970 Even as a kid I always wanted to go to Russia. But in the 80s that was a slim possibility. And too bad I didn't go when I could... cuz right now might not be so good a time either.

970 This book definitely had a lot of musical references. Music was very important throughout. Perhaps one of the reasons that the band chose the name. I also thought that it had a very late-60s type of psychedelicness to it that would have been attractive to them at the time.

Ironically, though, Steppenwolf (the character) would have hated Steppenwolf (the band).

H - Harry Haller - 1/27/22
970 Steppenwolf mentions a few actual compositions. I will be going with Mozart's The Magic Flute.

970 Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. A bizarre but interesting short book.

970 I finished Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. I liked it much more than I thought I would. I think I could relate to JIm.

970 I'm starting The Count of Monte Cristo. It'll be my 3rd read... but I want to do it along with the group.
970 Here's a link to the book on Project Gutenberg:

970 Finished The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler. Reportedly he claims it's his favorite book. I'd have to say it was my least favorite of the three on the LIST. But still good.

Welcome Lew. If you want to make a good dent in the LIST, you will get plenty of philosophy... and will expand into some historical fiction. There's a few non-fiction on the list, but not a ton.

Glad to have you here and look forward to seeing what you are reading. Be sure to check out our group reads as well.

So basically you will be done on Thursday?
