"IX Pioneers" was 28 pgs. of detailed game play...what was your reaction to this section? If you figured it out, when/how?

Amanda Davee I found this chapter distracting and tedious. I noticed connections all throughout, but took a while to realize Sam was also playing with Sadie. I think I would have found it less disruptive if it hadn't happened so close to the end of the book. It pulled me from the story in a way that was difficult to reenter before I'd reached the last page.
Sana R. Gondal I figured it out immediately and really enjoyed the references that seemed to be culminating, almost as fan service. daedalus with the maze, the creator of games. the glass heart of the community service award. go game, with his grandparents. the amputation was on the nose. etc etc. it felt obvious.

what i have mixed feelings about in the chapter is how it felt slow, really like those kinds of mmorpg games - which i have personally never had the patience for. but it was sweet, regardless. i knew it was sadie's form of therapy, and sam's form of love and devotion checking in on her everyday.
Queste This was one of my favourite chapters!

Because Sam and Sadie finally managed to connect, to be together. It paints a world where they do end up together and what that would look like - and that's kind of one of the motifs running through the book - that of alternative/simultaneously-running realities or versions of reality.

It's also heart-breakingly beautiful in the way that Sam creates a whole world for Sadie; and in that, as she says later, it was what helped her get through/get by during the months after Marx's death.

It's both the "what it could have been" and the gift from someone who loves you to help you share your pain and find joy somewhere in there, too.

Melissa I didn't suspect until the Dr. lost her hand. But, honestly this was a major turning point for me in the book. Up until this point, I was easily able to follow major timeline changes. I didn't know what was happening or why. Not my favorite turn of events.

Megjjg I could not make it through that chapter. I skimmed it witch is something I hardly ever do.
Thomas Smith This chapter didn't hold my interest and felt lengthy. There were links present throughout, but it took me a while to understand that both Sam and Sadie were participating in the game. Had this revelation occurred earlier in the book, it may not have been as disruptive to my reading experience. The timing of this realization, so close to the conclusion, caused me to lose my immersion in the story and made it challenging to regain my focus before finishing the last page.

Judith Very mixed comments about this chapter, but someone said that it beautifully "depicted worlds within worlds", & isn't that exactly the epitome of this story? Could it just be too brilliant & evolved for the average reader? (like me)

Georgettenecessities Gmailcom I didn't understand it for a very long time....thought I missed something for sure. I'm half way thru that chapter and honestly feel it ruined the book for me.
Maribeth I really enjoyed it, especially as insight into the coping mechanisms and inner processing that has to come with grief and healing. I listened to the audiobook, so perhaps it wasn't as disruptive to the flow for me.
Dena I didn't realize what was really going on until they started messaging each other at the end, I'm embarrassed to say.

Melissa Seldin I remarked to my partner, this is a great book, but there is no way the movie could compete.
Estela I did not like this chapter at all. I figured out pretty quickly that it was all Sam and Sadie, but it was boring and I skipped it almost entirely.
Morgan I absolutely hated it. It was totally unnecessary.
Shelly Krueger It was the turning point of when I lost complete interest in the book.
Lee Rayner Didn’t really like it until it and full circle with the real life people. I figured it was some kind of simulation of gaming after she first says skip. I just didn’t know what the point of it was until the end.

Meredith Miller I skimmed it, found it boring
Superqs I have to check if I missed one or two chapters in between...
Veronicabrett I was so busy trying to visualise how a game in 2007 could have the mechanics to create a glass blowing mini game within the game that I found it deeply distracting. I thought maybe it had skipped forward 50 years to a time when immersive virtual reality had been invented, so when I realised that it was just a normal game from that era I was doing mental gymnastics trying to imagine how a game could possibly achieve all of that. The way they spoke inside the game was strange too…. Maybe I have to re read it.
Judy Opatik Scott I found it boring.
Shane Markham I loved it thought it was sweet and picking up thr easter eggs of Sam
And Sadies friendship was exciting and really showd how deeply he cared for all theve been through

Jerilyn It was pretty obvious. The speech patterns mimicked the way Sam & Sadie talked to each other from the time they met. Plus all the not-so-hidden references. The Abernathy guy was less clear; it was more like Sam imagining what Marx might say.
Taylor Reiland Loved the rest of the book besides this part. I was so bored. Completely just skimmed it.
