“Credo che per "entrare" nei luoghi il giornalista debba ascoltare la strada, cioè le voci deboli distanti dai riflettori dei media. Per farlo bene, deve accettare alcune regole di comportamento. Primo: sparire, mescolandosi alla gente se possibile fingendosi di non essere giornalista. Secondo: condividere, cioè dare qualcosa di suo - anche un semplice racconto - per trasformare l'intervista in un rapporto di scambio. Terzo: viaggiare lentamente per attraversare le periferie del mondo minore. Solo così saprà avvertire le mutazioni lunghe e non farsi sorprendere dai deragliamenti improvvisi della modernità.
La vecchia bicicletta consente tutto questo. Essa è dunque uno straordinario strumento di reportage. Ti immerge nel contesto, ignorato da questo giornalismo cieco, fatto solo di primi piani. È anche una macchina dei pensieri, che offre al tuo scrivere il ritmo giusto dell'andare. È un mantra che rende il racconto più musicale, dunque ascoltabile.”
