208213 oh YAY! I didn't even know it was a thread already!

Thanks for setting it up!

I'm going to start the book tomorrow.
208213 OK i finally picked up my copy of The Haunting of Hill House. I also got a copy of The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which the new Eli Roth movie starring Jack Black is based on.

I'll make a thread for Hill house! Never mind there is a thread already! let's do this!

Anyone else going to read The House book? it's a kids book and it's short.

208213 I finally finished my book, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman! LOL. I dont know why this month's task was hard for me to find a book?! I just kept putting off finding one! I ended up going with Seraphina, which Lea read too. I liked it a lot. I don't normally read fantasy, and never read a book about dragons before at all, so it was all new to me and I really liked it. It was cute and sweet. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a charming YA. And now I am officially done with every month's task from 2017! (...i think, anyway lol, maybe i should double check that :D)
208213 If other ppl are gonna read Haunting of Hill House too, I can start a thread! :)
208213 I put The Alienist on hold, but I won't get to it for forever!

So I also put on hold The Haunting of Hill House, and I'll be picking it up this weekend or early next week.

208213 I realized that I read a few award-winning books earlier in the year (The Fisherman, The Winter Box,If I Was Your Girl and The Ballad of Black Tom) but I'm not gonna count them lol. I put Every Heart a Doorway on hold at the library and I'll pick it up this week.

208213 Welcome to the 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge! We had a lot of fun in 2017 with the first ever ONTD Reading Challenge (though we know that for some, reading the posts here is already quite the challenge). Now, hjalmartazar and milfordacademy invite you to join the new and updated 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge: 12 books, 12 months, and ONTD-themed categories. Every month, we will make a post recommending books that fit each category.

The rules are simple:

⦁ Each month, read a book that corresponds to the category.
⦁ No page limit.
⦁ It can be a book that you’ve already read.
⦁ Novellas, graphic novels, and anthologies can count toward a category.
⦁ Ebooks and audiobooks count as books!
⦁ If you missed a month, you can go back and read a previous month’s task.
⦁ Keep us updated on how your reading challenge is going in our book posts!
⦁ If you have a Goodreads account, join our ONTD Reading Challenge Group!

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped us in coming up with this year’s tasks for the challenge!

JANUARY - A book that is being adapted into a movie or TV show in 2018

It's always fun to read a book before it is made into a movie or TV show - you'll get to complain about all the things the adaptation didn't get right in the ONTD posts about it. (The post with recs for January’s books is coming soon!)

FEBRUARY - “Come to Brazil!”

It’s February, which means Carnaval in Brazil. Millions of people (including celebs) from all over the world flock to Rio, Recife, Salvador, São Paulo and other iconic cities to celebrate. This month, we invite you to Come to Brazil by reading books by Brazilian authors or that are about or set in Brazil (fiction or non-fiction).

MARCH - “Ha impact!”

Read a book by a female author who is considered to be influential and has had a significant impact in literature, culture and/or society.

APRIL - “Sure, Jan”

This month, read a book with an unreliable narrator!

MAY - “Men are weak!”

The oft-quoted expression (at least here on ONTD) came from the fantasy film, The Lord of the Rings. For this month, read a woman-authored fantasy.

JUNE - “Who?”

This month, learn more about someone by reading a biography or a memoir!

JULY - “It’s been 84 years”

Read a book that was published in 1934 OR written by an author who was born in 1934!

AUGUST - “The gossip is priceless”

This month, read a book about fame, show business or Hollywood (anything from a tell-all to a fiction book about someone famous).

SEPTEMBER - “What is the truth?”

This month, borrow Latoya’s magnifying glass and ask like Oprah: what is the truth? It’s time to read a mystery!

OCTOBER - “The darkest timeline”

This month, a twist on the spooky October theme! Read a dystopian or (post)apocalyptic book!

NOVEMBER - TL;DR

Can’t face another big-ass book? Let’s take it easy: this month, read a novella or a book under 150 pages.

DECEMBER - A book that won an award in 2018

This month’s challenge is a fun way to keep up with the year’s releases and with what’s happening in the literary world. The task is to read a book that won an award this year - any award you want. You can go high-brow with the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize or the National Book Award, explore what’s best in speculative fiction with the Hugo and Nebula awards, get scared by the Shirley Jackson or Bram Stoker Awards, read women with the Women’s Prize for Fiction, fall in love with the Romance Writers of America (RITA Awards), etc!

208213 Lol im doing the same thing, I totally see her as Abby

208213 I'm on page 65 (hardcover version), so almost a quarter of the way through.

I'm also enjoying the book! It's fairly well-written. I like the main character and can relate to her on some levels. The mystery of what really happened to Kaycee is holding my interest.

208213 Oh I'm glad you commented here bc I almost forgot about this thread!
I have my copy and will start it probably tomorrow. I hope it's a fast read because my library copy is due back this week and I won't be able to renew it :(

208213 For anyone reading Bonfire, I made a thread. Just in case :)
Nov 10, 2017 11:36AM

208213 I think some of us will be reading Bonfire, so here is a discussion thread for it

SYNOPSIS

Should you ever go back?

It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands.

But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens’ biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good.

Abby knows the key to solving any case lies in the weak spots, the unanswered questions. But as Abby tries to find out what really happened to Kaycee, she unearths an even more disturbing secret—a ritual called “The Game,” which will threaten the reputations, and lives, of the community and risk exposing a darkness that may consume her.

With tantalizing twists, slow-burning suspense, and a remote, rural town of just five claustrophobic miles, Bonfire is a dark exploration of the question: can you ever outrun your past?

I would say a comedian can count as a celeb, esp since he was on a show

208213 'Salem's Lot - SO GOOD. Like i can't believe it took me this long to ever read it. Scary, and also beautifully written. I get why King has so many fans now. LOL

Pet Sematary - Another favorite from the month. Not as scary as Salem's Lot, but definitely tense and spooky at times.

Hemlock Grove - Fun but was left with questions.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vol. 1: The Crucible - i remember liking afterlife with archie but this was way better. totally into this dark sabrina. makes me excited for the upcoming CW show, which i hope is like this.

Ghost Road Blues - i personally liked that the human evils took center stage over the background paranormal evils. not super great writing, but held my interest. definitely want to read the rest of the series now.

Bone White - after Salem's Lot ,this was the next scariest. i wish i had read this in the winter time. kinda makes me not want to go to alaska, ever. a lot better than the other Malfi book I read (The Ascent). Plot was spooky, there was a lot of suspense, and the characters came off the page. highly recommend.

Vampire Mountain - my least favorite in the series so far. i still liked it, but definitely felt more like a filler episode.

Dark Harvest - actually started reading this in lat September and finished early oct. the narrative voice was unique and i dug that. reminded me of screenplay writing a little bit. cool story for the season, and fast read.
