Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series continues to be laced with unleashed emotions, deep passions, fantastic characters a rich universe of competing races and a great story arc that has lasted over many books. Reading 'Shield of Winter' without having read the preceding twelve books (starting with Slave to Sensation) leaves the reader at a severe disadvantage of not fully grasping the laws of the universe, key character info from the protagonists of the previous books and the interplay and histo ...more

Initial Thoughts: OK, this one did not grab me like the other books in the Psy Changeling series did. I did skip a few books in the series and personally, it didn't make a difference to me. This book took me a long time to read. Parts of it were excruciatingly slow. My personal preference in this series is to see Psy characters with Changelings as Psy/Psy couples seem a little robotic for my tastes. The book did pick up toward the end because Ms. Singh writes very steamy sex scenes.

Silence is continuing to fall and the Es hold the key to the Psy race salvation.

Aden enlists the Arrows to keep them safe and to help them find out how they work. After a century of near extermination, its a wonder any of them survive at all.

Vasic is teamed up with Ivy Jane and together they rewrite the Psy race charter.

And I loved little Rabbit. What a cute fluffy dog I kept picturing in my head as I read the story.

While this book is about Ivy and Vasic, it is also about the aftermath of Silence. There are repercussions from Silence's fall and people are dying. There was a big learning about regarding the empaths and what they can do.

I did enjoy reading about the Arrows and how they are choosing their jobs and what they do (and I'm excited for Aden's book). This is a Psy-Psy pairing (as is the next book) and there are some Changeling bits in this one, but not much. Overall this is much more serious in tone

Ivy and Vasic

Through all the previous 12 Psy-Changeling books I've loved the Changelings but with Shield of Winter Ms Singh has shown that the Psy, minus Silence, can be just as loved.

Ivy taught Vasic he could feel, that he could love without splintering from breaking Silence. All that while the two of them saved the Psy world!

Vasic is an arrow, cold as ice and deadly. Ivy is an empath, just coming to terms and learning how to use and control them.

Put this empath with this arrow and sparks fly. The way the fell for each other was so effortless. You would think that it would have been harder, but Vasic actually didn't stand a chance in the face of Ivy.

The worldbuilding is as amazing as ever, and if you thought things would automatically be better once silence fell, you were DEAD wrong.

As always, you get to still "see"
