I highlight quotes that I like so that I can re-read them later.

Yes, but I mostly highlight typos, with the intent of notifying someone (not that I ever do) or to mark things that I need to come back to - that prophecy that the old man says as he is dying on page 34... (or the seven people that are going to keep popping up as the story progresses.)

Rarely .. very rarely. And I definitely turn off the popular highlights, find that takes me out of the book.

I teach AP English. In the old days, my Post-It notes were always falling out of my book. They still do (LOL!), but now it doesn't matter! I highlight and take notes in the Kindle version and then stick Post-It notes with the same info in the classroom edition. When the Post-It flutters to the floor or gets lost altogether, I can easily replace it.

No highlights for me but I do underline with a pen and write notes in the margins. Love to be able to go back to a great passage with ease. Haven't figured out highlighting on kindle and don't think I will. Crazy but books I think will be of great importance to me I will continue to buy in paper.

I highlight and sometimes even note (iBooks on iPad!) certain sentences, paragraphs or quotes I want to revise or simply re-read later on.

I don't currently highlight but I just started reading the Bible on my Kindle and I imagine I'll probably start using the highlight feature a lot.

It really depends on the book! I've only started highlighting in some of the nonfiction books I've been reading lately.

I not only am the undisputed queen of highlighting, I have my Scrivener program open and am making notes at the same time. I want to be able to find key points fast without having to skim the whole book over again.

Time and technology marches on, but books, regardless of the form they take will always be in style.
I highlight and notate with my e-reader. It's still awkward though. I just like the feel of a book and a pen.

I love the highlight/clippings feature on my Kindle. As someone who loves language and words, when I find a phrase or a paragraph that strikes me, I can save it so easily, even if it is a borrowed book. I like to revisit these quotations for inspiration!

Other: I hi-light the section and post it to my Twitterers. Stanza and Kobo I know have this built-in (in some fashion) but there may be others.....Book clubbing via twitter is a great way to share experiences.

This almost needs a side poll. If I were a betting (wo)man... I would bet that for the most part the people who highlight in (paper) books, highlight in their eReaders and the people who don't, well, don't.

I use lots of post-it flags!!! And often a notebook on the side, annotations are really important to me.

I like to highlight quotes sometimes then I take pictures of the highlighted text to people who might appreciate the quotes :D

I don't highlight in ebooks, but I've never used highlighting in physical books, either. I usually just jot down notes (on paper) while I'm reading through a book.

That's one of the great thing about a Kindle. I can highlight passages, quotes and interesting thoughts of the author! However, on my paper books - I do not highlight! Sacrilege!

Yes, excessively. Words I want to look up, great prose...quotes. And, you can go back to all of your highlights whenever you like.

Highlighting lets me go back to the parts of the text that move me most, and contemplate them again and again.

I highlight three things: words I don't know the definition of (so I can go back at the end of a novel and have a study list of vocab); words I do know but never seem to use and want to; and quotes that I find shareable or want to read again (if I remember it by heart or not)

Jeremy wrote: "E-Readers are the latest yuppie fad. No thanks."Doubtful. I love books, love to be surrounded by them. Love the smell of the pages, the visual aids that it has been read (and/or loved). A book is a story containing a story. Still, I love my eReader.
No, I don't highlight. If i were to highlight, it would be disrespectful for my book. and besides i love to read my books more than once so highlighting would be just a distraction.

I used to hate beating up a book, but then I began to love it. Every mark and crease is a reminder that it has been read and enjoyed, sometimes loved (depending on how many creases/readthrews). Every coffee stain is a story of a specific time you read it (perhaps place, experience). Highlights and notes just add to the story. This I miss in my eReader...oh well, I still highlight haha.

(Well I'm not paid to advertise for Ipad)I mostly read on Ipad (full screen distraction free reading & instant free classics), highlighting is easy and much faster, and you could always locate & review them with ease.
=D
I'm not satisfied with mere reading & I couldn't do it to library books.
I consider highlighting a fun, educational part of reading the books I choose to download onto my Kindle. As a writer, the authors' techniques become tools for me to track - like verbiage and contrasts, uploaded page errors, layout, etc. I especially highlight in teaching books, ie How To ... When I read Jesus Calling every morning, I highlight and take notes as my devotion and journal time. I don't leave home without my Kindle, and my finger to highlight:)

Rarely; but I will if there's some quote or passage thats REALLY good.

I highlight WAY more than I do with real books. I love how flexible the e-reader is for reviewing all my highlights all at once, and searching for words parts of quotes that I half remember. My worst problem with highlighting is resisting the urge to highlight all of a very well written book!

...I'll ALWAYS highlight if it's a book that I'm garnering info from- I want to be able to go back to it at a later date and get just the pertinent facts. I'll also make margin notes in pencil at times. But any book that I'm reading for pure pleasure remains "unmolested"!

I highlight a lot in general and e-readers are no exception but it's definitely not as satisfying as a ink and paper book so I've decided that I'll only read light, fun novels that I most likely won't want to lend out to friends on the Kindle.

My friend has an EReader and she makes me highlight things I like on her books, but I do prefer the real book, and I do highlight every now and then.

I highlight all the freaking time. I also take notes. I have never once gone back to see what I highlighted or noted - that would probably be an adventure!

In books I read for my book club, I highlight passages I want to discuss. In a physical book, I would mark those with a post-it tab or something, so as to keep it clean!

I love highlighting, because it makes me able to go back and reflect on parts of the book, remind me why I liked it so much, and helps me with growing as an author myself! Plus, not to mention, I love quoting things! :3

I highlight when important characters/dates/events are introduced in history books so that I can search through my highlights and quickly find stuff.

I don't highlight in the books I read - In my bible I highlight and put dates so that I can go back and look up things that really touched me.
