My favorite read of the year so far is Shantaram. It's a book that has been around for awhile but I only just discovered it. I'm pretty sure it has to be read in audio to be fully appreciated. Like Diana's books, it is epic in size and scope. It will appeal most to those who like the Outlander series for the adventure aspect as there is very little romance and no time travel. The author, Gregory David Roberts, is finally coming out with a sequel in October this year.

I'm currently reading These Is My Words and I am finding parallels with Outlander.....historical saga, adventure & romance. Apparently it's also a trilogy so I'll have more to look forward to. This is not a new series so many of you may have already read it. I'm usually late to the party.

OK, well for the record Davina Porter pronounces it Lira....like the Italian money.

Why do you all call her Leghair? Is this a joke?

Good review, however, it fails to speak to the point that the reason Jamie spanks Claire is because she endangered the lives of all the men, which is something we Outlander fans have debated ad nauseum, and which many believe elevates Jamie above the men of his time (i.e. common wifebeaters).

I was interested to watch how they handled the spanking...I think they did a good job.

Has anyone read the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman that Diana claims as a favorite? I just ordered the first in the series The Wine of Angels to see if it speaks to me.

That is one of the advantages to the audios...I couldn't for the the life of me figure out how to pronounce Laoghaire until I heard Davina Porter do it.

It's been so long since I've read the book I have forgotten many of these details. However, in the screen version, I thought it was apparent that the "first time" was not for Claire. Jamie is a young virgin and I would not have expected the sex to last very long. So when she says she did like it, I was a bit disbelieving. I agree that adding the line where Claire says that most women like it as slowly as possible would have set the stage for their later lovemaking scenes. I thought the scene where Claire gives Jamie oral sex was exquisite....Sam's facial expressions....well, he proved himself a fine actor.

Wow...very impressively well done. I don't remember Dougal being after Claire so unrelentingly in the book...was he?

The reason I think Claire was genuinely believing what BJR was telling her is because she dropped her guard enough to be totally shocked when he punched her in the stomach. She never saw it coming and if she had been wary of him, she would have.

You make some good points but where I don't agree with you is that Claire could not have sympathy knowing what she knows about BJR. Remember at this point, she is not that invested in Jamie...she likes him yes, but her husband is Frank and when she looks at BJR she is staring him in the face. I can see where she would let her guard down and have sympathy for him, even with what has already transpired.

I had to look away during the flogging....too much blood. I can't even watch my own blood being taken, I'm such a wuss.
It must have been hard for Claire to separate her loathing for BJR from her love for Frank after the way BJR mistreated her. Hard to understand what that would have been like to be staring "your husband" in the face and it not being him at all.

I nearly passed out from the blood.....ewwwwwww.

It drives me crazy that there aren't subtitles for the Gaelic bits.

Oh I don't think we're worried about whether men will like it or not.....just curious. It seems the novels have so much that would appeal to men and yet most of Diana's readers are women.

An actress who is 5'6" and 136 lbs is not short and chubby but she would look it on camera and I don't think any of us would be happy with that. I think we all would agree that in our minds, Claire is beautiful.
I googled Hayley Atwell and while she is 5'7", she's only 112 lbs.

9 stone is 136 lbs, which I'm sure Caitriona doesn't weight that but still, surely we are all capable of using our well developed imaginations! I googled her and she's 5'10" and 121 lbs but let's face it ladies, short, chubby women are usually not actresses.
