That's too bad LaLine - I've read a bunch of "slog" books lately, especially ones that you want to like but it just never seems to gel. At least it isn't a 600 page book. :D

35559 Post Modern is described as 1973 to present so I'm going to be lazy and use the book I just finished so I don't have to bother putting all the info into goalless books. :) My book takes place in 1999 so it fits (and doesn't have much other possible info, so...).

NEW GOAL -- Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as english - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable.
Used The Janus Stone (Ruth Galloway, #2) by Elly Griffiths

NEW GOAL -- Read a book that has the birthstone Peridot in the text or title.

Drat I used my peridot book for the picnic - time to search for another one.

Nope nothing.

35559 I should be able to find a briefcase - I'll check the John Grisham books when I stop by the library tonight. :D

I have nothing for religious and nothing for beach Christmas - I do want to read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens which is on the first list of Christmas songs.

35559 Snow, we finally have snow. It's supposed to get super cold tomorrow night and then maybe we'll have ice too. About time!

Finished one book today, one more I have to read for a library return and then I will get my "started with one" book done. :D

35559 I think it will work, they use the word wagering quite a bit which is the same. I'll add the goal now.

35559 I was just looking through the goalless books and I realized I might have a book for gambling. In Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo Jesper is always "playing" or "wagering" at the Crow Club. They never call it gambling but it's the same thing i think - he has gambling debts, at one point his boss gives him a line of credit to play until dawn, etc. Think it would be okay?

35559 I hate when Amazon doesn't have a link to the book, because I don't like google books, but it is better than nothing.

I have heard that authors do it so that we are sympathetic to the characters. I don't know if it is really true.

It certainly doesn't work with me. I find them weak, unsympathetic and thoroughly unlikable. I've been reading so much misery lately that I just read a fluffy and poorly written romance just because the MC was happy, self-confident and not stupid. :D The story was blah and I'm fairly sure the author had only a rudimentary grasp of English, but I enjoyed it anyway.

I keep looking at that Kindle Unlimited thing but I really like real books made of paper and hate reading on a screen. So far I've managed to talk myself out of it. :D
