I felt much the same as Renata did when reading this. I definitely think the author took some liberties to make Lale appear more good natured and sympathetic. Honestly, I would have preferred a more complex character. In the same way I would have preferred more details. I did appreciate the look inside a camp, and the feelings of guilt these people were forced into by just trying to survive. Maybe reading this side by side with our Classic pick, Crime and Punishment, made this book a little less enjoyable. Both deal a lot with guilt and while Crime and Punishment goes into great detail and insight into what that guilt feels like The Tattooist of Auschwitz was so simple by comparison.
Honestly, I was dreading reading more Russian Literature, but this book was wonderful! Like others mentioned, I too got a little confused with the names at times. But that hardly matters when the story was so good! It was so intense, there were a few scenes that had my heart absolutely racing. Michael mentioned how unsettling it was that Raskolnikov is so relatable, and I felt the same way. It made the book so compelling to relate to these thoughts of guilt, and it was unsettling because murder is above and beyond anything I have felt guilty about. I've definitely found a new favorite!

April 1st - June 30thThe theme for the second quarter is the 5 oldest books on your TBR!
It is the theme that has been suggested the most this year, and if you have been in EHRTBM for a few years you probably remember when the TBR Challenge started out as a year long challenge with the only goal being to read the five oldest books on your TBR!
Don't worry, you have until midnight March 31st to finish last quarters theme!
Hi Laura,Members can set up threads for buddy reads. Before setting up a thread post to the Buddy Read Notice Board to make sure there are other members interested in reading the same book and to set up a good time to read it.
I second- Scythe
- The Midnight Library
- Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents
- Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
Hey Robin!we are ending the quarterly reads due to low participation. Buddy reads are a lot more active in this group and many of our buddy reads are the longer books.
I second A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents
