3218 You're welcome (for the post).
3218 I'm not certain, Nick, but I think "The Fire of Faith" is the sequel to that. I'll have to check that out from the library one of these days...

Fire of Faith The Memoirs of John H. Groberg by John H. Groberg
3218 President Kimball was the prophet from the time I can remember (I was about 3 1/2 when President Lee died, and Joseph Fielding Smith was the prophet when I was born) until I was 15. He was a great one (as they all are, of course)!

3218 I haven't read that one, but it's on my list. I met Elder Oaks in May; he was looking for an alarm clock at the Walmart where I work, so I showed them where they were and shook his hand on the way there. (It was insignificant to him, I'm sure, but it was pretty neat for me!)

3218 Nice one, Lawrence!
3218 Greg is precisely right. I read "In the Eye of the Storm" and some of the movies' angles were emphasized to make it less of a "Mormon movie" for a wider audience. Still, I loved the movie, but as Greg said, the book goes much deeper into the spiritual aspects of Elder Groberg's mission. (Each chapter in the book has a theme, so there is a moral to every story that he tells.)

Full disclosure - I went to junior high and high school with Elder Groberg's daughter.

3218 I just read this thread for the first time, and I'm interested to know everyone's reactions now. At the time of the previous comments, President Monson was our "new" prophet. I'm interested to hear about everyone's feelings now that he has led the church for nearly 5 years.

You can also comment on the recent General Conference, particularly since the Ensign should be coming soon (and the conference is available for download online in audio, video, and text).

I've often thought it must be a bit of a bittersweet and lonely experience to be a new president of the church, because you have outlived all of your colleagues that were there when you were newly called to the Twelve (keeping in mind that the goal for the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is always unity of purpose). President Monson had served not only as President Hinckley's counselor during the 12+ years that he was the prophet, but they served together as counselors to President Hunter (for about a year) and President Benson from the time that President Monson was called to be a counselor in the First Presidency in 1985. It is also important to remember that with President Benson's poor health that he and President Hinckley had to shoulder a larger burden than counselors sometimes have to, so they certainly had a strong relationship with each other for a long time.

3218 There still isn't a whole lot of activity in our group. Does somebody have a suggestion for how to change that?
3218 That sounds cool, Cindy. I've always liked Parley (mainly, I think, because we had a pet that we named Parley P. Cat!) and his story as portrayed in the church film "How Rare a Possession" from the late 1980s. I've never read his autobiography, but it's on my list.

3218 Amen, Peg! I didn't begin reading "The Work and the Glory" series until the first 8 books were released, so by the time I got to the ninth, I didn't have to wait for it. (I did that with Harry Potter, too, on a non-LDS literature note.)

I recently finished Richard Paul Evans' "Michael Vey #2: Rise of the Elgen" and now have to wait at least a year for the next book (but whenever you read them, that is a very good series, written on about a fourth grade reading level, so you can breeze right through them).

3218 I started "Faith Rewarded" (which is from President Monson's journals from his experiences with the East German saints). It's wonderful, but I have other books that have a shorter deadline.
3218 I haven't read either the Vision Tokens book or any of the A Banner is Unfurled series.

Jennie, feel free to post a link here when you publish your review!
3218 All of those sound like great titles, Janell. Here are the book covers, for those interested...

Mee Speaks But Does She Have Anything to Say? by Mary Ellen Edmunds , You Can Never Get Enough of What You Don't Need The Quest for Contentment by Mary Ellen Edmunds , and Personal Glimpses of the Prophet Joseph Smith by Hyrum L. Andrus

3218 I haven't read it yet, but I'm interested in that, too. The thought of going to East Germany (as it was then called) was a factor in my decision to serve a mission.

To the Rescue The Biography of Thomas S. Monson by Heidi S. Swinton

President Monson wrote his own book on the subject of the East German saints called "Faith Rewarded" that is on my list, but I haven't read it yet, either.

Faith Rewarded A Personal Account Of Prophetic Promises To The East German Saints by Thomas S. Monson
3218 Thanks, David. I'll add "The Scholar of Moab" The Scholar of Moab by Steven L. Peck to my list.
3218 The Jaguar Prophecies by Phyllis Gunderson The Jaguar Prophecies
65 Signs of the Times Leading up to the Second Coming by David J. Ridges 65 Signs of the Times

Ridges' book is on my list of things to read (which is quite long.

As for Frank Richardson, ask him if there will be a sequel to "Sudden Peril." I'd like him to finish the story...

3218 Sounds like a good book. I don't know much about Sister Okazaki, but I think I heard her speak in General Conference a time or two...
Stars Reflections on Christmas by Chieko Okazaki
3218 I neglected to mention - I will also have separate threads for LDS Fiction and LDS Non-Fiction books that you have read in the more distant past or have not read yet but intend to; this is more for what you are currently reading (or recently read or soon-to-read).

3218 There were never any rules that I saw with the group as it has been previously, but I think it is important to have one, and it is this:

Official positions and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are regarded as revealed and inspired to the leadership of the Church by Divine Means. Posts that conflict with these may be deleted (particularly when critical of Church leaders/General Authorities), and 3 strikes may lead to being barred from posting on the group site.

What do I mean? I don't mean that it is not appropriate to ponder whether evolution may be part of the creation or that the Book of Mormon took place in the midwestern United States and Canada (as opposed to Central and South America). What this rules means is that a person should not be critical of the Church's stand on gay marriage, for instance.

I hope we can agree, but please feel free to comment and suggest amendments to this rule, as this is your group; I am simply the moderator. I just think it is important to establish a protocol in case someone defames our leaders.
