Hmm...if you were that far off the timeline, no wonder you were confused! (before this chapter, Marx was already gone & Sadie & Sam hadn't talked in months, remember?) They were once in sync, but this was Sam's last ditch effort to reconnect after all else had failed.
to James: Yes I got all that but at the immediately prior scene Sam started to write and then the next chapter was the game, which must have taken at least a year if not more to create and bring to market. I thought it was just a script of a game he was going to write....or a fantasy.
I felt the same that it was still a script, though that part where Emily says it would take a lot of circles to draw the doctor, I thought how does Sam know Sadie had thought of this? And I thought the author is so in love with her characters she is writing the script for herself, which is still beautiful, to write something so good for yourself that you forget the reader.
It all made sense when I found out they were actually playing and I was so happy! I reread the chapter because I was so overwhelmed.
I think he definitely did bring it to the market. When Ant meets Sadie in Boston he says how the whole retro game was a private project and that he is shutting it down at the end of the year. When Sam was thinking of how he will make this game, he mentioned how after one or two games the Mapeworld engine would become obsolete.
When Sadie was describing all the games she played and then how she came across Pioneers, she said how people her age from the 1980s were nostalgic and played this game. So he brought it to the market but very few players played it.
