5. Starr returns to school for the first time since the shooting. We get to see the other side of her personality, the one she puts on for her prep school friends. How does the situation we are in impact the way we relate to others? Do people have several personas or are we for the most part our true selves in whatever circumstance?
I think very few people are constant with their personas, although not necessarily in a fake way. I think it's just a different version of a person to suit the audience. For instance, I behave differently at work than at home, it's the more professional side of me. However I get the feeling with Starr that she doesn't particularly like that version of herself, that she feels it's a betrayal of her home self because it's so different.
6. We are introduced to Starr's prep school friends. Hailey makes a comment related to "fried chicken" and Starr gets offended. Do you think Hailey meant the remark in an offensive way, was it intentional or not? Was Starr being hyper-sensitive? How do you think this will affect the relationship between the two girls in the rest of the book?
That's a hard one, I think it was a bit offensive full stop because it just sounded a bit mean, but I don't think it came from a racist place, But I suppose it would depend if Hailey new about the fried chicken stereo type if it was racist.
7. Throughout this section you feel the underlying guilt Starr is experiencing regarding the relationship between her and Khalil, or lack thereof. Do you think this was a conscious decision on her part, because she wanted to distance herself from life in Garden Heights or was it inevitable, a natural progression as they got older? seems like a natural progression to me. Sometimes it's hard to maintain friendships in one place when so much of your life occurs somewhere else.
I think she was respectful but distrustful, which I totally understand. I think the police investigating the shooting should be from a different jurisdiction to be fair and unbiased. Those cops would have already had a preconceived idea about Khalil, because of his dealing etc. I think she's a decent girl, caught in an awful situation, where fear and guilt are dulling inside her and influencing her actions.

Lately I haven't watched much TV, but if I do it's a series called "The 100"... Not sure if anyone's seen it but it's been an interesting first few episodes..."
K, is that the Sci fi one about a 100 kids sent down to earth? It's on my want to watch list, but I hardly watch tv these days.
V, I don't think The Handmaids Tale is showing in Oz yet, but I really want to see it.

That sorta reminds me of my sister when she was a little girl. On the weekends she used to make herself a packed lunch in the morning so she could disappear into her room for a whole day of reading without interruptions.

Day 1 Questions, Chapters 1-4
1. Starr is considering whether to admit she was at the scene or not, due to fear of her own safety. What do you think you would do in that situation.
2. Do you think Uncle Carlos is right when he says that the police officer may have felt threatened because he knew Khalil was a drug dealer?
3. Starr is reluctant to trust the police with her statement, and I think I would feel the same in her situation. Do you think that Starr should trust the police?
4. What are your thoughts on Mav's insistence on staying in the neighbourhood despite the fact that Starr has lost two friends in her short life to both a gang shooting and a police shooting? Do you think that life would be safer for Starr if she moved away?

I think Joe is essentially a coward and poisoning was a safe way for him to kill Benji, with no risk to himself. I can't see there was much choice for Joe but to kill him, as releasing him would only result in police charges. I don't think his body will be found, I think Joe did a pretty good job in getting rid of it and no one has found the other two he has obviously killed.
11. Joe is convinced Peach is in love with Beck. Do you think Peach is in love with Beck?
On this I agree with him. I also think that Beck knows it and plays to it and may even reciprocate it deep down as she seems pretty keen to placate Peach at every turn.
12. Peach has some bad habits when she runs that Joe was able to take advantage of. Since he wasn’t successful in killing her, do you think he will try again? Joe seems to lack a lot of social skills. He was using the website to inform him of what type of balloons were for Get Well Soon. What do you think of the balloon? Did Beck overreact with him?
I don't think the balloon was a big deal and seemed an over reaction. I do think he may try again if Peach continues to be an impediment to his relationship with Beck.
13. Beck’s father is not dead. Why do you think she lied to Joe about her father? Do you think she will tell Joe the truth about her father and seeing him?
I already know the answer to this, so won't comment.
14. Joe is in a really bad place. Beck keeps calling since she got off the boat and he is afraid that she saw him there. After he gets back to his place, there is a knock on the door? Who do you think it is? What do you think he will do?
I already know this answer too.
