I know this is an old question, but an excellent read aloud is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Loved it!!

Another vote for Wonder by RJ Palacio. You can follow those up with Pluto and the Julian Chapters.
Your son might also enjoy reading about Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. There are loads of books about them. The one I loved at age 9 was called Helen Keller's Teacher by Margaret Davidson.

I would recommend a book called " The land of stories". It dosen't really relate to Out of my mind, but it is a great book for someone his age. There are four books. The last book came out recently. It would be a good book for your daughter to read too! the books are "The Wishing spell", "The Enchantress returns", "A Grimm warning", and "Beyond the castles". I read them and I really enjoyed them. In your mind, it takes you to another world.

I would recommend book that is called The war that saved my life and after that book The war I finally won this books are heartwarming

I would strongly caution against Wonder by Palacio myself. I felt like Palacio's perspective felt very much so what an outsider views life with disabilities and people with disabilities to be, rather then a true perspective. Searching through interviews about the book I could find any info on any actual personal time she spent with children with disabilities to guide her writing, which is why I think it rings false. It also felt like inspiration porn, basically using a person with disabilities who is doing normal everyday things, as a prop to "inspire" "normal" people. Here is a link that goes more into inspiration porn http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-p....
I would instead consider reading Rain,Reign by Anne Martin, Al Capone Does my Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko (though this might be a bit too mature for an 8 year old), El Deafo by Cece Bell, or Wonderstuck by Selznick. All of these books the author spent a great deal of time with people who had the disabilities they are writing about, or they themselves have the disabilities.

Another book that a person might like is Wonder. It is awesome.
Miriam
you read the second one

When your kids are a little older, you might want to read Copper Sun, which is another one of Sharon M. Draper's books. If you enjoyed the style of Out of My Mind, it's a great read.
Coleen
Petey is a really great book to read with your son. Enjoy.
Princess
I highly recommend Wonder as well as Rules.
Barbara Schultz
I highly recommend "Fish in a Tree"!
Ava Biffer
Mrs. Draper's new book, Stella by Starlight, is available now. It's excellent.
Sophia Jones
Mockingbird, by Kathryn Erskine is pretty similar to out of my mind but not as good

I know it's an old question, but I thought you might be interested - the sequel to "Out of My Mind" is coming out in November. Titled "Out of My Heart", it follows Melody as she goes to summer camp for the first time.

I think you should read “rain reign” by Ann m Martin. It would be sorta hard to read out loud though. It’s about a girl with Asperger’s syndrome who is obsessed with homonyms, prime numbers, and rules, but one day, her dog rain, whom she named rain because it has two homonyms, reign and rein, and was also found in the rain, goes missing. This ones one of my favorites.
Mia (A Happy Little Bookworm)
The Honest Truth & Wonder are both great options.

I am reading Out of My Mind right now, and truly loving it. Your question immediately brought to mind the book Wishtree, but Katherine Applegate. I read it to my Reading students last year and we all loved it.
Paige Turner
Not reccomended for 8 year olds, but for out of my mind lovers a little older, "Its my life" is very good.

Read Waiting for Mr. Hyde by Shannon Frances White! The main character is a fourteen year old girl who has Cerebral Palsy. It is AMAZING!!!!! The really cool thing is that the author has Cerebral
Palsy too. 💕
Palsy too. 💕

Counting by Sevens by Holly Goldberg Sloan is a similarly wonderful book. I'd definitely put this and Wonder together with Out of My Mind as real life-changing, life affirming #choosekind kind of books.
Evi
I suggest Wings of Fire or Spirit Animals.
Roxie

WONDER IT'S AMAZING

My students also loved reading "Wonder." I thought about that book a lot when I was reading this one. Another one that this book reminded me of (strictly because of the Whiz Kids Bowl) is "The View from Saturday." This one was harder for my students to get into, but I loved it.
Zoë
Yes! Definitely Wonder is a good choice.
Selena Tetteh

I know I don't know what to read!
Molly Donovan
Like a lot of people already have said, if you haven't read Wonder, read it!!!
Marta Saldivar
is there a annotation to the book out of my mind?
Liz Logan
I agree with Wonder by Palacio. Racing in the Rain by Stein (the young reader's edition) might be a good one too.
