I read this book a few years ago but since the 2016 presidential election everything I have heard about Donald Trump puts me in mind of Charlie Croker. Was Trump Wolfe's model for this character? What do other readers think?

Croker has more insight into himself from the get-go. This makes him more easily able to understand why his world collapses around him. This makes it easier for him to change. Could Trump listen to a 'loser' like Conrad, much less let that loser influence him? Not the way I understand him. Then, Croker works to shape his environment when he can to make it comfortable, but he does not try to shape reality the way Trump does. He respects it in a way that the President does not.(less)
