I may be in a slump, I'm not entirely sure π but I'm not that engrossed in this story.

Hope you feel better!

Just random... I did not know Spensa had a last name, I mean I guess everyone has one, but I didn't know it was Nightshade. If it was mentioned in Skyward I had forgotten it.

I stated it the day before yesterday, but only read the prologue and the first chapter

How did you guys feel about this story?
It annoyed me so much, well Jack did. Comparing his mother with the giantess, because she wanted help from him around the house, and for him to work so that they have something to eat.
Hansel and Gretel
So far this is my favorite retelling.

I suspected D.J. too π and was "is this where he betrays them?" on several occasions.
The narration was a bit bland, which made it a tad less enjoyable. But I was intrigued with the alien/parasite. I can see that it was too much since we already had a pandemic.. and now that I finished I see that none of it was nicely tied at the end and it annoys me.
On one hand it can be a "to be seen" kind of scenario, but still it was lacking things. Okay, we have a government made creature and we have the military that can't give classified information to the public but we didn't get much on it. What about the militia? They had some plan, they were doing something, but we didn't find anything more about it. I just feel like the book should've been a bit longer, or if it had been written with a bit more information, a bit more developed from the beginning.

Firstly, I want to say I love Red's brain. Knowing random shit is so cool, and I wish I had a vast interest in things and good memory to actually remember said things.
Second, I love how it's presenting at least a part of today's situation.

Awwww, a slug learned Jorgen's name.
Is this referencing to Lord of the rings? ππ€£
One of your ancient writers even preserved bits of our language, so that when we began to travel across the universe, some of your people could speak to mine.β Iβd never read the book, though now I wished I had. There were still a few copies on ReDawn. Something about a ring.
I finished chapter 14. I agree, it's interesting to read it from Alanik's perspective and to see a bit of her world and culture.

Snow White. Wooho, I remembered something.. from somewhere. However, I did not know about the bodice. If you keep reading the originals after these stories and there some interesting things feel free to tell us, I would like to know. I don't know if I'll ever pick the original tales but this may give me a tad more interest in it.

I like the writing a lot, it's simple but at the same time it's not ? I don't know how to explain it, it just doesn't feel like other middle grade things I've read.
Red Riding Hood Liked that it was a "every year" sacrifice of beautiful girls, and that in the end Red made a sanctuary for girls the villagers were gladly sacrificing even though they didn't know what would happen if they refused.
Snow white This one definitely is with a twist to the original, although every story here is, and I like that there's a black Snow White. Does anyone know if the poison comb was part of like the original story? It feels kinda familiar, but at the same time I'm not sure I've heard it.
Sleeping beauty A vampiric prince for a male sleeping beauty? I don't know.. I'm kinda confused by the blood thing going on, but all for the male beauty.
Rapunzel From all riches freedom is the most valuable. I also like how she was "to be your wife? yeah, no thanks" π
I like how in the end she only wanted to dance in the rain. Parental love can be too tight, while only wanting to do the best it can "cripple" the child for some useful in life skills.
To those that finished the book, what was your favorite story?
