Because Sam and Sadie finally managed to connect, to be together. It paints a world where they do end up together and what that would look like - and that's kind of one of the motifs running through the book - that of alternative/simultaneously-running realities or versions of reality.

It's also heart-breakingly beautiful in the way that Sam creates a whole world for Sadie; and in that, as she says later, it was what helped her get through/get by during the months after Marx's death.

It's both the "what it could have been" and the gift from someone who loves you to help you share your pain and find joy somewhere in there, too.(less)
