The late Terry Pratchett co-authored a series, The Long Earth, with Baxter. Not exactly hi-tech, since you could buy the parts at Radio Shack (ha! A 3-year-old book that's already dated with obsolete cultural references!) An apparently infinite number of alternate worlds (none very similar to our own). It's not Pratchett's signature humorous style, and I wasn't all tht thrilled with the story, but it was Goodreads Reader's Choice winner for SciFi in 2012, so I guess I'm in a minority. Baxter is continuing the series w/o Sir Terry, because Baxter.

Among the Big Three, Asimov played with alternate universes with The Gods Themselves, with an alien invasion from an alternate universe.
Heinlein's The Cat Who Walks Through Walls is sort of Heinlein's homage to Heinlein, featuring a multiverse populated by other Heinlein novels :)
