There's ANOTHER House of X? Boy does Marvel love recycling titles xD I'm so out of loop with the X-books that I'd probably be confused by ..."
That was House of M, but close enough.

This volume while bringing up some new questions is more focused and easier to follow. Vaughan clearly has this thought out and we will get all our answers in due time. What I like about Vaughan is that he cleanly maps out his story arcs and when a story is done, the book ends no matter how popular it is. Most writers are afraid to slaughter that cash cow and will let a series drag out for as long as they can make some bucks off it, see Nick Spencer's Morning Glories for what happens when you milk a series for too long.

I just finished vol 5 over the weekend and the series hold up throughout. No matter how many odd ball elements Vaughan throws in, he answers enough questions that I've never concerned that he won't stick the landing.

That's strange. There's one of vol. 3. I checked it out from the library.

That's probably on sale because no one wants it now that the series is ending. You know they'll release a new version with the entire run at some point.

That's a great group of comics you've got there. Have you read Goldie Vance? It's along the same lines of Patsy Walker: Hellcat but replace superheroics with a teenage detective. Brittany Williams drew both books actually.
I'm currently working my way through Mind MGMT. Just finished vol. 4 over the weekend.
They just relaunched Vertigo last year. It makes little sense to shutter it so soon. But then again, why would a creator bring his creator owned book to Vertigo when there's Image, Black Crown, Dark Horse, Vault, Black Mask, etc. who all offer better creative control and money? If I was DC, I'd use Vertigo as an outlet for strange, adult stories using DC characters like they've done in the past with Sandman, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, etc.

No, but Cthu-Lou makes an appearance.

The first 3 have all been collected.
Sherlock Frankenstein
Doctor Star
Quantum Age

Ed wrote: "Oh, I have liked some versions of SuperMan and BatMan. I just don't have interest in following the whole history of each."That's the great thing about long running characters though. You don't have to know their entire history. There are plenty of fantastic standalone stories or runs.
Ed wrote: "I don't catch all the references in Black Hammer, but I do catch some. The story stands alone, at least so far. It is not my favorite series or anything. But I like it OK so far. (3 volumes)"
I take it you haven't read the many Black Hammer spinoffs. None of which are necessary but do flesh out the world some more.
Ed wrote: "Seriously, though, I just like other things. Maybe would be different if I'd started reading them earlier before all the million different backstories already existed. We'll see how long I can go with some new 'universes' like the Black Hammer books."

I'm in no way knocking Black Hammer because I really dig it. I'm just surprised you do if you don't like superhero books.
I'm fine with the amount of Batman content produced as long as it's high quality. It's the cash grabs that frustrate me.

I think the Harley Quinn series DC has released since the new 52 started would be OK for a 12 year old as long as you are OK with a lot of poop jokes. Until recently, it was written by the husband and wife team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner. The more recent issues by Sam Humphries would be fine too.

This was a seriously messed up book with these kids living in the shelter of a dead little girl's body. I wouldn't bill it as an anti-fairy tale, but more of an anti-Disney fairy tale. The original fairy tales were every bit as dark and brutal as this. I did enjoy the juxtaposition of the simple watercolors portraying some real atrocities. I loved the ending where Aurora finally gets fed up.

I liked how grounded this was in the rest of the DC universe, with Buddy meeting quite a few DC characters. I always remember these Vertigo titles unofficially distancing themselves from the rest of the DCU but that must have come later when they switched over to Vertigo.

I actually enjoyed the Invasion crossovers. For whatever reason, that was always one of my favorite DC events of that time period. I like the focus on Buddy's family, which continues to grow as the series goes on. The Mirror Master and Martian Manhunter appearances are a delight. Those Brian Bolland covers are exquisite.
