22225 My count was 18, now it's 24. YEsterday, I grabbed a bunch of used books by the Pulitzer Prize winning author John Updike. Can you believe that these books had not been checked out in the last eight years? I couldn't just let them go in the trash.

Rabbit Is Rich
Rabbit at Rest
Bech A Book
Bech Is Back
Afterlife
Memories of the Ford Administration

We're currently going through weeding our library's adult fiction collection of books that haven't been checked out in the last five years and we're finding an unbelieveable number that fall into that category. That's both good and bad, it gives us more space on our shelves but it's sad to see so many getting pulled. On the other hand, that means I have more to fill up my home shelves and also empty my wallet. Oh well, I like to think of it as giving good homes to endangered species. :-)

22225 I don't know if this is good or bad, but my coworkers at the library have learned what a good source of income I can be for the library by letting me know right away if any books are being withdrawn because then I get first dibs on buying the used books. This has resulted in me grabbing another five yesterday.
Rob Roy
Ivanhoe
The Werewolves of London
Shadows on the Hudson
Shosha A Novel

That makes 18 now. I was planning on buying two more bookcases next month, but I don't know if just two are going to be enough. Yikes!

22225 That's awesome Joseph! So much for your book buying limit for this month ;) Didn't I say you'd end up with about 29 for this month ;) :P
..."

You just might be right, I just grabbed two more from the used book shelf at the library yesterday. That brings me up to 13 new so far. I don't know if even I could pull off another 16 in the next two weeks, though. On second thought though... lol

22225 Two more added to my collection yesterday, from the used book shelf at the library. That brings me up to 13 for the month, so far.
Herman Melville Typee, Omoo, Mardi
Herman Melville Redburn, White-Jacket, Moby-Dick

22225 I just learned something interesting the other night. I knew that Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to the Library of Congress after the British burned the capitol and the collection in the War of 1812, but did you know the number of books he sold was 6,487?

For me to match that number, my personal library is going to have to grow ONLY 2,766 from its current 3,721. ;-) Any of you closer than that to matching Mr. Jefferson's collection? :-)

Proclaiming that "I cannot live without books," Jefferson began a second collection of several thousand books, which was sold at auction in 1829 to help satisfy his creditors. For more info go to http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/jefferson...

22225 I must admit, Book Depository is an enabler. I've been hemming and hawing whether to buy Frostbitten in hardcover or to wait for it to come out in paperback. Amazon was offering it for 34% off and today I saw they now have it dropped down to 46% off, but Book Depository is selling it for 50% off! Plus that free shipping, I finally broked down and order it. I'm just too impatient to read it to wait for it come out cheaper in paperback. But half off even a hardcover is pretty darn good, right?

22225 $6.50 is way to much to pay for any 'very used' book unless its something rare or hard to find, especially a paperback. ..."

I agree. I don't like to spend more than $2 for a used hardcover or $1 for a used paperback unless it's a hard-to-find. If it's a hard-to-find, my usual limit to pay is half the cover price.

22225 I added another 4 from the used book shelf at my library to my current 11 new books I've bought so far. I love sea stories and sea info and just couldn't pass up on grabbing these when I saw them:
Pirates! Brigands, Buccaneers, and Privateers in Fact, Fiction, and Legend
Shipwrecks An Encyclopedia of the World's Worst Disasters at Sea
The Custom of the Sea
In the Heart of the Sea The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

22225 Awesome! Thank you so much for letting me know. This will help support my habit.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. lol. But your welcome anyway. :-)

Where is everyone getting these 40% off Border coupons? I'd ..."

Dorsi, if you aren't getting them through the email due to being a Borders Member, which you can be for free, just sign up in store or online, check out www.wow-coupons.com . It's a site that tends to have all sorts of great coupons that are provided here and there online from stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble.

Don't feel bad, I've done worse. Before and even since I started carrying around a list of all my books on my PDA I've bought duplicate copies of used books I already have. Even did it just yesterday. Oh well, at least that mispent extra money went to the public library.

22225 Lauren wrote: "I have still only bought one book yay for me. im staying on the wagon but it sure is a bumpy ride."

Tell me about it Lauren, cuz I just fell off the wagon. I just finished reading a fun new book
Urban Shaman by C.E. Murphy and decided I wanted to read the next in the series, so I checked the online catalog and found that my local library had both #2 and #3. I drove to the library and was able to check them both out, but I couldn't leave without walking past the Used Books For Sale displays. They sucked me! I ended up spending the last $11 I had in my wallet on:
L is for Lawless
Crocodile on the Sandbank
He Shall Thunder in the Sky
Murder In The Chateau
The White House Pantry Murder/an Eleanor Roosevelt Mystery
Cold Service

That makes 11 new books so far this month. I know I should feel bad about not just walking past the used books, but it just feels so good to add to my collection! Almost makes me feel giddy. lol

22225 I can't believe I did, but I actually returned a book to Borders the other day. I've NEVER returned a book before. On the other hand, the reason I returned it was because I found I could get it cheaper from the Book Depository, so I guess I didn't really return it. Oh well. Any of you ever actually return a book to the store and NOT get a replacement copy of it? What book and why?

22225 Linda wrote: "I interpreted this thread to mean: a book you bought and actually read shortly after buying, in other words it didn't just go on your shelf to-be-read at some time in the future..."

Thank you Linda, that is what I was aiming for. Good to know I wasn't completely unclear. :-)

22225 Ok, enough is enough. I bought two more books using Borders coupons but that is it for the rest of the year. I only have one more book on my shopping list and that one is ordered from Amazon, so no more succumbing to the siren call of the coupon. Tie me to the ship's mast my friends, please! :-)
Sep 06, 2009 09:17AM

22225 I did pretty good this weekend.
I used the 40% off coupon from Borders and my dad did too to get me Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul II Tales of Passion, Achievement and Devotion and Chicken Soup for the Baseball Fan's Soul Inspirational Stories of Baseball, Big-League Dreams and the Game of Life
My Amazon order of Guardians of Being arrived and so did my Book Depository order of Living with the Dead that I got for 50% off so I can return my previous purchase of it to Borders.

All I have left on my book shopping list for this month and the rest of the year is my Amazon order of The Lost Symbol so no more succumbing to Borders's coupons for me! I'm going to get on the wagon and stay on, no matter what! Right? :-)

22225 Ellen was sitting with Mikey Spuchins, their goofy but very good friend. Mikey had somehow managed to sneak his THINGAMADOO portable video game player onto the bus. Jo Jo looked to see what Mikey was playing.

Magic Pickle And The Creature From The Black Legume by Scott Morse
22225 Lauren wrote: "The only thing that keeps me away is if i don't go any where but work and home. must not deviate from the path..."

Lauren, unfortunately that won't work for me. Right between my trip from home to work is the Borders! lol

22225 Friends, lend me your strength, please! Borders is offering ANOTHER %40 off coupon! They're sucking me in! Somebody throw me a rope or I'm going to be going back AGAIN to by ANOTHER unplanned book from them, (probably Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul II Tales of Passion, Achievement and Devotion)! Help!
Just saying Hi! (101 new)
