The Count is on my list of the top 10 best books I have ever read. May I suggest the Penguin Classics edition. It is by far the best translation out there.

For my choices I am considering:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Mrs. Dalloway
A Passage to India
Beloved
of course I could always finish Wuthering Heights, which I tried to read a few years ago. We'll see.

I have to admit, I had to look up the definition of canon as I was curious what exactly would be considered as such. The Oxford Dictionary online site defines Canon (in a bookish sense) as:
A collection or list of sacred books accepted as genuine.
In addition, the sub definitions are :
a. The works of a particular author or artist that are recognized as genuine
b. The list of works considered to be permanently established as being of the highest quality.
From looking at the GR shelf, I think that 2b is the definition that fits the most. At any rate, take a gander at the list and see what strikes your fancy.

Welcome to the group. Roxanne. Our head mod, Tien, is brilliant at coming up with games to play to help us choose what books to read next. In the past we have done Scattergories, Twister, Bingo, and several others. For 2018, our main game is Wheel of Books. The general instructions can be found in the general instrucions thread. And many of your questions may be answered in that thread.
Remember, though, all games and challenges are strictly voluntary, but they are a lot of fun, so we look forward to having you participate.
If you have other questions that you need answered, feel free to post a question in that thread, or PM me or one of the other mods

Same here, Bea . I'm hoping to start one of them soon.

yep. I keep whining to my husband that 11,000+ pages is impossible - and he keeps pointing out that by ..."
I agree with the "by the math" comment. If you think about it, we are all reading the same percentage of our normal. in fact, I would bet that my measly 2500 pages is probably harder for me to complete than the higher number of pages that you power readers do. Both Dee and Tien know that I am always in awe of the number of books they read. Although, the more books you have to read, the harder they are to fit into other challenges, I guess. Good luck to us all

What a great time to get bankrupt!

3. Did you do the Goodreads reading challenge for 2017 and if so, how close did you come to your goal?

Let's start the year out right by posting about the books from the Read in 2017 shelf.

They are great, aren't they. Tien is the most creative, and yet diabolical, challenge creator I know!

I always love hearing that the books on my list were good reads for others. It makes me look forward to them even more. I have been letting the Patterson and Davidson series languish for too long, and have been anticipating His Majesties Dragon for a long time.

You have some great books on your list, Charlene. I highly recommend Helter Skelter and Never Let Me Go. Sophie's Choice is good, also.
