Lou Chiaramonte, Jr. The ability to highlight and make notes is essential for philosophical, scientific, primary source, technical, and religious volumes. The fact that e-readers can organize and list all highlights/notes makes paper texts look more and more obsolete.

Of course, one area that physical texts still have an advantage in is how they display illustrations and maps. Most e-books just aren't formatted correctly to allow maps to be viewed in a dynamic fashion. However, the potential exists and I'm sure this flaw too will eventually be rectified.

Don't get me wrong, I love browsing books in a library--its like an orgy for the mind! Its a tactile experience that online e-book catalogues can never quite mimic.

Alexandra How many hours has anyone logged in at a bookstore, library so far this year? A question for another time. And yes, a feast for the eyes, the senses. I don't see how this can be replaced down the road.

message 403: by Sherrill (new)

Sherrill I really enjoy having a Kindle so that I can buy ebooks, especially because a few years ago, I was having chemo and didn't have the energy to hold a book. Not only that, I only have so much space for books! However, having said that, I still do buy books, both paperbacks and/ or hardcover! I love being able to hold a book in my hands!! I love the printed word on the page and the feel of the paper itself.

message 404: by Sharon (new)

Sharon I don't have an e-reader and wouldn't take it if it were a gift! I still love holding a book, smelling it, enjoying the tactile joy of turning pages.

message 405: by Ayesha (new)

Ayesha Schreave Redston I do highlight because I want to let my self be reminded of some parts of the story that I considered to be important or remarkable. It helps me with my memory retention and I am used to highlighting when I study so perhaps I do the same even on reading. :)

message 406: by GrungellaVdr (new)

GrungellaVdr I like to treat my books as notebooks--I copiously underline, write in margins, highlight my heart out. There's nothing sadder-looking than a book that looks untouched, perfect in its own solace.

message 407: by Glscales (new)

Glscales I always highlight and bookmark pages. Great that we have this ability in ebooks.

message 408: by Ecarg (new)

Ecarg I copy and paste. :3

message 409: by Jess (new)

Jess Schira I highlight if I'm using the book for reference or if I spot a section I want to share with a friend, but otherwise, I don't highlight.

message 410: by Estefany (new)

Estefany i highlight all the time i read something that makes me laugh.^.^

m.m. radford Kasia wrote: "Gwen wrote: "I never highlight with the exception of Stephen King books. Whenever he makes one of those foreshadowing statements he's so fond of (e.g., he never saw her again) I have to highlight ..."

Hi, Gwen and Kasia,
I don't highlight, but I agree King is worth studying and highlighting. People pick on him for his mainstream vs. high-brow literary style, but there's a reason he holds our attention-- he tells a damn good story. BTW, how do you feel about Peter Straub's writing?

message 412: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Madden All the time! Just did so a few minutes ago... :P

message 413: by Soumya (new)

Soumya Mishra i do highlight......... most of the times......

message 414: by Teshai (new)

Teshai yup, favourite quotes, certain lines that make me laugh. Also typos

Loveyou أيوب wrote: "I still believe in the old school way
A book & a pencil ....love to keep it classic & original (^_^)"

Because nothing feels better than to have the universe between your hands, and a pencil !

message 416: by Charmaine (new)

Charmaine Distor I treat eBooks like normal books.
I do highlight remarkable quotes.
My recent highlight would be from Eleanor&Park:
"...And you make me feel like a cannibal."

message 417: by laika (new)

laika I highlight when I don't know the meaning of a word or an expression. I also highlight when I like something that is said by one of the characters, in other words: a quote.

message 418: by Rita (new)

Rita I read for pleasure not "work". I will rate by stars but I don't highlight or write reviews.

message 419: by John (new)

John Bonner I highlight all the time. There are several reasons to highlight.

1. A passage is particularly well written or original. I do not trust my memory to recall all of the beautiful passages in books, and it is nice to revisit them.

2. A passage is particularly thought provoking. I might want to further research a topic, or just think more deeply on a subject without stopping my progress in the book. If I do not take a note or highlight it then I will most likely not remember to do this.

3. I want to share something with my wife that I found amusing or thought provoking.

4. If there is something that I consider critical to a book, such as character descriptions, lists of societal rules, or other things that I feel that I might want to refer back to while reading, then I will highlight it to make it easier to find later. I did this with Battle Royale, highlighting the initial character descriptions since the numerous characters often had similar sounding Japanese names and were easily confused with the other over 3 dozen characters.

For me, highlighting and note taking is one of the greatest benefits of E-Readers.

message 420: by Jo (new)

Jo Beth only occasionally in a book. E reader i highlight

message 421: by Joy (new)

Joy DeKok Yes. It's taken me awhile to use this benefit. I always highlight in my print books and love being able to find my favorite lines quickly. Now that I read more on my Kindle than in print, I'm enjoying it there too.

message 422: by Edgar (new)

Edgar I always highlight that which strikes me the most

message 423: by Jyotika (new)

Jyotika Varmani I simple love the highlight feature. It is very useful. I do not use it in novel, but in my study books. It really supports my active learning.

message 424: by Shehan (new)

Shehan Whenever I come upon something really good( humor, horror, poetic description) can't resist the urge to highlight it!I read them after i've finished the book.

message 425: by Medrod (new)

Medrod There should have been two additional choices: Frequently & seldom. I frequently highlight non-fiction training and educational material but never fiction. Since most of my reading is fiction, I chose Never.

message 426: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a first generation Nook with no lighting.
I've returned to hard-copy books. Something about having a "real" book in my hands. I've ordered books on my e-reader that were incomplete or missing pictures and bad editing.
That's just my opinion. The young people of today might like them better.......not I.

message 427: by Ilham (new)

Ilham Ahed Khatib Can anyone suggest to me a good ereader that has a good price and good feature ?!! :D

message 428: by Mikayla (new)

message 431: by Tarin (new)

Tarin I highlight the passages that I want to remember

message 432: by S (new)

S Bando I have read ' fantastic 40` .author of this book is reetwika Banerjee.i think this book is a great collection of 40 micro stories .each and every story of this book knocks our emotions and tells a lot .I believe this book will be a good partner of all its readers . thank to the author for such a gift for us .

message 433: by Rakiye (new)

Rakiye Highlighting is kind of wasting time when you're reading text. Stopping and focusing on one sentence or a paragraph - whatever, you just start to think about something else- not related to text itself. In that point, maybe you think that reading these makes you have more showy and garish sentence or paragraph in your daily life, but believe me highlighting is not that perfect action except damaging your attention.

message 434: by Arin (new)

Arin Brutlag I have a Nook Color, which supports highlighting as well as notes. I usually use both when I'm reading books for class. My partner and I also vigorously note and highlight my copy of the complete Grimm's fairy tales.

message 435: by Mieke (new)

Mieke I highlight a lot! Either favourite quotes or good/bad passages, spelling mistakes, questionable passages, etc.

message 436: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Naus i just bought a kindle paper white and i bought a how-to tech kind of book, so i've been highlighting. i also am excited about reading more pleasure reading type books and highlighting them for the purpose of going back to quotes for writing reviews and various other things. also, i haven't used it yet, but i'm very stoked about the idea of being able to click on a word and get the definition (like when i'm reading a classic).

message 437: by [deleted user] (new)

I highlight to make my teacher happy! And to remember nice quotes and stuff...memorable parts or favorite lines. That stuff.

message 438: by Jashan (new)

Jashan Sehmi I highlight to express my feelings in certain lines

message 439: by Jashan (new)

Jashan Sehmi Like I read Harry potter and the deathly hallows in my kindle and in many parts i highlighted it and wrote a note saying "Yes! Yes! He finally DIED!"

message 440: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I wish there was a way to unhighlight a book where highlights are already there.

message 441: by Des (new)

Des I only highlight for book series that have not yet been completely published.

I highlight the part I believe will be important for the upcoming book so I can formulate a theory on what will happen next.

I'm weird like that.

message 442: by Nərmin (new)

Nərmin İ begin to highlight recently)) İ highlight the passages that give me information about something)) or excellent quotes)

message 443: by Ryan (new)

Ryan I highlight so the passage I liked is added to the Clippings file on my Kindle. I enjoy going back and reading all my favorite quotes from lots of books in one place!

message 444: by David (last edited Jun 23, 2015 10:32PM) (new)

David Anderson Don't own an EReader and never will. Only read real books.
I do highlight and/or underline in my books and sometimes make notes in the margins.

message 445: by Azkah (new)

Azkah Viqar I only highlight if it's an ebook and I know I can delete it later.

message 446: by Chucky_The_Squid (new)

Chucky_The_Squid I don't have an eReader... :*(

message 447: by Nastassja (new)

Nastassja Riemermann As someone who tends to highlight THE ENTIRE PAGE, ereaders are a Godsend since I can easily undo what I later decide was excess highlighting.

message 448: by Romina (new)

Romina I highlight quotes I like only!

message 449: by Erma (new)

Erma Talamante I've only started highlighting text, as a way to bookmark. I never used to, though.

message 450: by Sherin (last edited Jan 31, 2016 04:42PM) (new)

Sherin Call me silly ... but for me old school method rocks - holding a book in your hand, turning the pages, the feel and the smell and even highlighting and making notes are all important ... but I never find that connection with a eReader and stick to physical books for my references, academics and important stuff ... eBooks are more for novels or for books I can't find in bookstores ... and even then, I print out the eBooks and use them instead! I love reading and books are my friends!
