This book was not what I expected. I picked it up at the library because of the cover and the concept of mixing letters, photographs and the story intrigued me. Still, I had no idea how much I would enjoy the world Riggs creates or how deeply I would feel for the main character. The story is unique and captivating and as the mystery unfolds, readers are swept up in a completely different world full of interesting secondary characters, whom I liked immensely. I try to go into reading a book without any preconceived notions and a neutral opinion, even if someone I know has said that they loved or hated a book because everyone has different tastes.
I'm glad I didn't know much about 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' when I started reading it, and especially glad that I hadn't read all of the bad reviews. I may have missed out on a really intriguing story.

The author took some old photos and thought of a story to wind them together. It hangs nicely off the illustrations, which are liberally spattered through the book, but has a life of its own, too. It reminds me of Catherine Sefton or Carrie's War, somehow, while still feeling very fresh. There are monsters, there is intrigue, there is satisfaction. I enjoyed.
