50x66 Wow, you've been busy, Matt! We're Going On A Bear-Hunt is a traditional rhyme. It can be effective in Foundation Stage classrooms for drama and music (instruments or shakers making the noises) and for Knowledge About The World- children could make a map of the journey, with the geographical features.

Isn't there a guide on the Induction wiki?

50x66 Thanks Robert. That's a great review of a very interesting book. Other books that cover death are Goodbye Mog, Badger's Parting Gifts, The Heart and the Bottle and the fantastic Michael Rosen's Sad Book. I think it is important that children's books do talk about death; I have had at least one child being affected by death (of a relative, pet or in one case, a teacher) every year of my career.

50x66 Great reviews, Claire and Sarah. Twelve Minutes to Midnight reminds me a lot of the Sally Lockhart books, Claire.

50x66 There are some great leaflets and lists of picture books for children from Foundation Stage to KS4 here on the Booktrust website: http://www.booktrust.org.uk/professio...

50x66 Thank you, Jamila and Emma. Elmer is a great favourite in EYFS, and I've used it many times to teach colour names to children in the early stages of learning English. I'm a little ambivalent about Rainbow Fish, Jamila- I think the illustrations are beautiful, but it saddens me that in order to become less arrogant, Rainbow Fish has to become more ordinary. However, may people disagree with me!

There is a children's literature task on the PGCE, linked to your school placements and to self study. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

50x66 Thanks Monserrat! Rhythm, rhyme and repeated refrains are great for young children, as they encourage participation and sound discrimination- the early stages of phonics.

Great review, thank you! I often recommend
Anne Fine to readers who like Jacqueline Wilson; would you agree?

Thanks Alexander! That's a great book. Have you read There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom? A couple of trainees used it last year with Y6 to discuss issues to do with bullying and preparing children for the transition for secondary school.

Welcome, Kawsor! Anansi is a great character. Traditional tales are a big feature of literacy teaching, and it is good to have stories from around the world, not just from Europe.
