This is the first book that I read in the series. And I loved it. I suspect the reasons for the low ratings is that it addresses uncomfortable topics. Racism, sexism, and how women are perceived and treated in our society.
I find it interesting that alot of the folks seemed to think of Antoinette as a negative character. I wonder how they would react if they were welcomed to their dream job by someone pissing in their locker. I guess if you don't want a realistic view of what it is like to be a brown woman in a workplace of all white men then this is the wrong book for you. I find Antoinette cheeky, introspective, smart, brave and most of all persistent. The character is a new detective trying to learn despite not having a mentor. The men surrounding her come with hidden agendas which make it difficult for her to ascertain who is on her side and who isn't.
The victim in this novel is also a character that not many people would be sympathetic for. She is difficult to pin down. Superficial beauty seems to be her defining quality, and that men are obsessed with her looks which seems to be the reason for her demise.
I find this book layered and complex. The characters aren't all good, or bad. They are layered. They are loyal, but also vidictive. They are passionate in both good and bad ways.
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the dubliner accent. It really got me into the mood of the book. If you have a difficult time understanding accents I suggest that you slow down the speed.

Just finished it, can't quite say I loved it but it was a fantastic experience. It did take me a bit to get into as Antoinette is a deeply negative character. I finally started liking (Relating to) her in chapter 13. Stellar writing, complex and compelling. Reading her books and finishing is like coming out of the movie theater into daylight-you have to readjust to the real world.

I was very disappointed with this book. I've liked her previous books very much but don't think this one is very good. I thought the plot development was ponderous and had to force myself to finish it. I kept hoping that it would get better!

I read it and loved it. I recently re-read it. I really love the character of Antoinette Conway. The things she says in her head about what she really thinks of the people she's talking to very closely resemble what I am often thinking but not saying. I say, good for her. Some readers thought Antoinette was too grating, but when I re-read this book, I liked her much more than first time around. The plot was not as good as The Likeness, which is a masterpiece of terror and danger, but the story was a good one, nonetheless. Wheels within wheels. Those who are looking for action adventures would do better to read another author. Tana French is not an action movie writer.

Well the rating now that it is out is above four--making it her second highest rated book (behind only The Likeness). I loved this book. As with all of her books, I couldn't put it down. I still think about some of the characters months later--they're that well-developed. And this one is almost like a horror-novel as you start to realize that maybe you can't trust your narrator because she has such a cynical world view.

This is the first one in the series that I am reading and it's not a problem. I highly recommend this book; her writing is magnificent.
Helen
It's just nowhere near as great as all her others ,I was shocked ,it's preposterous at times ,like they muse and come up with silly theories based on er nothing but just oooh it cd be this ,even the characters say it after realising that er yes it was preposterous theory's with no evidence and a lot of the book is like that
I also didn't warm to lead detective ,I don't mind unlikable characters ,flawed people but she just annoyed and grated me and was so negative

The last two books were almost the same for me. Too much dialogue about how in interrogate suspects, when to interrogate suspects, should I, shouldn't I. I wanted action, not so much introspection. I could only read for so long before I would have to put it down.
Richard
Ponderous plot. Deeply unlikable main character. After 70% of the novel, nothing much had happened. Perhaps the point of the novel is to reveal that detective work is so boring that detectives need to carp at each other just to get through their boring days. The main character is shallow, narcissistic, and quick to wrong judgements. The only thing about this book that I enjoyed was the Irish slang.
Megan BG
1 person rated it 3 and 1 a 1? But neither put any comments, so I'm going to ignore the low rating until people start giving it real reviews.
Gabrielle
I don't know! I just finished it and I think it's her best yet! 5 stars!

I did read this - and my 2 star rating stands. Agree with Jan, Helen, Jane (see below)
Jane
I downloaded the audible version. Had difficulty understanding the narrator and found the story dragged on.
Lisa
Yes, I did. I gave it a low rating because I found it tedious to get through. Long and boring.
Theresa
I'm sorry I can't even finish it. I had to research the ending because I'm more than half way through...waiting for something to happen. Ugh! I do like her writing, but this was uneventful and did not capture my attention at all.
Suzy Miss
3.97 is not a low rating. It is so slow and boring
Gwyneth
I really liked it. I didn't guess the murderer until the end.
Rebekah Turpin-coker
This is my least favorite of all French's novels. Most of them keep me on the edge of my seat, excited to see who did it and to see who will be destroyed by the truth. But this one was just off. I felt it drug on and i didn't connect with a single person in the novel.
Chris
I agree with Jane, below. The audio version is bad. I think I will ditch it for the printed version and see what happens.
Carl Jenkins
It is now released. You should start seeing the ratings start coming in and a more realistic "score" showing up. I'm not quite through yet. Overall, I like it, but there are a couple of elements that don't quite mesh for me yet at this stage.
Laura
I haven't read it yet, but read ALL previous and they were great! Can't imagine this not being great either. It is fairly new book, maybe no one has read yet!
Marilee
The book isn't being released in the UK until August, in the USA in Oct. The people rating it so far have been using ARC, Advance reader copies and the current rating based on some 35 advance reviews is very very good, 4.26.
T.ScottReviews
It's not been published yet.
Amy
It might be from people accidentally pressing the rating button when they add the book to their shelves, and not realising it afterwards
Lisa
It isn't going to be published until later this year
