24794 Poor Goriot. People are ganging up on him already and the story is barely started. Fave quote for today: "One of the most odious habits of such Lilliputian minds is to assume that others are as petty as they are."

Why would you say that?

24794 My translation says:
"This room gives off a smell for which our language has no special word: it can only be described as a boardinghouse smell. It smells stuffy, mouldy, rancid: it is chilly, clammy to breathe, permeates one's clothing: it leaves the stale taste of a room where people have been eating: it stinks of backstairs, scullery, workhouse."
Quite a bit different! This is going to be fun reading this with someone who can read it in French and give much better translations!
Mrs. Vanquer sounds like one of the ladies that would sit at the bottom of the guillotine and knit while the blade did its dirty deed. Balzac seems to be able to describe scenes with wonderful clairity, but with few words. By now Dickens would probably be into the fourth chapter! Ha!

24794 I have really enjoyed the set up for this book. The descriptions of the dining room, kitchen, well, the entire block for that matter has been wonderful! I can almost smell the "boarding house" smell. I wonder if it smells vaguely like a nursing home?

24794 Kerri and I were wondering if we could move the date to January 1st or 2nd instead of Dec? That would move the read time for the books to the end of Dec also. Would that be ok? Somehow the Holiday times just seem to get crazy for everyone so we thought this might help everyone out. Please let us know!

24794 I finished the story last night and really enjoyed it. I could not get the picture of Scout dressed up like a ham out of my head. Too funny! What a poignant book. I will gladly eat my crow and humble pie and admit that this book was a great book.

24794 Alright, I finally have the book from the library in my hands, so I can finally start reading it. I think that my mom is going to start it with us also, if we can figure out how to get it downloaded onto her Kobo. It is there, but not there if you can understand that!
I'm excited to find that this might be a true story, how fun is that?

24794 That is interesting. Dill as Truman Capote? Huh..
I'm almost to the end and I almost cried when Atticus and Scout discovered all of the food that people had brought to the house after the trial. What a touching moment and also so very truthful. People generally are very caring and appreciative of good works. They will give what they can. Very touching!

24794 Probably the periodicals that noone seems to check out anymore due to the Internet! It had to take quite awhile to do that though!

24794 Now that you have the shelves and the stairs, how about a little Holiday decorating?

I haven't heard of anyone else, but I could be wrong.

24794 Brrr, the north Atlantic in September-Brrr! I bet that woke them up!

24794 While I was reading the part about Calpurnia and how she took the children to her church on Sunday, I was struck by memories of The Help. I read this last year and starting comparing the two books in my head. Has anyone else read the two books?
I also don't get Dill. Where does he really live?
I liked Scout's spunk during the showdown at the jail and how she diffuses the situation. I enjoy the Aunt although she would drive me crazy to live with! Her classifications of everyone in town is very humorous.
I noticed that the book was published in 1960 right around the time that the Civil Rights Era was beginning and I was wondering if Harper Lee was involved with the CR movement later on? Does anyone know?

24794 That's ok! Did you enjoy your trip? Sounds rather relaxing being disconnected! I found a copy on line, so I will try to start this weekend! Still trying to finish To Kill a Mockingbird.

I don't won't to make it sound like it is terrible, but it was a letdown. It had lots of stuff in it that I skipped over which bogged down the story and I was puzzled with the ending which seemed rather rushed to me. Oh dear, I'm not helping with this am I?
