I am also wondering who the heck is Luke. The different POVs, in the present and past, are helping to give me background and flesh the story out a bit. I usually don’t enjoy heartbreaking stories like this, but I’ll stick it out to finish the buddy read.

This is a difficult book to read. Chapter 11-20. (view spoiler)[ Their time with the religious sect was terrible! I knew Robert would sexually abuse Annie eventually. It’s heartbreaking how he broke her spirit. Annie leaving her home finally at age 14 before she got pregnant was smart and brave. I do find it hard to believe her mother did not know about the abuse. It happening almost every night. So glad both girls got out. But obviously not without scars.

I actually agree with Lexi that a baby should have a proper name. Only celebrities can get away with naming their children Moonbeam and Apple! (hide spoiler)]

This is an emotional roller coaster! But opioid addiction is a timely subject matter right now.

Chapter 1-10 (view spoiler)[ It breaks my heart that Annie’s baby will have to go through withdrawal. Annie was naive thinking she could use drugs and then just go cold turkey. She is worried about losing her baby. Sometimes I do think that is the better solution. Being raised by an addict can be a terrible life for a child.

I am finding the characters a bit one dimensional. This isn’t my usual type of book. But I am curious about Robert and his very restrictive religious sect. (hide spoiler)]

We know more about Mab. (view spoiler)[ So Mab was angry that Gin’s mother married the man Mab wanted to pass stone magic onto her children. I was surprised Gin was the real target, but Mab got confused and thought it was Bria. Still so many questions for me. How did Mab get confused? Mab doesn’t seem like the one to make a mistake like that. (hide spoiler)]

Good point about Bria. (view spoiler)[ Her family’s death probably did motivate her to become a cop. I missed the part about the rune necklace. And yeah, she needs to protect herself better from Mab! For law enforcement, her investigation into Mab was sloppy, if Mab found out about it. (hide spoiler)]

Wow, that was suspenseful (view spoiler)[ when Rosalyn told Slater to never touch her again. And Mab had to step in. This situation is so tense now. Gin will take care of this, I have no doubt. But Slater has to be so angry right now! (hide spoiler)]

Bria (view spoiler)[ Does she realize she has power like Gin? Did she feel it too when Gin and Bria touched? I think Bria will be more accepting of Gin’s past than Donovan. Yes, she is a cop, but she has power of her own. And Gin has become more of a vigilante. Getting justice for others. (hide spoiler)]

Owen (view spoiler)[ I am liking the attraction between these 2 too. I like that they have a past. Gin helped him and his sister when they had nothing. And he has elemental stone power like Gin. They could be even better together than Gin and Donovan. (hide spoiler)]

I didn’t like the ending. I also did not think Roz deserved a HEA. There seems to be a trend in mystery thrillers where most of the characters are so unlikeable. I definitely don’t like it!
