How many hours has anyone logged in at a bookstore, library so far this year? A question for another time. And yes, a feast for the eyes, the senses. I don't see how this can be replaced down the road.

I really enjoy having a Kindle so that I can buy ebooks, especially because a few years ago, I was having chemo and didn't have the energy to hold a book. Not only that, I only have so much space for books! However, having said that, I still do buy books, both paperbacks and/ or hardcover! I love being able to hold a book in my hands!! I love the printed word on the page and the feel of the paper itself.

I don't have an e-reader and wouldn't take it if it were a gift! I still love holding a book, smelling it, enjoying the tactile joy of turning pages.

I do highlight because I want to let my self be reminded of some parts of the story that I considered to be important or remarkable. It helps me with my memory retention and I am used to highlighting when I study so perhaps I do the same even on reading. :)

I like to treat my books as notebooks--I copiously underline, write in margins, highlight my heart out. There's nothing sadder-looking than a book that looks untouched, perfect in its own solace.

I highlight if I'm using the book for reference or if I spot a section I want to share with a friend, but otherwise, I don't highlight.

I don't highlight, but I agree King is worth studying and highlighting. People pick on him for his mainstream vs. high-brow literary style, but there's a reason he holds our attention-- he tells a damn good story. BTW, how do you feel about Peter Straub's writing?

Because nothing feels better than to have the universe between your hands, and a pencil !
I treat eBooks like normal books.
I treat eBooks like normal books.I do highlight remarkable quotes.
My recent highlight would be from Eleanor&Park:
"...And you make me feel like a cannibal."
I highlight when I don't know the meaning of a word or an expression. I also highlight when I like something that is said by one of the characters, in other words: a quote.

I highlight all the time. There are several reasons to highlight.
I highlight all the time. There are several reasons to highlight.1. A passage is particularly well written or original. I do not trust my memory to recall all of the beautiful passages in books, and it is nice to revisit them.
2. A passage is particularly thought provoking. I might want to further research a topic, or just think more deeply on a subject without stopping my progress in the book. If I do not take a note or highlight it then I will most likely not remember to do this.
3. I want to share something with my wife that I found amusing or thought provoking.
4. If there is something that I consider critical to a book, such as character descriptions, lists of societal rules, or other things that I feel that I might want to refer back to while reading, then I will highlight it to make it easier to find later. I did this with Battle Royale, highlighting the initial character descriptions since the numerous characters often had similar sounding Japanese names and were easily confused with the other over 3 dozen characters.
For me, highlighting and note taking is one of the greatest benefits of E-Readers.
Yes. It's taken me awhile to use this benefit. I always highlight in my print books and love being able to find my favorite lines quickly. Now that I read more on my Kindle than in print, I'm enjoying it there too.

I simple love the highlight feature. It is very useful. I do not use it in novel, but in my study books. It really supports my active learning.

Whenever I come upon something really good( humor, horror, poetic description) can't resist the urge to highlight it!I read them after i've finished the book.

There should have been two additional choices: Frequently & seldom. I frequently highlight non-fiction training and educational material but never fiction. Since most of my reading is fiction, I chose Never.

I have a first generation Nook with no lighting.
I've returned to hard-copy books. Something about having a "real" book in my hands. I've ordered books on my e-reader that were incomplete or missing pictures and bad editing.
That's just my opinion. The young people of today might like them better.......not I.

No, but I find it interesting seeing what has been highlighted.

Highlighting is kind of wasting time when you're reading text. Stopping and focusing on one sentence or a paragraph - whatever, you just start to think about something else- not related to text itself. In that point, maybe you think that reading these makes you have more showy and garish sentence or paragraph in your daily life, but believe me highlighting is not that perfect action except damaging your attention.

I have a Nook Color, which supports highlighting as well as notes. I usually use both when I'm reading books for class. My partner and I also vigorously note and highlight my copy of the complete Grimm's fairy tales.

I highlight a lot! Either favourite quotes or good/bad passages, spelling mistakes, questionable passages, etc.

i just bought a kindle paper white and i bought a how-to tech kind of book, so i've been highlighting. i also am excited about reading more pleasure reading type books and highlighting them for the purpose of going back to quotes for writing reviews and various other things. also, i haven't used it yet, but i'm very stoked about the idea of being able to click on a word and get the definition (like when i'm reading a classic).

I highlight to make my teacher happy! And to remember nice quotes and stuff...memorable parts or favorite lines. That stuff.

Like I read Harry potter and the deathly hallows in my kindle and in many parts i highlighted it and wrote a note saying "Yes! Yes! He finally DIED!"

I highlight so the passage I liked is added to the Clippings file on my Kindle. I enjoy going back and reading all my favorite quotes from lots of books in one place!

As someone who tends to highlight THE ENTIRE PAGE, ereaders are a Godsend since I can easily undo what I later decide was excess highlighting.

Call me silly ... but for me old school method rocks - holding a book in your hand, turning the pages, the feel and the smell and even highlighting and making notes are all important ... but I never find that connection with a eReader and stick to physical books for my references, academics and important stuff ... eBooks are more for novels or for books I can't find in bookstores ... and even then, I print out the eBooks and use them instead! I love reading and books are my friends!

Of course, one area that physical texts still have an advantage in is how they display illustrations and maps. Most e-books just aren't formatted correctly to allow maps to be viewed in a dynamic fashion. However, the potential exists and I'm sure this flaw too will eventually be rectified.
Don't get me wrong, I love browsing books in a library--its like an orgy for the mind! Its a tactile experience that online e-book catalogues can never quite mimic.
