31308 Sounds fine to me. We can just take the month of May off for Swap/Pick and put on our thinking caps for something new for June.

31308 Hey girls, just catching up here...

Do you think we should make the Swap US only? Or just drop it all together? I agree we need to rethink the swap... I will work on coming up with some ideas too and we will figure out something awesome :)

31308 This was emailed to me today at work :)

All arrivals in heaven have to go through a bureaucratic examination to determine whether admission will be granted.

One room has a clerk who inputs computerized records of what each applicant did on his or her last day of life.

The first applicant of the day explains that his last day was not a good one. "I came home early and found my wife lying naked in bed. She claimed she had just gotten out of the shower. Well, her hair was dry and I checked the shower and it was completely dry too. I knew she was into some hanky-panky and I began to look for her lover. I went onto the balcony of our 9th floor apartment and found the SOB clinging to the rail by his finger tips. I was so angry that I began bashing his fingers with a flower pot. He let go and fell, but his fall was broken by some awnings and bushes. On seeing he was still alive I found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the balcony and throw it over. It hit the man and killed him.

At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and died.? The clerk thanked him and sent him on to the next office.

The second applicant said that his last day was his worst. "I was on the roof of an apartment building working on the AC equipment. I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building. I managed to grab onto the balcony rail of a 9th floor apartment but some idiot came rushing out on the balcony and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell but hit some awnings and bushes and survived, but as I looked up I saw a huge chest falling toward me. I tried to crawl out of the way but failed and was hit and killed by the chest." The clerk couldn't help but chuckle as he directs the man to the next room.

He is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters. He apologizes and says "I doubt that your last day was as interesting as the fellows in here just before you."

"I don't know" replies the man, "picture this, I'm buck naked hiding' in this cedar chest....."

31308 Welcome Alena! I haven't read that series, so maybe you have to be the one to read them and tell us is they are terrible :)
Apr 04, 2011 06:29PM

31308 No it doesn't have to be a romance, you can pick something else if you like :) That books looks interesting, I would love to hear your thoughts on it!
Apr 03, 2011 06:44PM

31308 I added it! And I added it to my google reader as well :)

31308 Hey, I just thought of this... are you girls still doing your BR blog??? If so we should add the URL to the 'affiliated website' in the group settings.
Apr 03, 2011 02:58PM

31308 FYI girls, I updated the group guidelines to include a little something about self promotion.

So going forward if we see a self promotion thread started anywhere in the group we can just leave a comment in the thread saying "thanks for letting us know, FYI this is being moved" or whatever and move it to the promotion folder (click on the little edit link next to the thread and chose the correct folder in the drop down).

If someone leaves a comment in any of the group discussion threads let's just delete but also send the person a short PM saying "your comment has been deleted, feel free to start a thread in the promotion folder, thank you for understanding... bla bla bla" ... you know, kill them with kindness. :)

What do you two think? Sound good?
31308 Thanks for letting us know about your book Kelli! :) FYI- I am going to move this over to our new 'promotion' folder.
What's this? (17 new)

31308 I think you will enjoy The Sheik Karla! It's a fun one!

Well haven't gotten to far into Bitter Passion, Sweet Love yet so I will comment on that one for the group read.... I might try to squeeze in Harem as well, the cover is just so purdy, but that might not get done in April. We shall see :)

31308 Thought we would add a longer challenge just for fun. Let me know what you think. If the group likes this we can add some more yearly challenges as well.

Challenge Duration: One year from your chosen start date.

Rules: The challenge is pretty basic but it will probably be pretty challenging! Read one book that takes place on each of the seven continents: Europe, North American,(and here is where is starts to get hard for romances) South America, Asia, Australia (and then really, really hard) Africa and Antarctica.

They don't all have to be BR's or romances, you can read any books from any genre. But you get extra bonus points if you stick with BR's for sure! We will all be super impressed! :)

The book can take place in full on that continent or just part of the book can take place there, but each book can only count for one continent. So you should have read 7 different books for this challenge.

To Participate: Just post here that you are interesting in participating. You then have one year from the date of that post to read your chosen 7 books. As you complete each book repost your list with the date each book was read.

Good luck everyone!
Apr 02, 2011 10:54AM

31308 Challenge Duration: April 1st through June 30th

Rules: The challenge it to read at least one complete series beginning to end. It can be as short as a trilogy (just one book per month) or as long as you like (a minimum of a trilogy though, not just a squeal).

You are welcome to choose any series you like from any genre, BR, romance or otherwise.

To Participate: Just post here what series you have chosen to read. Instead of editing the original posts let's go ahead and repost with updates. So as you complete books in your series repost your list here with the date each book was read next to it.

Good Luck Everyone!

31308 This months read by genre: The Harem Romance Novel!

Definition: According to Wikipedia a Harem refers to the sphere of women in what is usually a polygamous household and their enclosed quarters which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and came to the Western world via the Ottoman Empire.

A common harem bodice ripper plot line might include the heroine being kidnapped and brought to a harem where due to her looks or cunning works her way up the chain to become a 'favorite' of the master of the household.

The first romance with this plot line (as far as I understand) was The Sheik by E.M. Hull written in 1918, the setting captured the imaginations of women everywhere and has ever since been a staple in the romance genre. If you are interested The Sheik is available in the public domain for free as an e-book from Amazon and other e-book retailers. It's a real hoot and worth the read! Check out my very short review here

This setting is a real favorite among many of our members here so it's probably overdue that we did this as a group read!

To Participate: Just pick any romance novel that takes place in a harem to read for the month of April. It can be the main setting for only part of the book or the whole thing. Post in this thread what book you have chosen to read and then come back when you are done and let us know what you thought.

If you need some suggestions check out the harem shelf on our group bookshelf or this list here on GoodReads.

Discussion Questions: How did the setting of the harem impact how the characters interact with each other? How did the heroine deal with her situation? Did the setting of the harem add to the story or was is more of a wallpaper backdrop (the story could have happened anywhere)? Why do you think this setting has become so popular for romance readers? Did you enjoy the setting? Would you seek out a book set in a harem to read again in the future?
