I treat reading as a task, and as such, that places it within the remit of research. So yes, I highlight a lot, with notes explaining why.

I only highlight in my bible...not in my enjoyment reading! :) Unless there is something truly profound!

I haven't read any novels on my Nook or Kindle app yet. They've all been tech pdfs. But I use a pencil to bracket or underline in my regular books and then put the page number in the back of the book.

The nook allows you to create bookmarks but i'm not sure if there is a limit.
I was on the fence about whether to vote yes or no. On the one hand, I wouldn't say I "like" to highlight; I don't do it often. But on occasion, I will highlight a great quote, or if I'm proofreading a manuscript, I highlight errors.

As a quote collector who reads mostly at night in bed, where a book and a pen is just not practical, the Kindle highlight feature has been a life saver :)

I do highlight and make notes sometimes (they should have had a 'sometimes' answer as an option) but it's usually to remember important characters or situations throughout the book. If a book has too many characters, they are hard to keep up with so I use the highlight feature so that I can refer back to see who they are and their significance in the book if their name happens to come up again later on! I hate that feeling of "wait, who is that again?" and having to try to find where I read about them earlier.

I used to do it to correct grammar/spelling errors but there were always too many and I couldn't keep up!

Why ask only e-readers users? You can highlight a paper book too! And my answer is: no, I don't do it.

I highlight occasionally but I wouldn't say "I like to highlight". It is mostly just in an anthology, especially where I'm skipping around, to mark titles.

I highlight, because I usually make the notes and the marks in the book to help with my writing of the review :)

I highlight only for writing notes and feelings as I am reading the ebook upload it on my progress on goodreads and eventually delete the book out of my ereader

I chose "other" because while I do highlight passages that I want to remember if I write a review, I can't really say I "like" to highlight. It's just one of the benefits of using an ereader, but I could live without it.

I only highlight by accident - then I can't figure out how to remove the highlighting so in it stays!

If I did have an Ereader/If I wanted to have an Ereader Than yes I would Highlight favorite passages. (But there is no answer for that so I was torn between "I don't have one" and "other" go figure)

Belong to two book clubs, and when I have to lead the discussion of the book, I need to highlight e-books, as well as regular books.

I highlight all my favorite passages when I read them, because if I don't then I forget where they are and my kindle makes it so easy for me to find all my highlights in a book!!! For example when I just read Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini I ended up with 44 highlights! I hate putting any markings in my print books, so when I read a print copy I really end up missing my highlight feature a lot.

I don't exactly have an e reader but can read e books through amazon cloud which offers highlighting. When I am reading some books with it I highlight some amazing passage I want to remember, and I love how I can find it again. That said, I still prefer physical books.

I makes it more time-efficient. I can more quickly return to what was important or to an exceptionally beautiful or inspiring passage that I want to re-read later.

I can't imagine not highlighting, ebook or physical copy. (Yes, my books will never be good on the resale market -- unless I become famous, which isn't going to happen! :D )

I highlight the quotes that I like. Sometimes, I include some thoughts regarding this quote.

I don't want to ruin the beautiful pages with my dirty handwriting. :( Sometimes, I use sticky notes but most of the time I just keep it to myself. A bad habit, I know.
I sometimes highlight especially for book club. If it's something I want to discuss, I will highlight it.

I only highlight passages that stand out to me. The ones that make me stop and read them again, and that I'd like to share with others or to remember where they are when I want to experience them again.

I also enjoy looking at Popular Highlights to see what other readers highlight.
I also enjoy looking at Popular Highlights to see what other readers highlight. However, here is a question for others: I am having continual problems with my Kindle freezing up for 30 seconds to a minute when I highlight or make marginal notes. It does not do it ALL the time but at least half the time. Amazon does not seem to know what is wrong. Does anyone else have this problem?
If there is a passage that is absolutely ridiculous, or hilarious and I want to show it to someone, yeah. So far I've only highlighted two things though.

Nope - unless it's for work/research, I don't highlight. And if I do, it's in the fluorescent yellow highlighter ONLY.

Angie, I have the same problem. It doesn't do it all the time, just once in awhile.
I love to highlight on my kindle; then I can share it on facebook. also I love to use it to remember passages from the book!!!

I never did this with real books, but I'm somewhat addicted to it with my kindle.
I never did this with real books, but I'm somewhat addicted to it with my kindle.I like going back and reading over my highlights later - it brings me back to the mindset I had while first reading the passages I thought were important for one reason or another.
Popular highlights are also awesome, and I'm always disappointed when a book isn't notable to have them. (Which is often, with what I read.)
E-Readers are the latest yuppie fad. No thanks.

Sometimes the thing that pushes me over the edge into buying a book instead of just enjoying the sample as far as it takes me is the COMPULSION to highlight (only functions on bought books, not samples).

I do highlight, but usually I highlight the typos. :D

No, I write it down in my little reporter Moleskine, writing something down makes it easier to remember, otherwise there is very little contact with the fascinating through/part other than reading it and marking it with my finger.

I never highlight with the exception of Stephen King books. Whenever he makes one of those foreshadowing statements he's so fond of (e.g., he never saw her again) I have to highlight it for tracking purposes ;)
