Naomi asked this question about Out of My Mind (Out of My Mind, #1):
I read this book to our 8-year-old son upon recommendation from our 10-year-old daughter whose teacher read it to them aloud. I MISS reading about Melody now that this book is over. What do you read NEXT after reading a book this good?

I felt like Palacio's perspective felt very much so what an outsider views life with disabilities and people with disabilities to be, rather then a true perspective. Searching through interviews about the book I could find any info on any actual personal time she spent with children with disabilities to guide her writing, which is why I think it rings false. It also felt like inspiration porn, basically using a person with disabilities who is doing normal everyday things, as a prop to "inspire" "normal" people. Here is a link that goes more into inspiration porn http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ellen-p....

I would instead consider reading Rain,Reign by Anne Martin, Al Capone Does my Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko (though this might be a bit too mature for an 8 year old), El Deafo by Cece Bell, or Wonderstuck by Selznick. All of these books the author spent a great deal of time with people who had the disabilities they are writing about, or they themselves have the disabilities. (less)
