35559 My other big prowler story isn't as exciting. Ages ago (twenty five years?) I was reading in bed one night when I heard someone moving around outside. I froze and listened, and I could hear them moving around in the bushes going from window to window. I poked my SO and he woke up and heard it too but showed no signs of grabbing a baseball bat and investigating. Instead we whispered about whether to call 911 - -this was so long ago we didn't have cell phones and the phone was not in its cradle because we were both irresponsible kids and terrible housekeepers.

Finally I creep into the living room because I think the phone is there and in a fit of bravery I peek out a window and see ... three deer eating the flowers in the flower bed next to the house. Good thing we didn't find the phone :-)

I think I finished my book before I managed to get to sleep that night.

35559 Shelia, I would be freaked out too, especially if they started with pounding on the door and then tried the doorbell. I'd figure sober people would start with the doorbell. If someone came to my door at 2 AM I'd usually figure they were lost or in trouble, but starting with loud pounding would be scary -- either they were running from something or they were on something.

About ten years ago we had a super strange situation where some guys in a house a few blocks away had kidnapped a girl and she got away and was frantically looking for help. She ran past my door but I didn't have a light on so she went to a neighbors. The cops came and found a ton of guns in the guys' house. I found out the next morning when I came back from driving my kids to school and there were SWAT vans all over the place. I'm still not sure if they didn't show up until 8:30 or if I was just so focussed on getting kids out on time that I drove past it all on my way out.

My neighborhood is pretty sleepy -- a few firecrackers on 4th of July is usually the most we get up too, so it was a big scary deal. I'm glad your visit turned out safe, although I still wonder about how sharp your cop was. Didn't he notice the lack of disturbance from your house as he came up the walkway? Did he think you were pounding your e-reader too hard as you turned the pages? Gah.

35559 It would be cool if it were all sci-fi though. We'd sure show that Milon!

If we can get the rest SF by the time Plethora and I finish our books, that would be nifty. But if we can't let's not wait so just use anything.

Back to reading now that I'm the hold up...

35559 Is this the Temeraire series (which has over ten books in it now)? I like it, but I think it repeats itself a lot. The last one is out now, and I'll get around to reading it in a few months probably.

35559 I'm not touching a thing. Well, I'll add books to rows but now I'll wait for the competent people.

35559 ACK. Don't ever let me near the spreadsheet again -- I think I tried to insert some rows for the new SPANDEX and messed up the stuff below it. Sorry... I'm trying to reverse out but I may have messed that up too...

35559 Ohh, I love science fiction! We can do this. I'm currently reading
Star Nomad and Castaway Planet by Eric Flint. I could easily finish these by Saturday.

Anybody else got SF books for this round? Should we make another round in the database for SF books? If you give me until Monday I could probably do all 5 myself.

I know we said we'd go for another word, but let's get this extra challenge in first!

35559 Add me to the Burn for Me fans -- I even gave it to my sixteen year old son. The cover made him a bit dubious, but then he really liked it.

I just finished The Thirteenth Unicorn which I put in the banked section, and now I'll go find something else to read while I wait for my final flight home!

35559 I got a chance to read the rules!

It looks like we got a pretty good word with a nice easy color bonus. The rules say for respinning:

Q. Is there a limit to how many times you can spell a word? Like, if we get a REALLY good spin, can we do it for the entire 4 weeks
A. No limit. You can re-do the same word as many times as you like.

The benefit for spinning a new word is:

a) You really don't like the word you were given and/or
b) You want to try and respin to get the word that is the team name in your group and get that 100 point bonus

I don't know how rare those big bonuses are, though.

35559 I'm back in America! Although I'm off to visit my best friends and show off my kids, so I'm not quite back in reading trim. What should I read first? I've almost finished Only EnchantingOnly Enchanting by Mary Balogh, which is a Survivor's Club book so I could start the next Spandex.

I know sometimes there are rules about all team players reading in something, so if there is something I should do first let me know. Again, I won't be reading much before Thursday, but I could knock out a book or two, and I have access to my online city library. I've only skimmed the rules, so I'll have to look again tonight when I get out of airports.
