From the book blurb:
"But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witne..."
Oh, that's a good point!

Chapters 13-17
15. Do you think the head of security has something to do with the missing mascara? If not, do you have any gut feelings about who may have?
16. Given what he told Nilsson about Lo's past I'm surprised that she has once again confided in Ben, this time about what she think she saw from the balcony of cabin 10. I don't trust him at this stage, do you think Ben is trustworthy?
17. Flash forwards of news reports have confirmed that Lo definitely goes missing from the cruise ship. Have you found knowing this has increased or lessened the tension of the current storyline?
18. When Lo found that writing on the shower it confirmed that something has definitely happened to the girl in cabin 10. It seems like a scary situation for her to be in, especially not knowing who to trust. What do you think you would do if you were in Lo's position?
19. Future newspaper reports indicate a body has been found and it seems pretty obvious to me that it would be that of the girl. Do you think the author is trying to suggest to the reader that it is Lo? If so do you think she has succeeded in sowing enough of a seed to get the reader to consider it might be her?

8. Lo wonders about Rowan's experience of going to luxury places to report about them. She wonders "How can she stand it, these regular glimpses into a life no regular person would ever be able to afford?". Do you agree with this? Would you like to travel to luxury places for your work?
I would totally love it, I've travelled to nice places a lot for my work and I certainly have never found it frustrating. I've actually worked on a luxury cruise line for 3 years and it didn't bother me, seeing how the other half lived as I got paid to visit all these fabulous countries.
9. Tina is looking at Lo in a speculatively way, while they are waiting before they can go to the dinner room. Why do you think she looks at Lo that way? Did she overhear Lo talking about her?
I'm not sure on this one but I'm sure we will find out.
10. Jo is panicked and is thinking of Judah, then she says “I imagined burying my face in Judah’s shoulder and for a second I nearly burst into tears, but I clenched my teeth and swallowed them back down. Judah was not the answer to all". Why do you think she says this? Does she really have second thought about breaking up with Judah?
I think she realises that Its not necessarily healthy to have to rely on someone else every time she feels bad and that she needs to so,dire on herself since he isn't there to comfort her.
11. When Ben and Lo are alone, she tells him all about the burglary. Why do you think she can tell Ben and not Judha all details and how it made her feel? What does this say about Lo's feelings towards Ben and Judah?
Maybe it was too raw at the time she was talking to Judah, whereas with distance it's easier to talk about it. Maybe she isn't concerned what Ben thinks of her but she is concerned about Judah thinking badly of her.
12. Why do you think Judah is so worried about Jo? He asks all her friends if they heard from her. Do you think he is overreacting? I'm surprised he was worried so early on to her being missing since she was supposed to be working at the time, but I'm guessing it must be out of character for her for him to be worried.
13. Lo hears a scream and thinks she sees a woman in the sea. Do you think she imagined it? After all, she is a bit drunk and is possibly suffering from anxiety and PTSD. How do you think the staff handles the situation? Should they have done anything else?
I think it was handled terribly by staff. This is the one thing that annoys the hell out of me about the story so far. I cannot imagine there would ever be a situation on a cruise ship where a passenger reports a possible man overboard and the Captain wouldn't be informed immediately. The security guy doesn't know straight away what she's seen and if there was even the slightest possibility someone went over, the Captain would need to know about it in order to stop the ship if required. It gets more and more unlikely a man overboard will be found the longer it takes the ship to turn around, so there is no way protocol would be an investigation and determination by security of the validity of the report before telling the Captain. It's life and death call only the Captain would make. Unless of course the security guy is in on the murder and is trying to cover it up.
14. I think it is strange the schedule of the order of the ports is changed. Do you believe the reason they give to Lo? Oops, I'm listening to the audio and can't remember the reason they give.

Chapters 1 -6
1. Have you read anything by Ruth Ware before? Why did you decide to join this read? This is my first book by this author and so far I like it.
2. I have the impression that Lo suffered panic attacks and slight claustrophobia even before the break-in. Do you think there's much more to her past than we've been told so far?
Yes, I think Lo is definitely being made out to be a somewhat unreliable narrator, what with references to PTSD from the burglary and references to her drinking.
3. Theories on the break-in? Does a burglar wear latex gloves and lock the occupant of the house in their bedroom while ransacking the place? How would he know she didn't have a phone in her room? Seems there's more going on here than a simple burglary
Yes, certainly something going on there. Also the fact that the burglar obviously didn't want to seriously hurt her, locking her in her room instead, seems unusual.
4. I can't quite imagine the boat. She said it isn't much bigger than a yacht and yet the descriptions make it sound quite large. Your thoughts? yeah, it would have to be a big yacht with the number of cabins and rooms it has in it. Sounds very opulent though and a lovely way to experience the Aurora Boealis!
5. Ok stupid question, but would you borrow mascara from someone?! (What a way to get an eye infection!) And also on this very expensive ship full of rich people the lady gives her Maybelline mascara which is a realtively cheap brand. A clue she doesn't belong there perhaps?
I can't imagine knocking a random stranger's door and asking to borrow mascara, that's just weird. Good point about the mascara brand though, that didn't occur to me at all.
6. Have you ever been so overly tired but not able to sleep? Do you think Lo is paranoid due to her lack of sleep and anxiety or is there someone watching her?
I think I would have a hard time sleeping after what she went through, I imagine her mind just can't switch off. I've definitely been really tired but unable to sleep, it so frustrating!
Do you like the writing style? Is it an effective way to build suspense by using the emails to give us a glimpse in the future before going back to present day?
I am enjoying the writing style, it works for the genre well. It the emails are a great teaser for finding out what happens in the future and an interesting way to present a second timeline.

I think seeing tanks in your neighbourhood would be terrifying. I certainly cannot imagine it here in Australia. But you never know what the future holds.
14. What do you think of DeVante now that you know he was hiding the truth from the Carters? What do you think of his reasons for doing so?
15. What did you think of Starr’s dad’s and DeVante’s reaction to her revelation that Chris was her boyfriend? Do you think they are justified in their negative response?
I think prejudice goes both ways, and the response to the 'other' goes both ways. I'm sure that Mav and Uncle Carlos have a preconceived idea on what Chris is all about and his intentions with Starr, based on him being white. What is good, is that however begrudgingly, they do accept that he is in Starr's life and hopefully they will get to see what he is really like.
16. There was an explosive argument between Starr and Hailey. Do you think Hailey is truly racist, or just says racist things? What do you think of Starr and Maya’s moment of bonding over minority status?
This is a difficult one, I think Hayley has grown up with racial stereotypes and is ignorant enough not to think that voicing those stereotypes would be offensive. When confronted by her friends about displaying racist attitudes, she feels like it is an attack on her because she doesn't see herself as racist, so she sees them as the bad guys. However, I do think there is probably different levels or racism. Can we compare Hayley's stupid stereotyping and offensive comments the same as someone who was a member of White Pride for instance. However, in saying that her racism is much more insidious and probably quite common to the human condition and is probably the type of racism that is most often encountered by minority groups and would have the most detrimental affect because it encountered so frequently. It seems to me that Hayley doesn't like being challenged, so the fact that the girls have started to do so is probably quite shocking to her ideas about herself as well.
17. If you were in Uncle Carlos’s shoes, would you have punched One-Fifteen? It may cost him a job he loves, but he doesn’t seem to regret it.
I don't think him doing that would help the situation at all. It might have made him feel better, but I don't think it was the smartest move on his part.

9. As Starr and her family huddle around the TV after hearing gun shots the night of Khalil's funeral, they watch news. The news anchor speaks of "multiple reports that a gun was found in the car" and the fact that "there was also suspicion that the victim was a drug dealer as well as a gang member". This comes after the police chief gave a statement stating that they saw no reason to arrest the officer who shot Khalil.
What do you think they are trying to do with that information? Do you think it's valid? What about the protestors? Do they have right to be upset about the situation? Does their means of protest get their point across?
I think that this stage the only statement they would have got was from the police officer, so that was all they could go with at that stage.
I think protest is fine, as long as it doesn't devolve into violence, then the point of your protest gets lost.
10. Starr has been giving her boyfriend Chris the silent treatment for a while now and when he confronts her about it, she tells him that he wouldn't understand. Her rationale for that is because he's white. What was your reaction to that statement? Do you agree or disagree with that? Can Chris understand where Starr is coming from?
I think she feels like her home life is so alien to her white friends and boyfriends, that there is no possible way they could understand where she is coming from. Their home lives have nothing in common with hers. I also think she is embarrassed about where she comes from, so feels vulnerable at the idea of letting anyone know about that side of her life. However, it sounds like Chris is a pretty decent guy, so it might be worth her while trying to explain to him so he can support her.
11. The protest at Starr's school "For Khalil" really upset Starr. She mentioned that her "Williamson rules go out the door and the Starr from Garden Heights shows up". Do you think we are going to start seeing more of "Starr from Garden Heights" while she's at school? Do you think the two personas were necessary?
I think we will definitely start seeing more of that side of her come out. It would be really difficult to keep a big part of yourself hidden under such a stressful situation.
12. At the end of chapter 11, Maverick, Starr's father, tells Starr, "if you're ready to talk baby, talk. I got your back." Do you think that Starr is going to talk? Do you think that she should talk? What do you think you would do in that situation?
I think she has to talk, otherwise her lack of action in support Khalil and his memory and getting out there what really happened, would eventually consume her.
