4170 Stephen King and the DOJ battle Random Penguins invading Simon & Schuster

With Amazon looming menacingly over the book industry, PenguinRandom acquired Simon & Schuster, but the Department of Justice is taking them to court on August 1. The DOJ couldn't stop the last big media merger, AT&T and Time Warner, so the Big Five publishers may become the Really Big One Plus Three Less Big publishers.

4170 Cory Doctorow explains "Why none of my books are available on Audible"

https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/25/ca...

While making it so easy to consume audiobooks, Amazon seems to have descended into some questionable business practices. Scary stuff.
4170 If London architecture, Metropolitan Police procedures, Roman history, British cuisine, and Newtonian magic aren't your thing, you can read up on the history of London rivers instead.

The Lost Rivers of London by Nicholas Barton
4170 Ruh roh. I guess there was a third silhouette cover for Whispers Under Ground. I don't recall seeing this edition.

which eventually got the UK cover here in the US.

4170 Later US printings of Midnight Riot and Moon Over Soho used cover art like the original UK covers. I think subsequent books in the series used the same cover art for US and UK editions.

4170 And Moon Over Soho audio cover art for the sake of completeness, including hair (maybe) and gun.

4170 Cover art for one of the audio editions has hair and a more prominent hand gun!

4170 Back when the book was first published in the US, there was some discussion about the cover design. The mass market paperback published in the US had a large bald man in silhouette.

The US cover of the second book in the series, Moon Over Soho, used a similar silhouette.

However, some of the cover photos used for marketing before the books were published clearly showed a large bald black man instead of a silhouette.

In the book, Peter Grant has short hair and he describes himself as somewhere between IC3 and IC6, British police communication codes for Black (IC3) and Arab or North African (IC6).

Was Constable Grant white-washed (or silhouette-washed)? I dunno. Book covers are weird.
