970 I finished The Third Wedding by Costas Taktsis, which I enjoyed. This Greek family drama was not about a wedding, however....
970 Also, I wanted to mention how different everybody is from the first part when we are in Peace to the second part when we are in War.

I especially noticed this with Andrei. He seems like a totally different character in the two different aspects. Anybody else feel this way?
970 First line in the Garnett translation:

Well, Prince, Genoa and Lucca are now no more than private estates of the Bonaparte Family.

970 Thanks for getting all this started Karen. I was a little out of service recently.

If you want to add Constance Garnett (Translation Date-1904) to the list, it follows the same format as the Maude translation except that "books" are referred to as "parts" Parts and chapters only. No mention of books or volumes.

That's the one I'm reading.

970 Finally starting Mr. Vertigo and War and Peace. June was chaos around here. Playing catch up now.
970 Discussion post open.
970 Discussion thread opened. Use this thread to talk about the end of the book. Use the General Discussion to talk about the book as a complete work. Please try to hide your spoilers. And realize that the end of the book is going to be pretty inherently spoileristic. Read this thread with caution.

970 Here is the schedule for War and Peace. I have yet to take the time to link to Project Gutenberg. Does anybody find that helpful? I will do it only if I get some feedback that it's worth doing.

July - Books 1 - 3
August - Books 4 - 6
September - Books 7 - 9
October - Books 10 & 11
November - Books 12 - 14
December - Book 15 and both Epilogues
970 Sorry for the delay, folks.

The discussion thread is open. The group read widget on the home page is up to date.

970 Like Life by Lorrie Moore. It took me some time to decide I liked it. I liked the way the stories were only kinda linked together.

Also finished, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. This had some moments of amazingness. Fun and strange at the same time.

970 Head on over to the polls to vote.

I selected the books that received at least two votes in the last poll. Just like last time, feel free to write in a book. Write-ins performed pretty well last time. Big books or difficult books.

970 The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. After I stopped looking for a plot I enjoyed this book.

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. This one really had a Borges feel to it. Short, strange sections. But ultimately satisfying.

970 The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald. Another study on places Sebald has gone. This time with a bit more attention paid to the people. Kinda boring.

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. One part Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, one part Dan Brown (I realize this predated Dan Brown, put down the stones) and one part Jules Verne. One of my favorite list books to date.
970 Time to discuss!
