I have 2 "K" books ready to read. The quickest one will be A Kind Of Magic. 224 pages. I can probably finish it before bed. :)

Lord Emsworth and Others, which is finished on Maximus, has Stanley Ukridge, the MC in half of the stories. "Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter S".

I probably would have let lit linger quite a while before I finished it. But knowing it was going toward a goal did motivate me. :)

I've finished The God of the Hive for goal #2. First published April 27, 2010.

In Lisa Kleypas' Hathaway books one of the sisters has a pet hedgehog. I can always reread one of those if we don't come up with something else. They're quick and easy.

ETA - Would dragons work? At lot of the Anne McCaffrey books have characters with fire dragons as pets.
