as this is still a nicely dark urban fantasy.

There's lots of fab action throughout the book and there's a bit of a showdown between Sabina and her evil vampire Grandmother. However, finding Maisie is not that easy, of course. There's lots of ups and downs on the way. Sabina, Adam and Giguhl are now a pretty good team, although sometimes Sabina forgets that and occasionally slips back into loner-assassin mode, as she's not used to having friends and 'teammates', it does freak her out a little bit but deep down I think she's actually liking it. Sabina is growing as a character very well.

Maisie also has a bit of a tough ride in the instalment, but as I found her a little sickly sweet in The Mage in Black, it was satisfying to see her act a bit more like Sabina, even if it was forced upon her by the torture inflicted by her Grandmother.

There are a few new additions to this instalment: a feisty werewolf, a drag queen called Cleopatra Pussy Willow, a voodoo priestess, who's human no less and gorgeous, which causes a touch of jealousy from one killer-assassin...tee hee.

VERDICT:

This series is truly fab. I really didn't want to get to the end of this book as I now have to wait ages for 'Silver-Tongued Devil' the next instalment...I can't wait! I love this author and this series - a great urban fantasy I would definitely recommend!

I’m not sure why I wanted to read an early copy of this book. After book 2, I did not know if I wanted to continue with the series at all. Frankly, I was bored with the series, and I really did not like Sabina. I know, this is not how you start a review in which you rated the book 4 stars but please stick with me. I’ll make sense eventually… or not.

Anyways, book 3 in the Sabina Kane saga started really darn good. I was squealing with joy (no, not literally) but I was happy. I so did not regret my decision to read this book. There was tons of action with Sabina trying to recover what was taken from her at the end of book 2 (trying to avoid a spoiler here just in case). Then, a few chapters later, it was yawnville for me. How do I explain this? I’m going to try to give you example:

Note- this is NOT from the book.

I walked upstairs.
I sneezed.
I put a sock on.
I looked into the mirror.
I sat down.
I wondered what Herman was doing
Blah, blah, blah.

The author’s writing is like the examples I gave above. The writing is so mechanical at times. Now, I am NO writer but I have a rule, if it looks like I could write the book, something is wrong. At times, the writing in this book felt wrong.

So, what the hell right? I’m still giving the book 4 stars and all I’ve done is complain? Yeah, I know, I do ramble. So here is the good stuff:

I loved Sabina in this book for the exact reason I hated her in book 2. Seriously, the best part of this book has nothing to do with the story (I’ll get to that shortly). This book is about Sabina struggling with her inner self and who she is. I’m not talking about the fact that she is half Mage and half vampire but instead, the part that makes her 1 part lethal assassin and one part vulnerable, fragile woman. This is what I loved. No, the book is not sappy at all. In fact, you still have all of Sabina’s wit, and her kick ass heroism. However, you also have her insecurities, and her sense of hopelessness.

By far, the best part of the book is Sabina’s and Adam’s relationship. Not only is it conflicted but also it is darn right fun. You add in jealousy on Sabina’s part, frustration on Adam’s part, a demon with an opinion, a drag queen, a pissed off werewolf and you have a lot of fun antics.

I learned to like Sabina in this book. I realized I did not want to change her but instead, I was hoping she learned to open up to the people (ok not people but Mage’s, werewolves, demons, etc.) around her. She could still be a kick ass tough bitch but in this book, she learned what really mattered. Wow, I sound like a romantic. How sickening!

this book was AWESOME with a capital A

this book is the 3rd installment of the Sabina Kane series, and after reading the first 2, this is what it was all building up for, and let me tell you, you would not be disappointed at all,
I just love the magepire Sabina and her mancy Adam, and them FINALLY getting it on, (bout time),
the other characters just bring it all together and wouldn't be great without them, especially Gigi the demon, I soooooo love him, no matter what happens you can guarantee that Gighul will diffuse the whole situation, and get a joke line in there somewhere, it just wouldn't be same without him,
well off to read the next installment, don't let me down Magepire xx

The stakes have never been higher for Sabina, not only is her grandmother trying to start a war amongst all the Dark Races that could destroy half the world's population but she has also taken Sabina's twin sister as a hostage. Having seen first hand exactly what Lavinia is capable of Sabina knows that she has a limited time to save Maisie's life, she may have only just met her twin but Sabina wants the chance to get to know her properly and she will do whatever it takes to rescue her.

While I enjoyed the first two books in this series I feel like Green-Eyed Demon really sees things step up a gear. We get more action, more romance, the introduction of some fab new characters and a fun new setting as Sabina and friends visit New Orleans in search of Maisie. Sabina takes a long hard look at herself in this book and it made her character so much easier to relate to, she has always been a loner (with good reason!) but she is starting to realise that she isn't quite as heartless as she has always pretended to be and that as a team her, Adam and Gighul are pretty much unstoppable. She makes a slip up towards the end but I'm going to blame that on temporary insanity and hope that she's finally learnt her lesson once and for all.

I love the development in Sabina and Adam's relationship, I like that he's supportive of her and understands where she is coming from but that he doesn't let her walk all over him. He tells her in no uncertain terms that he cares and wants to be with her but that he's not going to put up with her dithering indefinitely so she'd better pull her finger out. Gighul is one of the stars of the show as always, his snark always puts a smile on his face, but he has some competition in this book in the form of a fae transvestite, a voodoo priestess and a very angry werewolf. I hope we're going to see more of all the new characters introduced here because they all had something to add to the story.

This series has definitely captured my interest and I'm looking forward to reading the last few stories to find out how everything turns out for Sabina.

MINOR SPOILER

My list of favourite UFs consists of only three series. And Jaye Wells’ Sabina Kane series is one of them!!!

Sabina’s narration is one of the few out there in the genre that I don’t find tedious or boring. I loved Sabina in the previous books, but I think her character has grown immensely from the first two books. Sure, she’s still got her quick-fire temper and bitchy moments, but she wouldn’t be Sabina if she lost that fire in her.

When we first met Sabina in book one, she was a cold-hearted bitch. She was devoid of any emotions, which made her the perfect assassin. But by the end of this book, Sabina opens herself up in a way that reveals old wounds and brings hope to a lighter future. So much so that she finally lets Adam, the hot mage into her heart. Finally! I’ve been waiting for this moment since RHSC and I am thrilled to say that there were at least three moments when tears threatened to spill. Wells just knows how to play on my emotions. The fact that Sabina refers to Adam as “the man she loves” shows how much she’s overcome to care for him so much.

Another thing I loved about this book was the change in setting. New Orleans brought so much life and magic to the series. Wells did a great job of taking the surroundings and incorporating it into the storyline. In addition, she added new eccentric characters that really embodied the Big Easy way. Of course, I’m talking about PUSSY WILLOW! I loved her and when she was beaten, rage boiled through my veins. I was so pissed! Needless to say, I loved the secondary characters in this series!

And then there’s Team Awesome aka Sabina, Adam, and Gighul. What a team! I adore this trio! With friendship and teamwork, these guys seriously kick some major ass. I can’t wait to read more of their little adventures!

But there was one thing I felt that was missing from this book, and of course, it was Maisie’s absence. I didn’t expect to love Maze as much as I thought I would in THIB, but I really missed her sweetness in this one.

Green-Eyed Demon was a great book in the Sabina Kane series! With great action, humour and romance, I don’t think I can love this series more than I already do!

Favourite Quote:
"You ever let a demon through your portal before?" he purred to Calyx. The tip of one claw swirled lazy circles in the mossy pond water.
"Um, I don't think so," she said hesitantly.
He winked at the faery. "Trust me, sweet cheeks, you'd remember having a demon in your portal."

4.5 stars!

Now, see, this is what an urban fantasy book is supposed to look like. It has absolutely everything: vampires, mages, weres, mischief demons, fae transvestites, voodoo priestesses, kidnapped twin sisters, evil murderous grandmothers, epic battles and great love stories. Jaye Wells has come a long way since writing Red Headed Stepchild . Truth to be told, she’s spending an awful lot of time with Nicole Peeler lately. Maybe Peeler’s general awesomeness rubbed off on her somehow.

While Sabina Kane certainly isn’t Jane True, the person she’s become cannot leave anyone coldhearted. I think Wells finally realized that the MC had to actually feel something in order for someone to connect with her. Green Eyed Demon is all about revelations and personal growth. It kept me interested from the first to the last page. You all know how I feel about writing summaries, so I’ll just skip that part. This series is really worth reading, even if it means suffering through the first installment.

Brava, Ms. Wells. You did very well!

Previously Published on my blog: Welcome to Larissa's Bookish Life

*Contains Spoilers if you haven’t read the first two books in the series.

I read the first book in Jaye Wells’ Sabina Kane series, Red-headed Stepchild, before I started reviewing books in 2009. By the time the second book in the series, The Mage in Black, came out I ended up postponing reading it. Last week, I got Green-Eyed Demon from NetGalley and I finally buckled down and read Mage in Black. I could hit myself for taking so long to catch up on this series. I had forgotten how awesome these books are!

Gree-Eyed Demon starts off not very long after the events of Mage in Black. Sabina, Adam and Giguhl are trying to find out where Sabina’s sister, Maisie, is after she was kidnapped at the end of Mage in Black.

From page one, Sabina Kane’s newest adventure is a wild ride and I didn’t want to get off for one second! Between trying to find her sister, dealing with her feelings for Adam, planning to kill her grandmother, being attacked by magic weaving vamps and feeling her world spin on its axis, Sabina has her work cut out for her and all I had to do was sit back and enjoy the ride.

One of my favorite thing about this series is that the hero is actually a nice guy. It sounds crazy when I put it like that, but in a genre where most heroes are of the anti, problematic and the not-so-clearly-a-hero kind, I find that a breath of fresh air!

As for the heroine, Jaye Wells has done a spectacular job in creating Sabina. She is the ultimate damage heroine that I love to get to know and see grow with each book and each adventure. Sabina’s growth from the selfish, temperamental lone-wolf to someone who has learned to admit that she can care for the people in her life was amazing. However, that change will definitely not be the easiest one and I can’t wait to read all about it.

All in all, Green-Eyed Demon was the perfect addition to this awesome Urban Fantasy series that I sincerely hope will be around for a long time!

I’m a little addicted to this series. I can’t say why, other than they are fun to read and a great escape. Green-Eyed Demon is the third book in the Sabina Kane series. In this installment, Sabina, Adam, and Gighul must rescue Sabina’s twin sister Maisie from her criminally insane grandmother Lavinia. And, oh yes, Sabina must save the world from Lavinia’s sinister plans to rid the world of mages, among other things.

This book is set mostly in New Orleans, which provides the perfect atmosphere for this book. New Orleans is an easy place to believe in magic, voodoo, and all things paranormal. Sabina and Adam enlist the aid of Zenobia a voodoo and magic store owner, to help find Maisie.

The characters really make the series. Gighul the demon is up to his usual mischief. Zenobia’s assistant Brooks has a flamboyant alter-ego as Pussy Willow, a transvestite entertainer. Throw in the mage shock rock group Necrospank’s lead singer Erron Zorn and you have a most colorful cast of characters. The dialogue alone had me in stitches.

On the relationship side, Sabina has difficulty with commitment. She makes a few bad decisions and I felt frustrated with Sabina as she avoided Adam. However, Sabina does mature in this book. She still can act as a loose cannon, but she learns to depend on the others around her.

I especially enjoyed the battle scenes. I loved how Sabina developed more control over her powers. These scenes had me on the edge of my seat. Well done!

Green-Eyed Demon picks up right after the events of Violet Tendencies. Truth be told you don't need to have read the story but it was pretty damn fun so you probably should. So our rescue quartet is down to a trio again and I'm quite happy with that development. Valva was a bit too much if you ask me. Mostly because Giguhl acted like a love sick puppy around her and that was gag inducing. Where is your pride, demon?! So we're still looking for Maisie. And Sabina's brilliant plan is to kidnap one of the Dominae to exchange for her sister. The plan goes somewhat successfully and they manage to nab Tanith and deliver her to the Hekate Council. Which is hiding with the Queen of the Fae which is a major bitch. Tanith gives them a clue to Maisie's location in exchange for getting her on the vampire throne eventually. So as with the previous instalments we're off to a new city.

New Orleans is a great place to set an urban fantasy novel and because it is New Orleans one of the new layers is a voodoo priestess. The catch is Zen is not a member of the dark races - she's a human. Or as she prefers "mortally challenged". And her assistant is one of the more colourful characters in the books - a feary drag queen. How cool is that?! At first I found Zen annoying but she was a positive influence on Sabina. The merry band was joined (a bit reluctantly) by a couple of recreant mages musicians with some strange fetishes. The lead one Erron Zorn proved to be a real treasure trove when it comes to information about the Caste of Nod and it's mysterious leader so I'm hoping that he'll be around for the next couple of books.

We had the usual drama that included some awesome fight scenes, Sabina accidentally raising a zombie, one dead creepy owl and before the final confrontation with Granny Dearest and the ultimate victory. As the prophecies predicted Sabina united the dark races and thus avoided the war. So far. Because Master Mahan aka Cain is still alive and still wants Sabina chained and obedient, a servant to be used in his own plans. Also after that little stunt Queen Maeve pulled I'm not so sure that the peace is going to last. More likely it will fall apart a couple of minutes after Sabina opens her big mouth :)

Talking about Sabina I have to point out that she went through quite the transformation in this book. Character growth doesn't even cover it. More like someone kidnapped her and installed her with an emotions chip. While I like the new and improved Sabina it left a bit artificial. Still I'm happy she's finally opened up and accepted the fact that there are people who love her. Because she'll need them in the battles to come.

This is a series that must be read in order and cannot be read as a stand-alone. Green Eyed Demon starts at the very beginning with very fast paced action and holds a steady pace until the nail biting end. There is a very climatic fight at the end of the book. We have quite a few new characters and beings, also many of the mages from book two carry over, while several characters from the first book drop by to wreak havoc on Sabina’s life. One of the characters from Red-Headed Stepchild that makes an appearance is so out of left field I am still wondering how it was pulled off and it made complete sense. A new big bad evil is also introduced

Sabina’s quest to find her twin sister takes her, Giguhl and Adam to New Orleans. They acquire the tip from the being that they kidnap in the fight at the beginning of the book. Rhea has arranged for them to stay at her friend’s home. This friend happens to be a voodoo priestess who resides with a drag queen. There is hilarity from the moment the drag queen is introduced. The voodoo priestess and Sabina get into a mess of trouble in cemetery one night. This installment in the series is going to answer a lot of questions. Before the majority of the questions from the previous books are answered several new problems and conflicts will arise to give you all new questions.

I love how Sabina’s character is evolving. Her attitude is changing. Sabina is taking Oprah like advice from Giguhl and getting to know her emotions. I love Giguhl. He is dishing out advice that one can only imagine came from Dr. Phil’s mouth. This does not take away from the tough kick ass heroine that drives this series. It actually makes her more likable. She is still tough and snarky, yet she is beginning to trust the people that have come into her life.

A tad disappointed. Not much. But a tad. Green-Eyed Demon was not as good as Red-Headed Stepchild or The Mage in Black, but it was still a really good book that kept me flipping the pages. Can't wait for Silver-Tongued Devil to come out!

Disclaimer:
I apologize in advance for any hurt feeling I may cause with this next part of my review.

I need to get something off my chest.
FUGLIEST COVER EVER! Gah! It looks like some kind of a conspiracy between the make-up artist and the photographer. Putting a green background on pasty white skin...not a good idea. The result gives the model a zombie grey pallor. Ewww. Couple that with the whacked-out grey eye-shadow? Urp. Now, throw in the crazy red/black hair. Yeah, I know that's how she's supposed to look...but still. It's the perfect recipe for Ugly Sauce!

Sabina recently found her twin sister, but in true fashion her twin has been kidnapped by her grandmother. On top of that, the Dark Races are about to go to war & are being manipulated by an order no one seems to know about.

As usual, Sabina has her back up squad, Team Awesome or Team Yay or Whatever they want to name themselves cause it keeps a changing, Giguhl the coolest mischief demon around & Adam the hunky mage! They end up in New Orleans hunting for Sabina’s twin, but there are all sorts of attacks springing up, from humans to vampires to weres. But the past comes a calling & Sabina has to face it head on.

Jaye Wells is now the Queen of all things snarky, with things like:

■Smack a Bitch
■Humidity hair resembling pubic hair
■Pot shots at vampires who sparkle
■Giguhl calling Sabina a Trampire
Is it any wonder why I now have a epic fangirl crush on Jaye Wells? How can you not love Ms. Wells when she spits out snark venom like a spring rain shower? I can count on one hand authors that make me laugh out loud, Jaye Wells is one of those authors.

Green Eyed Demon is so fast paced, I didn’t realize I was reading so damn fast until I hit the last page! It’s just that good! HOT HOT HOT!

Now while I would love to tell you more, there are to many ways for me to risk spoiling it for you. Seriously. If you just need to know, check out the other reviews on Goodreads. But I won’t be telling you anything other then HOLY SNAP DRAGONS! Green Eyed Demon is Jaye Wells BEST writing to date, it’s up & down & horizontal. Grr.

By the way, I’d like my own Giguhl! I love him. LOVE. The lines that he has this time around had me hysterical, I may have shed a tear or two.

There are new characters, one of which I totally fell in love with & hope we see more of (please bring her back!) & new surprises that come out of nowhere. All in all, Green Eyed Demon will leave you begging for more. Sabina Kane kicks ass, takes names & stomps on em.

When I say run & get a copy of Green Eyed Demon, I really mean fly. It’s sooo worth it to run as fast as you can. Please? I need to talk to someone about the whole plotline without spoiling it!! AHHHHH!!

My first 5 star review of 2011 goes straight to Green Eyed Demon!

Originally planned as a trilogy (I believe) the Sabina Kane series has gained enough readers to allow Wells to extend the series. Silver Tounge Devil (Book #4) should be out late 2011.
At the end of The Mage in Black Sabina's newly discovered twin sister, Maisie, was kidnapped by her vampire grandmother and now Sabina is determined to save her. With Adam and Gighul backing her up, Sabina heads to New Orleans for a kickass confrontation with Lavinia and the Caste of Nod.
Once again the setting of the story changes, from New York to LA and now New Orleans. This allows Wells to introduce another group of temporary characters - Voodoo priestess, Zenobia, changeling drag queen, Brooks/Pussy Willow, lesbian werewolf bar owner, Mac, and a reclusive rock star, Erron Zorn, who also happens to be an excommunicated mage. It's a cast that makes things interesting and fun.
Green Eyed Demon picks up the pace with plenty of action as Sabina dodges the members of the Caste Of Nod and her grandmother's vampire minions. Capturing Styx (the red eyed owl)and using her evolving Clothonic powers, gives Sabina the information she needs to stop her grandmother in the quest to raise Cain. An epic battle means some shocking lossses for Sabina. You can see how Wells intended to tie up the trilogy before it got its reprieve, so Green Eyed Demon makes for a satisying resolution to some of the plot threads, but leaves new ones to build on.
Green Eyed Demon is an entertaining installment in the Sabina Kane series. I know I will be looking forward to the next book, this series has been a real suprise and I am eager to follow it.

Yes, I'm a bit disappointed in this installment of the series. It was veeeerrrry slow up until about half way through. Nothing was really happening, I felt like the story was stalling and almost going around in circles for that long, which was a bit boring. Even though Sabina was with Adam.

We meet some fae characters when the setting of this book switches to New Orleans. This might've been one of the good points. I loved "Pussy-Willow" (Brooks). His, or is it her, character was entertaining, funny, and it definitely added to the storyline. And how cute was Gighul with him? Or is it her?

Anyway, what happened to Valva? Yeah, yeah, I know there's a short story coming out to answer that question. I was just hoping to see them together. (In case you didn't know, Violet Tendencies). I still love Gighul, he's one of my favorite characters, and there should've been even more of him!!!

Some things in the story were a bit unnecessary (like the midget orgy), and even though I find it funny when a book makes fun of "vampires that sparkle", maybe it's starting to get old and overused?

The book does get better towards the end and there's a bit more action, and more of the style of previous books which is why I still liked it, so I'll definetely keep reading this series.

Sabina Kane's to-do list:
1. Rescue sister.
2. Murder grandmother.
3. Don't upset the voodoo priestess.

My list:
1. Write a short review of this book
2. Delete the two remaining novels in this series
3. Read the last novella, just to get an idea of how things end.

Halfway through this book I realized I don't care what happens to Sabina & co. I've been trying to stay positive, but I just can't seem to connect with the characters. I'm sure it didn't help my ratings of the Sabina Kane series that I've been reading Kim Harrison's Hollows series alongside this one. In comparison, this book lacks both the character depth, detailed plots and the engaging characters that make The Hollows so intriguing. While the characters in Kim Harrison's books make me smile, giggle, cringe, rage and sob, I've fought to stifle my yawns each time a character in The Sabina Kane world bites the dust. (And they frequently do. Sometimes it feels like the authors kills off characters because she can't be bothered to write about more than 4-5 characters at the time. Too hard to keep track, perhaps?)

Anyway, I'm going to read the final novella and hope that it summarizes the ending for me. If it doesn't... Well, I can live with that too... I'm going back to the Hollows, and feeling satisfied with my decision:-)

2 stars.

There was one element in this book that made no sense. Sabina is half vampire half mage, but throughout the book she is in training to learn how to use her mage magic. Her vampire enemies drink blood from mages and instantly know how to use that magic. Shouldn't someone whose magic is natural to them be able to use it better than someone who drinks the blood of a person with magic?

Green Eyed Demon – Jaye Wells Third book in the Sabina Kane series
When Ms Wells handed me one of her books at RT, I was gob smacked. Here’s this amazingly funny, extremely snarky, very much reluctant adult author (seriously I need to borrow you to come to Australia) handing a book to little ole me. Now before any of you out there get jealous a word to the wise. It’s a huge responsibility to be handed a book by the author to review. Seriously HUGE. I got to know Ms Wells before reading her books and man did I feel the pressure wanting to review her babies in a good light.
I don’t know what I was worried about. I have to say it was the best new to me series I started last now and I hunger for more. The series stared with Red Headed Step Child, there was a short prequel Vampsploitation in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance vol 2 then The Mage in Black. Once I finished Mage, I found myself hungering for more. I started looking at my cat and wondering if by sheer dint of will I can transform her into my own Giguhl (note while said cat hasn’t morphed into a demon, I can say she has morphed into the demon cat lol) I pouted when I read that Green Eyed Demon wouldn’t be out until March 2011 then,,,, I was lucky to get a copy to review. That squeee you heard two nights ago was me. I promptly cleared my review schedule, tasked my husband and son to fend for themselves and dove right in.

Ms Wells has the same sort of snarky humor that I do and I knew I was in for a treat. This book didn’t disappoint. I do have to drop a tiny spoiler but a line on page 40 jumped out at me and had hubby yelling from the bedroom “SHUT UP ITS 1AM!!” The line is about Hollywood and their take on vampires… “Hollywood has been getting vampires wrong for decades. Don’t get me started on the soulless undead thing….or the godsdamned sparkling”

For those of you who have read the earlier books and fallen for Giguhl (see above) you are going to love the amount of page time he has in this book. This book is not really about growth of an individual character even though there is some of it happening but more about the revelations and realizations that characters have about themselves.

The fight scenes are intense and action packed and as a reader you are never quite sure of the outcome. The suspense builds gradually and makes you sit forward on your chair, bite your nails and clench your butt cheeks while not once becoming so overpowering that you want to skip to the end to see how it all works out

We are introduced to some great new characters such as Brookes aka PW and Zen but I won’t say anything more because I want to you go out and buy this book yourself. More branches of magic users come to light and you begin to see that magic isn’t good or bad, or black and white. Its more the intent of the user that makes it one or the other. There are heart stuttering moments when I found myself debating about turning the page because I was unsure of the outcome but I just had to turn them.
All in all this is a great book. The ending………… well let’s just say “Ms Wells you are EVIL I say EVILL!!!!! Look out for the next book in this series Silver Tongued Devil due out hopefully the end of this year

Green Eyed Demon is a major improvement over its predecessor. I laughed, I cried, I sniggered at the dirty, filthy orgy. Yes, you read correctly.

What made this so good other than Giguhl's rib-crackingly funny comments, was Sabina's growth. She's been through hell and is having to adapt quickly along the way. It's a rocky road. She makes mistakes. She gets knocked down but she always, always picks her wounded ass back up and lives to fight for another day.

Her fierce determination in protecting those she loves gives her pause. She loves? When did that happen? She's a kick-ass emotionless assassin. Since when did she love anyone, or have anyone to love her? She questions her identity. She was an assassin but who and what is she now? All this leaves her vulnerable and confused. She does her best to cope but the pressures of her sister's kidnapping, her homicidal grandmother and her undefined relationship with Adam, get in the way.

Speaking of Adam. The title refers to Sabina's jealousy regarding him and Giguhl. Her family. Hers. No one elses. They're there when she needs them: in battle, for advice and for a shoulder to cry on. The most useful advice comes from Giguhl (it's all that Oprah he watches) who tell her to seize the day because there may not be a tomorrow.

Sabina has so much to accomplish that she's advised to make a To Do List which went:
1. Perform voodoo ritual on evil owl.
2. Find out who sold us out to the anachronistic Caste vampires.
3. Make amends with lesbian werewolf.
4. Rescue twin.
5. Murder grandmother.

Surreal, no?

Anyway, this is fast-paced with lots of action, a little romance and tons of laughs. However, I can't give it 5 stars for one major reason which is difficult to explain without spoilers but I'll give it a shot. But you have been warned.

There were two characters that were near death. One was healed with the help of 3 very powerful mages but the other, only one for an injury that I would assume given the magic rules, would be impossible to "heal". Plus, the circumstances in which they were injured meant that person should be dead. This didn't sit well with me which is why it's taken me so long to write a review. But I can also see it from the author's point of view. This character was important and needed to survive but wanted to keep the "everyone thinks they're dead" angst (which was excellent by the way. It produced a highly emotional action scene).

I've never taken to Sabina's overly optimistic and wishy-washy sister so I was pleased she "suffered". I don't wish for her to be jaded, she just needs a bit more reality in her world view to make her more likeable.

The excerpt from the next book was intriguing. 114 days without violence, huh? Sounds dull. Not for long, I bet!

omg, what can i say Jaye Wells has done it again, this book was mind blowing, totaly amazing. I would so recomend people read this book. Its fun and fast paced and keeps you at the edge of your seat.Well worth the read..

SABINA-She is half mage and half vamp, she is totaly kick ass.In this book she has to team up with lover adam (mage) and Giguhl (demon) to save her sister Maisie. But to save her sister she has to come up against the baddest vamp around, which only turns out to be her grandmother Lavinia Kane.Sabina all so has to stop her grandmother from starting a war between all the dark races in the world.I had no doubt at all the Sabina would sort things out, she is a strong woman who can hold her own. I think more females in books should be like her...

ADAM- Mage hottie, he uses magic to help Sabina save her sister and fight her grandmother. He is very smart and powerful but one thing in this book made me all most put the book down and never read it again, I so thought Adam was killed and I was gutted about it, when Maisie drained him of blood I wanted to put the book in the bin and never have to look at it again.I was heart broken...but I plodded on and carried on reading and guess what he survived.I was relieved because if he didn't make it, it would of spoiled the rest of the books for me,I wouldn't of been able to read on...

GIGUHL-Omg what can I say, he is the funniest thing iv ever heard of, i love him to bits...he's tuff and strong and has saved Sabina's butt a couple of times. He can change from demon to cat and back again, its so funny when he turns from cat to demon because he has a forked dick and he gets strange reactions when people see it, i my self would be very interested to see this for my self....

over all this book is a must read, its fun and exciting and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Its full of all kinds of people from drag queens, vamps were wolfs and mages, its full of great friendships and powerful magic...if you were only allowed to read one book this year is tell you to read this one....

After reading the second novel in the series I wasn’t sure which way Green-Eyed Demon was going to go, it could either live up to the fun and exciting first book, or live up to the disappointing second novel. Happily this novel definitely made up for the boring and flat second book; full of action, romance, and witty dialogue this novel was a fantastic addition to the Sabina Kane series.

What I loved most about this novel was that Sabina finally started to open up and throw away her unfeeling and unemotional mask. She finally started allowing Adam and Giguhl to care about her and let them be a part of her team, instead of arguing over every move they made to assist her. The romance between Adam and Sabina finally surfaced as she let him into her life and allowed him to care about her.

This novel also introduced a cast of colorful new characters, from Brooks a cross-dressing changeling fae to Zenobia a voodoo priestess. Along with Giguhl and his colorful personality the entire group made for one hilarious moment after another. Their antics broke up the intense action scenes and made me laugh, lightening the mood of what would have been a more serious novel.

With near death experiences, zombies, an angry werewolf, and an evil grandmother this novel was far from boring. Between the constant action and the blossoming romance between Adam and Sabina this novel was nearly impossible to put down. With a fantastic climax and a great ending that left me eager for the sequel this was one of the best novels in the Sabina Kane series so far.

Even though the second novel fell a little flat I still really enjoy the Sabina Kane series. The series may not be the most memorable but it’s still fun and full of great characters. A great way to spend an afternoon the Sabina Kane series is the way to go for fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.

My Rating: 3 & A Half Stars

The first half of this book left a little to be desired, but the second half totally made up for it!

Sabina was as stubborn as ever. It wasn't until the last few chapters that she understood that her, Adam and Giguhl were her family as well as friends. There was no need to become a martyr and go on an impossible mission where she would most likely get killed. Those last few scenes were so precious. My heart was in my throat when it was all over.

I adore Adam for so many reasons. One of them being his patience with Sabina in knowing that forcing a relationship on her would get them nowhere very quickly. I love how understanding he is and I do hope they manage to stay together and make it work because both are very hard headed when it comes to their actions in certain situations.

The supporting characters made themselves memorable to me in this book. As much as I wanted to strangle Madam Zen because of how snarky and not helpful she was being, she really brought something interesting to this story. PW was very quiet in the beginning, but after the attack in the house she made herself very memorable. Giguhl was amazing as ever.

The ending had me from the beginning of the battle. The action was awesome and the turn out couldn't have been better. I almost cried when Adam got what he got. The good thing is that everything worked out in the end.

The Audio Book:

I liked this reading of Silver-Tongued Devil. I only had one problem: The way every character pronounced 'New Orleans'. I'm from the Boston area and I just discovered New Yorker's (which is where all the main characters are from) pronounce 'New Orleans' in a very different way then I was taught. I eventually got used to it, but it took some time.

Sabine’s twin sister Maisie has been kidnapped by their evil vampire grandmother Lavinia. Now the journey has taken Sabine and her side-kicks mage Adam & demon Giguhl, them to New Orleans. The council has given them a mission; find Lavinia and stop her before she summons Cain and if that means they find Maisie along the way, that’s a bonus. But Sabine’s priority is her sister and will do anything in her power to save her.

Sabine’s relationship with Adam is getting stronger, but she is still questioning every emotion and doesn’t give in easily. Then the danger around them builds up and she realizes it might be the last chance they have together.

Green-Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells is the third novel in her Sabine Kane Series and it seems the books are getting better and better. It’s full of action, danger, some kick-ass characters and determination to succeed.

Sabine has team-up with Adam and Giguhl in the last book and I’m happy to see that it’s still the same, but once in awhile Sabine forgets and goes hunting on her own, which will sometime leads to trouble.

The attraction between Adam and Sabine is growing by the minute, but for some silly reasons she holds back. Adam is patience and is taking a lot of “cold” showers, but he is determined to make her see that they belong together.

We meet some great new secondary characters; a human voodoo priestess, a drag queen and a female werewolf, who all come along on this journey to stop the evil Lavinia for calling Cain back. Maisie has a rough time in this novel, being tortured that way, so Lavinia can hurt Sabine, but payback is a bitch as Lavinia gets what she deserves.

As I said before the books are getting better and better, so this novel is definitely worth your time to read. You are in for a fabulous ride on a roller coaster.

I come to this series as a new reader. Having never read any of the Sabine Kane series, I was concerned that I would have a hard time following the story line, or that I would be too lost to want to continue. However, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this novel works just fine as a standalone.

What worked for me:

I love the mythology, with the vampires having descended from Cain and Lilith.
I have to admit that Sabina’s potty mouth is incredibly endearing to me. I love her temper and her snarky attitude, as well as her quirky sense of humor.
Can I just say how much I adore Adam? *swoon*
As much as I loved Sabina, I have to say the colorful secondary characters are what really made this story.
the ending was explosive, with action and angst worthy of the big screen.
What didn’t work for me:

A few of the minor characters did get a bit confusing, as all characters in this story were “new” to me, so it was at times a bit hard to keep track of everyone
There was most definitely a Too Stupid To Live moment, or at least a Too Stubborn to Live one, which always annoys me in romances.
While I definitely think that this novel was able to hold its own as a standalone novel, I will say that my recommendation would be to read the series in order. It’s obvious that as a new reader, I missed out on some exciting back story, including some of the group dynamics. Even so, I was able to follow along very well, with only a bit of minor confusion surrounding some of the minor characters.

Overall? I was highly entertained by this novel and would recommend it to any Urban Fantasy fan. 5/5 Stars

Exceptional 3rd book. The ending wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped but didnt have the feel of a true cliff hanger either. The primary conflicts of the book were dealt with but a lot of loose ends were left hanging out. Things that will probably be used for storyline in the next book/s but resolving at least some of them might have made for a more satisfying ending.

The story was fast paced and the 3 book nemesis arc was satisfactorily concluded. The story provided plenty of history to introduce an ominous new villain that promises to be bigger, better, faster, more. There's so much political and social intrigue and conflict, and so many different possibilities with the prophesies, that this series could go for a long time, I think.

The protag's personal growth, seen in leaps and bounds in the second book, was a bit fluid and tended to come and go in this book - but then how many of us learn a lesson once and never have to repeat it to ourselves again?

The romance also made large strides in this book and, like the second book, there was one well written sex scene.

I really think my favorite character in this series is the protag's demon familiar, Giguhl. He's been a great character throughout the series, provide both comedic relief and the occasional relief from the protag's self flagellation with delightfully unexpected insight.

Negatives? The book wasn't copy edited as well as it could have been. Typos and grammer errors were pretty plentiful. The "can't think about it right now" trope is giving way a bit to the "I'm not worthy" trope. I hope the latter gets navigated through as quickly as the former was.

This series is going on my auto buy list.

I just finished reading "Green-Eyed Demon" and cannot believe how this series just keeps getting better and better. I am constantly amazed how Jaye Wells manages to enthrall me with her wonderful world building, humor, and writing ability. I mean, come on, who can write about a apple juice wielding vampire assassin, horny cat/demon, sexy mage and a realistic sadistic grandma that even I wanted to kill?

Sabina's twin sister has been kidnapped and she must get her back. She must go to N'awlins to find her and of course do battle with Granny Dearest. In addition, there is an evil begging to be brought into the world, Cain. Cain goes by the name of Master Mahan and his familiar is an irritating red-eyed owl, Stryx. I have to tell you that I was so glad that he gets what is coming to him in this book (Ha!).

Throughout the rescue, Sabina is plagued by weird dreams, mounting feeling for the Mage,Adam and her ever increasing need to control her uncontrollable temper. Boy, is this something to read about (smile). I especially enjoyed several of the new characters like Zenobia and Pussy Willow. This was another book I just could not put down until I gobbled down every morsel.

I went to the author's website to find out how many books there are in the series. I discovered that the series will end after book five. I must say I am saddened and relieved. Why relieved? Too many authors do not know how to end a series while it is still on top. They write book after book where the plot weakens until it just is no longer there. I am glad that Jaye Wells is smart enough to know when to quit. Pick up this series and enjoy the incredible reading feast.

I've read both of Wells' other books. I loved Sabina from page one. In this book, we see a flawed and possibly broken-beyond-repair Kane. Her character arc has taken a downward turn for sure. We don't have as much of the sizzle and sass as we did in the first two. She's darker. It's obvious her choices in the first two books are weighing on her...changing her.

I didn't like this Sabina as much because she is darker. Her character growth seems to be taking her into a very twisted place. While I may not have liked her as much, I loved her story. I loved her interaction with Gighul and "mancy". Gighul really had a chance to shine in this book which made me happy. I have a fondness for his bratty self.

This Sabina Kane showed her struggling with her own green-eyed demon, and we aren't talking jealousy. She has to battle who she thinks she is, who she believes she is and who she really is. I can’t wait to read the next book, I absolutely love this series.

Jaye Wells knows how to tell a damned good story. If you want a character who never ever changes, don't start this series. Wells lets Sabina grow and not always in a very heroic way. But it's always believable.

I kind of stormed through this one in my 'need to know' frenzy. So Maisie had been sister-napped by their seriously warped grand-mother and 'Team-Awesome' go off on the trail.

It was a bit frustrating at times as all their leads kept dead-ending and they were wandering a bit in the plot. Then there was the frustration of character-growth for Sabina which involved a lot of backing down and tongue-biting. I didn't like how (even those supposed to be on her side) everyone gets on the Sabina-slap-down train. No one seems to have her back until it starts hitting the fan.

But there was growth and a major development romantically as well as with the overall story arc of Cain, Lilith and the bigger picture.

I've already downloaded the next in the series Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells
