208213 I started a Head Full of Ghosts and it's reading really quickly and I love it. I still wanna squeeze in Left Hand of Darkness but I have to wait a bit before I can focus on it.
208213 I started the book and I'm about 100 pages in!

I'm loving it.

I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about the blog posts.

My library increased the copy count of the book and my copy actually came in from the library lol! Add it to my pile of books to read... ugh. I am going to start something else first, but ideally I'll get to The Dry during the weekend sometime. :)
208213 I haven't started it yet -- I plan on starting this month's books around this weekend.
208213 I haven't started it yet -- but I will soon! I plan on starting this month's books around the next weekend.

208213 A new ONTD post happens to include a book rec!

"A few of Trevor Noah's favourite things"
Favourite book: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More by Roald Dahl. "I like the story because it's about a boy that learns something new and with it achieves more than he could ever dream of. Books weren't necessary a way of escapism for me, but a way to travel to places and times I couldn't visit myself."

208213 Famous author Stephen King has said that A Head Full of Ghosts "scared the living hell out of [him]." (Source: https://twitter.com/stephenking/statu...) and the book is included in this article: 11 Books That Scared the Master of Horror

SYNOPSIS: The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia.

To her parents' despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie's descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts' plight. With John, Marjorie's father, out of work for more than a year and the medical bills looming, the family agrees to be filmed, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the shocking incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend.

Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie's younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long ago events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories that clash with what was broadcast on television begin to surface--and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising vexing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.

208213 oh oh oh!!! I have head full of ghosts and was planning on starting it so let's do that together!!! I'll create the thread in a bit!!! :D
208213 I think I'm going to aim for 2-3 books this month for the challenge.

My idea list:

The Silence of the Lambs (won five Oscars in 1991)
Rosemary's Baby (Best Adapted Screenplay, 1969)
The Children of Men (nominated Best Adapted Screenplay, 2007)
Jaws (won Best Score, Editing... nominated for Best Picture, 1976)
The Exorcist because I haven't read it since high school (won Best Adapted Screenplay in 1974)
Misery (won Best Actress, 1991)

maybe I'll make a post of horror/sci-fi books-turned-movies that have nominated or won oscars, haha. i'm so lazy tho...

TRACKING THREAD FOR MYSELF UNDER THE SPOILER: (view spoiler)
208213 Actor Hugh Dancy recommended The Left Hand of Darkness in his top 10. Of the book he had this to say:

"Forced to pick a single sci-fi novel I’ll go with this because, in ways even beyond most sci-fi, it is so far ahead of its time. You’re left believing entirely in the worlds she’s imagined, including a better version of this one."

SYNOPSIS: A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can choose -and change - their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.

Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.

So excited to read this!

That's actually on my TBR shelf and I was about to say I will join you in reading that, but then I went to my library's website and there are 115 holds on only 15 copies of the book!!! lol. I put a hold on it but there's no freaking way I'll get to it anytime soon. siiiigh!!

If you're OK with paying for a book, maybe look up Freedom is a Constant Struggle at thriftbooks.com or you can try ordering it from the Strand in NYC. I got my copy from The Strand, so they should have it available online too. But thrift books would probably be a cheaper! (and free shipping if you spend over 10 bucks!)

I'll read that with you! I got it for xmas but I haven't started it yet. I'll create a thread for us in the folder when it gets closer to March :)

208213 What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People by Joe Navarro this one? Or What Every BODY is Saying: The definitive guide to decoding what their body language is really saying by Christine Cruz

looks like either of those books are looking to teach the reader how to decode nonverbal behavior so they should count, since the point of the month's challenge is to read something educational :)
