Thank you, Kitty; two quite different books! Another great Christmas book is The Thirteen Days Of Christmas, telling the (imagined) story behind the Christmas song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Lovely, Iram! It's great for music and D&T in KS1 too; designing and making instruments for sound effects to play along with the text.

I agree. I think that there is often a worry about upsetting children with books with challenging content, but many children do face difficult circumstances (divorce, long term illness, bereavement etc) and I think that encountering issues in books can help children feel that they're not alone.

Thanks, Lucia and Emma. I'm glad that you've found an Anancy story, Lucia. It's really important that young children see themselves and their culture reflected in the classroom, and for children to learn to respect other children's heritage and culture. Anancy and Mr. Dry-Bone is another great Anancy story often read in KS1 classrooms.

Please could you post the link to your review (not the book) Yasmin? Matilda has been reviewed by so many people that I can't locate your review. Have a look at the guide on UEL Plus if you're confused.

Great reviews, Sam, thanks! I love the Berlie Doherty book. She has gone back to different versions of the stories- the German version of Cinderella (Aschenputtel) doesn't have the fairy godmother, while the French version (Cendrillon) does.
