Let's just get it out in the open from the get-go, David Eddings is my hero! I've never felt the way I do when I read his books (and I read them over and over and over again) The Belgariad is his best work too and Pawn of Prophecy kicks it off spectacularly. I read this for the first time about 20 years ago and it still remains one of my favourite books and series. This is classic high fantasy that demonstrates so many of the popular tropes: the chosen one, the quest, the found family; but brings them together in a way that is so much fun. I followed these characters through this series and the Books of the Mallorean plus the prequels and spin-offs and I love them to this day.
