I really enjoyed the book, but towards the end it became rather too convoluted for me, especially the part about John and Penny. Anyone care to enlighten me?

skketch You know Susan, I have to agree with that which is why I had to give it a 4 ⭐ rating. I got a bit confused by the introduction of this plot line with nothing that led up to it. Glad it wasn't just me.

J.l. Mcgrath Excellent debut of a potential mystery series. And I can see a TV series from it too.
It starts out GREAT, but toward the end gets more convoluted than needed. He may have meant that to be "red herrings" but it just clutters.

The satire and charming writing that was there for half the book lessens. One character is beautifully satirized and the rest somewhat; if he kept that up it'd be so much fun. Less plot!

E M S B Totally agree - very underwhelmed about this book - yes amusing but oh goodness the convoluted plots and all the 'tying up the ends' towards the end ... bones, ashes & bodies.... others have hopefully enlightened you by now.
Jelena Delibasic I totally agree with you. There was never a hint about John and Penny. Nothing really led to this conclusion in the end. Frankly, I'm confused.
Jane I enjoyed the book, but I didn't like the ending. Elizabeth seemed to know what was going to happen, and she let it happen. There seemed to be nothing leading to her conclusion, and it just seemed wrong to me. I also didn't know whether to trust the confessions coming from one of the characters near the end. Why would he tell the other character those things? Was he planning to murder the man he was confessing to? I also found it confusing that there were two characters named Steve, and one named Stephen. There was also more than one named Peter, and I think there might have been a couple other duplicate names. While I know that in real life, we probably all know several people who share a first name, authors tend to avoid that, and even try to avoid having two characters whose names start with the same first letter.

Inez Penny was a retired detective in a coma ( I think) who had started the Thursday Murder Club with her unsolved crimes file - John was her husband sitting by her bedside every day... I found it hard to keep track of all the bodies by the end too. My last count came to either 10 or 12... but I may have miscounted as I included Bernard and his wife, who weren't murdered and the nun who committed suicide.
Sharon i always like a little less talking and a lot more action But! l loved this book
Nuria Guzmán Same opinion here. The style of the book is great, I enjoyed it a lot, but the story line is disappointing. I felt kind a defrauded with that end.

Meredith Whitford I can't cos I have same problem, exacerbated by reading up to that point all in one sitting, then coming down with some weird one-day flu that turned my brain to mush. I finished the book (and liked it) but like Susan I didn't get the John and Penny part and can't remember who actually did the murder. Will re-read, cos I did enjoy this novel so much for its style and wit.

Dawn Cohen I loved this book, but I think it’s because I reframed my perception of the nature of this book. I enjoyed the mystery aspect, but came to appreciate it more for its observations on life stages, love, and relationships.
I agree, there were many unpredictable and convoluted twists, but I felt the reason for them was to emphasize the relationships that revolved around them.
