I suspect the reasons for the low ratings is that it addresses uncomfortable topics. Racism, sexism, and how women are perceived and treated in our society.

I find it interesting that alot of the folks seemed to think of Antoinette as a negative character. I wonder how they would react if they were welcomed to their dream job by someone pissing in their locker. I guess if you don't want a realistic view of what it is like to be a brown woman in a workplace of all white men then this is the wrong book for you. I find Antoinette cheeky, introspective, smart, brave and most of all persistent. The character is a new detective trying to learn despite not having a mentor. The men surrounding her come with hidden agendas which make it difficult for her to ascertain who is on her side and who isn't.

The victim in this novel is also a character that not many people would be sympathetic for. She is difficult to pin down. Superficial beauty seems to be her defining quality, and that men are obsessed with her looks which seems to be the reason for her demise.

I find this book layered and complex. The characters aren't all good, or bad. They are layered. They are loyal, but also vidictive. They are passionate in both good and bad ways.

I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the dubliner accent. It really got me into the mood of the book. If you have a difficult time understanding accents I suggest that you slow down the speed. (less)
