This book was written too long ago for me to think that's likely. I've also read before that many characters in this book are loosely based on real life Atlanta personalities. Charlie does make me think about Trump a lot, but Charlie is a consummate rural southerner, whereas Trump is a product of upperclass Jersey/NY. Their minds may strike me as similar, but they are miles apart in terms of cultural background.

There may be similarities, but the differences are stark, and not just because one is southern and the other Manhattan. Croker has more insight into himself from the get-go. This makes him more easily able to understand why his world collapses around him. This makes it easier for him to change. Could Trump listen to a 'loser' like Conrad, much less let that loser influence him? Not the way I understand him. Then, Croker works to shape his environment when he can to make it comfortable, but he does not try to shape reality the way Trump does. He respects it in a way that the President does not.

I always thought John Portman was the inspiration for Charile Croker. https://www.ajc.com/news/local/john-p...

There are far too many other men in the US who aptly fit this description to narrrow it down to just Trump, unfortunately. Besides, Coker the character shows far more intellect, character, insight, and ultimately contrition to be based on Trump. But the entitlement and greed surely must’ve been triggering for you.

According to my Georgia Tech Alumni husband, Charlie Croker's character is based on Kim King, football player star for Georgia Tech 1964-67. I looked him up, and indeed, among other things, he became a developer and founded his own firm.

To me, this seems too far-fetched (2 decades eventually separated the novels first publication and Trumps 21st century future tour-de-force that led His Blondness into the White House plush). Croker is less shallow than he seems and is more aware of the mingling of the has-been and the comeback man he still is.
I know The Bonfire Of The Vanities is considered as the better-told story, but who cares about plot details in The Man In Full? Trump won't tell us the answer. He lets America rule by free employees paid by The New York Post.

I'm not certain he was a model for Charlie Croker, but Charlie has popped into my mind often lately when I read stories about some of the shell games Trump has played with his real estate deals.

Absolutely my first thought! Real estate, football, trophy wife, reactionary views etc. But of course Trump's a Yankee, so I wouldnt be too sure - there must be a dozen southerners who fit the profile too.
