Though a science fiction novel, The Gods Themselves is also primarily about magic.

Throughout the courses I took for my my undergraduate degree in Economics, we talked a lot about the driving forces behind the choices people make. One of the greatest is magic. We all want to find that magical thing that makes us not have to work as hard; magic makes life easier.

In the not-too-distant future, scientists stumble upon a way to draw an unlimited, safe, and abundant supply of energy from a parallel universe, with help from the alien "para-men". However, over time a couple of outcast scientists discover that there is a price to play for this: drawing energy from the parallel universe is altering the laws of physics in our universe -- which will then in turn lead to the explosion of the sun and destruction of the earth...
