{Yeah, Jink's a panther. Sorry, I forgot that you might not have read the character topic yet. :()}Jink's eyes widened. English... this creature knew English! Max had taught him some English using hypnosis, but he could only understand other people's English. He could not speak it. His vocalization would not allow him to do so. He wished so much he could reply to the creature. Instead, he shook his raven black head and then lifted his ear, hoping that it would understand that he could listen but not talk.
{Sorry! Here I am!}Jink gazed at the creature with caution. It appeared to have a torn wing, but it could still attack him. It looked very strong and powerful. And it smelled of... the unknown... of secrets.
He approached it with caution. He did not know how to communicate with it, but he would try to be friendly. He pulled in his claws and closed his mouth, hiding his sharp, white teeth. But he still kept his eyes locked with the creature's, ready to defend himself if necessary.
Max raised an eyebrow. They seemed to be deep in conversation, and had not heard him. He turned away and went back to his shelf.
Violet waved goodbye and left the store. Max turned back to the shelf he had been attempting to organize. He saw a girl he had seen in town before talking with a little kid by a shelf towards the back. He walked over to them."Can I help you two with something," he asked. The little girl looked up at him , her eyes wide. She seemed quite skiddish.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," Max replied. "I know what its like, being alone." He paused, thinking of his parents, then of his first few days free from his horrid aunt and uncle. He had lived in the forest, practicing his newfound talent of hypnotism. Alone, until he found Jink."It was very nice meeting you, Violet," he said shaking her hand. "I hope we can talk again sometime."
"Oh," mumbled Max. "I'm very sorry to hear that" His eyes fought back tears. "My parents died when I was eight." He had many memories of them, and he had loved them dearly. It was strange how well he could relate to this girl.
Jink prowled the forest, hunting for his breakfast. He did prefer to hunt at night, when his raven black furwas like a cloak of invisibility in the darkness, but he had wanted to stay with Max in his mind-consuming agony the night before.Jink also usually just ate raw meat that Max got in the Town Center, so as to not destroy the forest's ecosystem. But every once in a while, he needed to actually hunt for food. It was only natural.
Jink made due with the shade and slinked through the forest, sniffing the air. He smelled squirrels, assorted birds, some deer, and... an very strange animal. He could not identify the scent. It was incomparable to any animal he knew of. Curious, he followed the smell for a while.
Soon, he found that the scent ended near a tall tree. But it was the strongest it had been the whole way. Whatever it is is in this tree, Jink thought. And he slowly lifted his head up, to find himself looking into the eyes of none other than Zoe.
Webbed toes and fi ngers, transparent skin, and gills- yeah, that's extremely boring," Max said, sarcastically. "And telekinetic? Did you say your dad could talk to plants?" He was now very intrigued with this girl. Max was familiar with the workings of the mind, of course, but he had never met someone who was even a little aquainted with it. Also, he had once tried to hypnotise a flower, to reach into its mind and read its fragile thoughts. He had failed, however, and he was amazed to see that someone had donethis seemingly impossible task."I would love to meet him," he said to Violet. Then, in a cautious voice, he added, "Um, I'm a hypnotist. It would be interesting to meet someone who understands the mind as I do." He wondered if she would be afraid. He had learned in the manyplaces he had lived that he could be... intimidating to people, especially when Jink was with him. Jink was currentlyin the forest, hunting, but Max had just told Violet that he could manipulate people's minds. He wondered why this had not worried him when he told Bella.
"You are quite magical, yourself," Max continued to Violet. "I suppose you are a very good swimmer!"
{OMG! I love the way you guys think :) Sorry I was gone for soooo long! My mom dragged me off to our swim club and we ended up staying FOREVER!!! :()}
Max furrowed his brow. This girl sure was straightforward. "Okay then, he said. "Yes, I am." He turned back around and began to walk away, hoping that could be the end of it. No one would believe her, anyway.
Max was surprized. Who was this girl really? Did she... know... or was she just joking around? She sure SEEMED serious.He raised his eyebrow. "I think the question is- are YOU magical?" He wasn't sure if he could trust this girl.
{HI, ZOE!!! I'm Mel! :)}
"Who's asking," Max called, appearing from behind a cluttered shelf. "Oh, hello again, Violet. Can I help YOU with something now?"
It was a dull, quiet day at the trinket shop. It was a cluttered little shop, but cosy, and filled with everything from jewlry, to old brass spyglasses. There were pocket compasses, bags of colorful marbles, rusty skeleton keys, and even books. {My dream store!!! :)} Max loved working there, and he needed to especially today, to distract him from forbidden thoughts. He walked down the carpeted isles of shelves, putting things that had fallen back in their places.Suddenly, he came across a beautiful pendant. It was a hypnotic swirl. It looked black and white at first, but then Max saw that when it hit the sunlight, the whitep part of the swirl shimmered brightly and seemed to contain every color imaginable all at once. It was an amazing. The white swirl reminded him so much of Bella's brilliant eyes. And of his hypnotic gift... Yes, maybe it was a gift after all... It was the reason he had met Bella. He bought the pendant immediately and found a silver chain to go with it. He would give this to Bella as a present. He smiled as wide as he had since he had been with her the day before, when he had been too clouded with love to think of Owen.
"Thank you, Violet," Max said. He handed her some coins. She nodded, counting the money, and left the table. He took a sip of his tea, breathing in the foggy steam. He closed his eyes... That was a big mistake. Bella was there again. Her piercing, beautiful eyes looked at him, innocently It was the look she had given him after she had kissed him. It had been meant as nothing but a thank you. Max's heart filled with longing. He ached for her to feel as he did. He longed for a real kiss from her... He was being selfish. He wanted her to love him... But Owen... Did Bella truly love Owen? Of course she does, Max thought to himself. Why else would they be engaged? And yet... how he wished it were different...He was ashamed of his thoughts, but he could not help himself. He finished his tea, trying to silence them, but in vain. He looked at his watch, seeing that his hour was up. He left a tip on the table and strode out the door, hurrying into the trinket shop across the street.
